What an interesting/colorful business. We've had cowboys and indians, giants and midgets, the sinister Jap, the demonic Sheik, the pompous German, the Russian bear, the blonde bad boy with his strut. We've had Roadwarriors and The Ultimate Warrior and a Hulk. Ya gotta love it.

I loved Johnny Valentine.

At prime he was just perfection. He came into the Cleveland area in the late 60's and early '70's and he just lit it up. He was the bad guy and set about a series of matches with Johnny Powers, our resident good guy. It was just incredible.

There was a German who also wrestled in Cleveland back then and had a great act "Hans Mortier." His closing hold was a full nelson and he couldn't release it. His manager "Red Berry" had to pry it loose with his cane.

So you know a bunch of rasslin' fans who aren't too bright, right?

How about those who listen to jazz, ya know...

Jellyroll Morton

King Oliver
Bunk Johnson

Miles Davis
John Coltrane
Charlie Parker
Charlie Chtistian
Wes Montgomery

How about those who read...

F. Scott Fitzgerald
Charles Dickens
Ernest Hemmingway
Kurt Vonnegut
Bernard Malamud
John Steinbeck
Robert Louis Stevenson
Norman Mailer
Harlan Ellison
Jack London
Edgar Alan Poe
H.P.Lovecraft

....it's called being well rounded. Now if all you do is watch the rasslin' and think it's real...hmmm? I can do the same thing with a multitude of other interests.

Once you grow up it's all about the behind the scenes/politics involved.

That's why it's enjoyable. Americans don't want to watch grown men "fist fight" in the streets. But, they do want to watch grown men pretend to "fist fight" in the streets. It's the softening of America & Americans after the turn of the last century.

And bless them for their acting prowess and for protecting the "sport" and it's truth. Nobody wants to see them behind the curtain planning it, or, checking on one another after it. But, we know that occurs and it's okay. It has to be that way.

McMahon (current proprieter of the "sport") makes huge amounts of money on this, but, I cite him for giving us exactly what we want and as much as we want. He doesn't grudge, or, ration it. That is American at it's throwback zenith. He doesn't show it, then hide, to where we have search in vain for it and to frustration. It's there. It's always there.

Me too. Though I never liked WCW. It was incomplete and sketchy compared to the WWE at that time. But, yet like you, I turn it on once in a while and the crowds are always large and noisy, so, it's still extremely popular. We had it good, Trill, but, at least we knew it, soaked it in and appreciated it. It will never happen again like that.

Sammartino had that belt for such a long time up there in NY.. Close to 10 years wasn't it?

Superstar Billy Graham's intro music "Jesus Christ Superstar" was very inspiring. Extreme charge.

The Undertaker at prime was arguably the best promotion in the history of Pro Rasslin'. The human condition's fascination with death gave them an excuse to get close to it whether thru their TV, or, at the arena. This time facing a play on mortality they could grin & laugh, or, remain stoic & introspective. Like in real life.

***They had one in Cleveland back in the '60's named Wild Bull Curry. This guy had a skill to where he could hit the opponent with his fist and make the most un-Godly sound of flesh on bone. A very sharp crack. It was a knack and quite effective.

Bobo Brazil & The Sheik was legendary then. Went on for what seemed like a decade twixt Detroit & Cleveland. Brazil could never win. And you'd get frustrated by it (I was just a kid). They must have sensed that because they then started instituting the 2 out of 3 falls match for them. Well, that solved it. Sheik would take the first fall in dastardly fashion. Then Brazil would come out in the 2nd fall and just blitz him. He'd catch full, ko-ko butt him, but, wouldn't let him fall, and butt him 2, or 3 times more. It was just utterly dramatic. He then would pin him for fall 2, tied 1-1. Well, of course in fall 3 The Shiek would produce the legendary "foreign object" and would take the match. But, that small adjustment of the 2 out of 3 enabled Brazil to "win" and sate the customer. Ingenious.

Ok, I didn't read any of the posts following the original post. Even then I only skimmed through it and saw something about the Von Erichs. I loved watching wrestling on Saturday morning and the Von Erichs were my favorites.
