I've only been watching the Spurs for a few season now but damn, Duncan was a beast back in the day. Just plain beautiful basketball. You all were some lucky mofos to have witnessed timmy in his prime.

Tim Duncan is a special player and will remain so until the day he retires. There are still flashes of his ability here and there but 2000 - 2005 there was pure beast. Especially his 2003 finals run, wow.

Like OP I'm new to the Spurs too and never saw Duncan in his prime. I have a question for y'all though.

Everyone says about how fundamentally sound Duncan is, and it's not even a question. However I've always thought when I watch him in the post that he is somewhat of a power player more than a finesse player. I never saw Olajuwon or McHale, but from highlights it seems like the moves they had were more finesse and utilised more trickery and fakes, whereas Duncan gets the ball in good position and just attacks the rim.

Not sure how accurate this is, would like to hear other opinions.

You sort of have a point there. Tim was/is a combination of power and finesse, but his philosophy was always to use the least amount of energy possible to score. I believe he once said you should only make moves that are necessary. Many players use unnecessary motions to score, but Tim tries to eliminate those unnecessary motions and score in the most efficient way possible.

since Hakeem, only 2 bigmen you just throw the ball to on offense 100% of the time: prime Shaq and prime Duncan. Nobody else comes even close.

Mchale had a lot of "junk" in his post game...a lot of fakes and up and unders.

Tim's post game is more straight forward yet deadly effective

Tim has great footwork so in his prime he was more straight forward, back to basket or front ya and shoot or drive on the first step or spin. In recent years he's used his great footwork to juke and dance in the paint to create space and has a soft touch.
