New Weird America describes a subgenre of psychedelic and indie music, often psych folk, of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

NWA. Cube, Ren, and Eazy are three of the greatest MCs ever in the game. Too bad Ren got fat and his voice changed and delivery got lazy by the time he started doing solo albums (though the first, Kizzmyblackazz, was a pretty solid EP).

Their beats were TOO monotonous. Go back and listen. Its like boom, boom, boom, boooooooooooooooooooooooooom. (repeat 100x) and rap to it. :rolleyes

Gotta disagree on Wu-Tang, as Enter the 36 Chambers, Liquid Swords, Tical, and Return to the 36 Chambers were incredible albums. I do have to agree with PE over both though; their first four albums pretty much kill any other rapper's entire discography (well, other than Rakim and KRS).

Yeah, I can't think of any time NWA had any kind of complicated beat, and on Dre's solo shit he'd just sample a few seconds of Parliament and then loop it forever. Didn't matter much though since Cube, Eazy, Ren, and Snoop were such talented lyricists.

Wu-Tang.

But for me that has as much to do with how rap changed in general as it does with the individual talents of each group's members.

ice cube>>>>>>>>>wu tang as a group

NWA because i love 90's west coast hip hop. also, nwa are pioneers to gangsta rap, most controversial group of all time and have done more for hip hop than them dirty niggas from staten island. snoop, nate dogg, mack 10, btnh, eminem, 50 cent, etc etc all fall under the nwa family tree.

questlove said it best "hip hop has 2 halves, before nwa and after nwa" true story.

Can't go wrong with either....both great, maybe a tie.

I look at it like this: NWA were the pioneers of west coast rap. While the Wu were not on east coast hip-hop, many others paved the way for them. That's not their fault, but to me it breaks the tie.

Ice-T was the person who created west coast hardcore hip-hop, dropping 6 in the Morning back when Cube was biting the Beastie Boys' style in CIA and Dre was turning off the lights with the World Class Wreckin Cru. Ice was the trailblazer for that style (and also the best ever at it).

Dre gets dissed a lot for his Wreckin Cru shit (he even badmouths it himself), but it's not bad.

Glad there are plenty of rap fans here - both good groups.. dunno who I like more. Part of me agrees with Trill about NWA and first controversial rap group etc etc but wu tang cool too. I can understand if rap isn't your thing but people who say there are no skill in it and they rap about stupid things.. fucking hate that

What makes this close is NWA only had two great years together. 1987 there was Eazy Duz It (most underrated hip hop album ever), NWA & the Posse (which was great except for the wack Fila Fresh Crew garbage; thank god DOC left them), and then Straight Outta Compton in 88, and that was it for their prime.

I don't think they released anything in 89 when Cube told Jerry Heller to gfy, and 100 Miles in 90 was nice but but it was only like 4 songs and only 3 were good (the Fuck tha Police Part 2 wasn't anywhere near as good as the original). Niggaz4Life probably wasn't as good as Straight Outta Compton nor even 100 Miles, though the Intro, Always into Something, Niggaz4Life, Appetite for Destruction, and One Less Bitch were classics. Lotta complete throwaways on that album too though, like Automobile, Findum Fuckem & Flee, Approach to Danger, etc.

It's probably good he did, since NWA got stale after Straight Outta Compton. Meanwhile that collaboration Cube did with the Bomb Squad on his debut was incredible, and Sir Jinx's beats on his later albums were way better than what Dre was doing. Too bad Eazy's solos were shit after the group split; I was always expecting him to put out another classic like Eazy Duz It, but 5150 and It's On Dre were for the most part weak.
