Texas Tech is hopeful a one-time national champion coach has enough left in the tank to pick its basketball program up off the mat.

Tech on Monday agreed to terms with Tubby Smith to become the school’s new basketball head coach. Smith will be introduced during a news conference at 2 p.m. today.

Brian Smith, Tubby Smith’s son, tweeted Monday night: “Props to my pops getting the Texas Tech job.”

Smith was in Lubbock on Thursday to meet with Tech officials and tour the school’s facilities, and the two sides had been in talks since.Smith, 61, replaces Billy Gillispie, who resigned in September amid allegations of player mistreatment and NCAA violations regarding excessive practice time.

The Red Raiders were led this season by interim coach Chris Walker, who guided the team to an 11-20 record and its first win in the Big 12 Conference Tournament in three years...........

Kentucky to Minnesota to Texas Tech.

A clear sign that Tubbs is losing it.

Good get for TT though.

Good get for TT though.

Minnesota wins a tournament game, but still fires Tubs.

I think the clear sign is that the gophers and Tubs had grown tired of each other.

I think the hiring is perfect.

I wanted Walker, we lost Keith Frazier because of this shit and might lose Gray too unless Tubby's a smooth talker.

OTOH, he's proven and could probably lead them to a couple of tournaments, would probably lose in the first/second round.

As long as the program is a dumpster fire, I'd rather have rolled the dice on CW and given him a chance, but in the end Tubby is the best they've had since BK.

No doubt there. I think Minnesota wanted more than 1 tourney win for what they were paying Tubbs.

I think the hiring is perfect.

It is a good hire for Tech. Tubbs is a good coach, runs a good program as well. Just from watching him in the B1G the past couple of years, it just doesn't seem like he has as much fire as he did when he coached UK, but I think he will put together a good progam at Tech, probably about the likes of where the Minnesota program was at.

Minnesota was red hot, ranked in top ten this past year until they got into conference.....and Big 10 basketball this past year was like SEC football. Tubby also mildly complained about how old the facilities are, making it that much tougher to recruit.

If he can get Tech back up to where Minny has been in a lately weaker big xii, I'd be thrilled.

Well I believe "the barn" is by far the oldest arena in the league. I was there about 10 years ago and it is a pretty neat place. I'm not sure if Minnesota has renovated it at all or what their practice facilities were like, but is not in bad shape when I was there, just dated, so I could see why Tubbs might be clamoring a bit about the facilities. The raised floor is akward.

In the B1G he wasn't the top dog of coaches, where as in the Big XII he probably is right there with Barnes, so I would think he would be able to lift up Tech's program past wat Minny was able to do in the B1G.

On the surface hiring Tubby seems to be a good move. I hope it works out for him and Tech. But if it doesn't, then does Tech become the garveyard of old coaches: Bobby Knight, Tuberville, Gillespie?

I'm sure he's better than Rick Barnes.

Since hiring Tubby:
5 star McDonald's all-american de-commits and goes to SMU
lose Josh Gray(star PG, best player)

Shit hire.

Blake

Sucks about Frazier, but I'm not sure anyone Tech hired would have kept him from going with Larry Brown at SMU.

Yeah, I'd still say good hire.

Ah....Tech beating the horns Saturday was very satisfying.

They may not reach 20 wins but sitting at 11-1 right now with that weekend win is pretty sweet.

The tortilla flinging at Aggie will be missed.
Oh, and the goal post impaling attempt as well...

I wonder if that old fart at Bball games is permanently banned.
That was bad ass. Sorta.

"....When just one week after being axed by Minnesota in 2013 Tubby Smith agreed to be the head coach at Texas Tech, more than a few around the college basketball world were left shaking their heads.

What was Tubby thinking? Why so soon? Didn’t the then-61-year-old coach want to take some time off after 22 consecutive seasons as head coach? And why on earth Texas Tech? Wasn’t that an impossible job at a remote spot in a ridiculously difficult hoops conference?

Three years later, Smith is turning heads.

Tuesday night, the Red Raiders rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to*beat TCU 83-79*for their fifth consecutive league win, a first in the school’s 20 years of Big 12 basketball.

Better still, the win improved Texas Tech’s record to 18-9 overall and 8-7 in league play. The Red Raiders are ranked*24th by the RPI*and a solid bet to earn the school’s first NCAA Tournament invitation since 2007.

Said Kansas Coach Bill Self recently, “When we start talking about Big 12 Coach of the Year, I don’t think you have to look much further than Tubby"

"Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith joined an elite group after becoming the 18th coach to accept the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award on Friday.

Smith received the postseason recognition after helping guide the Red Raiders to a 19-win season, which included an NCAA Tournament appearance and earned Big 12 Coach of the Year honors as well.

"Active coaches and athletes were joined in attendance by many former talents from both the collegiate and professional basketball ranks.

Smith recalled sitting alongside champions of the sport, such as Jerry West and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. But it was another Hall of Fame talent Smith encountered who was eager to assist the Red Raiders in their growth and development moving forward.

“Karl Malone [said], ‘coach, just let me come out and visit with your team,’” Smith revealed during a telephone interview. “He wants to come to Lubbock, so I’m like – ‘yes, Karl,’ and it was just a great night.

Malone was in attendance to witness Iowa State forward Georges Niang receive an award in his name, which is presented to the best power forward in college basketball.

The two-time MVP couldn't help but share with Smith his admiration for another Big 12 program.

“His son plays for LSU in football; his son played against us last year," Smith said. "[Malone] goes, ‘I’m really impressed with Lubbock and Texas Tech, coach, you need to get me out there.'"

We'll see. A lot of rumors flying around.

Not sure why Memphis would be that much more attractive than Tech tho. I could see him leaving for a larger school or a perennial power like ucla trying to get back on top.

But Memphis?

Whatever, it's been fun and he set a nice foundation for the next coach if he does leave.

Memphis probably has better basketball facilities and more of a history of success in men's basketball. They had been getting some top recruits not that long ago.

Blake
04-14-2016, 11:46 PM
Yeah, with Calipari, they cheated their asses off. Out of 6 final fours, he's had to vacate 2.

But It's definitely more of a basketball school. Memphis is definitely a better town to live in than Lubbock, and he might get some kind of tie in to the Grizz if he decides to ever go pro.

It's disappointing, but I can't blame him. It's a cut throat business and they take opportunities when they come.
