The Southeastern Conference just won its seventh consecutive national championship, just had a record 63 players selected in the NFL Draft (more than twice as many as any other league) and just signed a blockbuster 20-year deal with ESPN to create a network that will pay SEC schools more money than Boone Pickens can shake a windmill at.

But Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Monday during a Sooner Caravan stop in Tulsa that he's not worried.

Big 12 Conference schools and others around the nation don't have to close some mythical gap.

"Well, it depends on what gap you're talking about," Stoops said. "What are the bottom six doing?"

That's a fair point.

Four of those bottom six did so poorly last year that their coaches got fired. The year before, two SEC coaches were canned. The year before that, it was three.

The only new coach in the Big 12 this season is at Texas Tech, where it seems Tommy Tuberville found himself a better fit in Cincinnati.

As far as that bloated NFL Draft number - one-quarter of the total players drafted last week were from the SEC - it's much the same way: 46 of the 63 came from the top half of the league. The other seven schools produced just 17 draft picks.

Stoops is right about one thing: the bottom of the SEC is no great place to be.

"So they've had the best team in college football," Stoops said. "They haven't had the whole conference. Because, again, half of 'em haven't done much at all. I'm just asking you. You tell me."

The problem for the have-nots is not that Alabama has won three of the last four national championships. It's that, since 2006, Florida has won two and LSU has won one and Auburn has won one. That's four schools winning seven national titles.

It creates an aura of "Who's next?"

And maybe the biggest problem of all is that, for the foreseeable future, is that the top SEC schools will always get the benefit of the doubt in the eyes of pollsters or computers or the College Football Playoff selection committee because of the widely accepted perception that the SEC is America's Best Conference.

Powerhouse LSU only beat Ole Miss by six points? Well, that's because Ole Miss is in the SEC. That makes them great. Sure, they had to win a bowl game just to finish above .500, but that's because they're in the SEC and, well, the rest of the SEC is just a little bit greater this year.

And pay no mind to the inconvenient fact that Ole Miss was plowed at The Grove by some team from Texas - oh, wait, it WAS Texas, the fifth- or sixth-best team in the Big 12 Conference last year. Yeah, best ignore that one.

And conference runner-up Georgia only beat Kentucky by five points? Well, that's because Kentucky is in the SEC, and, by gosh if you don't already know this one, that makes them pretty great, too. They didn't have a winning record, either - OK, they went 2-10, which included 0-8 against the SEC - but hey, it's the SEC.

And please don't look over there where it says Kentucky was routed by cross-state rival Louisville. Or the one where it says the Wildcats lost in overtime to I-AA Western Kentucky.

Surely, Stoops' point is clear now.

"It depends on who you want to listen to," Stoops said. "Listen, they've had the best team in college football, meaning they've won the national championship. That doesn't mean everything else is always the best."

Really, there is no more debate that the SEC is college football's King Kong. It is. But while the natives may blindly worship their giant ape, not every school is a 40-foot gorilla with its own island.

The SEC has had some amazing good fortune during its seven-year conquest.

In 2006, Florida jumped Michigan for the No. 2 spot in the BCS title game after voters decided against an Ohio State-Michigan rematch.

In 2007, two-loss LSU jumped five spots after No. 2 West Virginia was upset by rival Pittsburgh and No. 1 Missouri was trounced by Oklahoma.

In 2008, Tim Tebow's "Braveheart" speech captured voters' imagination after an inexplicable midseason loss to Ole Miss.

In 2010, well, Auburn had Cam Newton.

The gap, Stoops believes, is not as wide as everyone thinks.

"So you're listening to a lot of propaganda that gets fed out to you," he said. "You're more than smart enough to figure it out. Again, you can look at the top two, three, four, five, six teams, and you can look at the bottom six, seven, eight, whatever they are. How well are they all doing?

"What'd we (the Big 12) have, eight of 10 teams in bowl games this year? Again, you figure it all out."

Maybe we should look at some important criteria to determine which conference is superior. Should we? You tell me.

Johnny Manziel

The Heisman winner began his career in the Big 12 in 2011. He was redshirted. You redshirt someone when he’s not good enough to play for you. So Johnny Manziel was not good enough to play in the Big 12.

Then Texas A&M moves to the SEC, and Manziel suddenly suits up and torches the entire conference – including national “champion” Alabama. Manziel wasn’t good enough to play in the Big 12 … yet will go down as one of the greatest players in SEC history. What does that tell you? I’m just asking you. I don’t know. You figure it all out.

NFL quarterbacks

Is starting quarterback in the NFL an important job? I don’t know. You tell me. I hear that it is, but you figure it out. Well, if it is, a full quarter of the presumed 2013 starting quarterbacks in the NFL played in the Big 12 or for schools that joined the Big 12: Ryan Tannehill, Geno Smith, Andy Dalton, Brandon Weeden, Blaine Gabbert, Robert Griffin III, Josh Freeman and Sam Bradford. That seems like a lot. Is it a lot? I’m just asking you.

Meanwhile, only five starting quarterbacks in the NFL are from the SEC. Is eight more than five? I feel like it is, but you tell me. You’re smart enough to figure it out.

Scoring

The Big 12 had four of the Top 10 highest scoring BCS teams in the nation last season. Is it possible to win a football game without scoring? Has a football game ever been won by the score of 0 to minus-1? You tell me. I’m just asking you.

Recruiting

Texas currently has the highest-rated 2014 recruiting class in ESPN’s rankings (http://insider.espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/classrankings?class=2014). Is it good to get the best class of recruits? Does it suggest that a conference is good when a team that went just 5-4 in-conference can reel in the best class in the nation? You tell me.

Draft picks

Three of the first eight picks in the NFL Draft either played the majority of their career in the Big 12 or finished their collegiate career in the Big 12: Luke Joeckel, Lane Johnson and Tavon Austin. No other conference boasted more than two such players. Is that good? I can’t be the one to say. You figure it all out.

Kentucky

The Wildcats were the worst team among all the bottom-feeders in the SEC last season at 2-10 (0-8). After the season they hired someone to turn the program around. They hired Mark Stoops. Is Mark Stoops the brother of Bob Stoops? I’m just asking you. Again, you figure it all out.

Conference realignment

Colorado, Missouri and Texas A&M all left the Big 12 conference in recent years. The last time any of those schools won a Big 12 title was in 2001. Does that suggest they left because they couldn’t handle the level of competition in the Big 12? This is just a random question I’m throwing out there. You tell me.

S-E-C! chant

SEC fans chant the name of their conference all the time, whereas Big 12 fans have no such chant. Even the traditional also-rans that haven’t won a BCS title chant “S-E-C!” Does it seem like SEC pride is a desperate attempt to overcompensate for something? Like a guy going through a mid-life crisis buying a sports car? What else could it really be? I’m asking you. Could it be that I’m simply out of random information to cherry-pick to suggest the Big 12 is better than the SEC at football? You’re smart enough to figure it out. You figure it all out.

So A&M shares a network and doesn't have its own?

Yeah and each institution in the SEC is projected to bring in around 35M per season because of it.

Last fall, we quoted an industry source with in-depth knowledge of media rights contracts who predicted SEC teams would receive between $30 and $35 million dollars once the league renegotiated its new deals with CBS and ESPN, launched its own network, kicked off the new Sugar (Champions) Bowl, and began collecting revenue from college football’s new playoffs. We wrote the same thing again last month when Mike Slive spoke briefly of the SEC’s television plans.

Now, a USA Today Sports analysis shows that SEC schools are indeed in line to earn about — wait for it — $34 million per season beginning in 2014-15.

The LHN network brought Texas close to 8M last season.

So in July 2011-2012, the Longhorn Network was supposed to bring in a projected $10.9 million. However, this first year payment was prorated based upon the actual launch date of the network in late August of 2011, compared to July 1st, 2011. So in reality, the network brought in $9.2 million to be split between 3rd tier rights partner IMG and the University of Texas. Once IMG collects its 14% share, the University is left with $7.9 million for the first year.

The SEC network will bring in around 10-15M annually for all 14 institutions in the conference. The LHN brings only that to the Longhorns. Nobody is saying Texas won't get theirs. They are the most profitable athletic department in the nation. They are all about themselves though and not the betterment of the conference. Tech, and company won't see a dime of that. After reading the actual contract further, it turns out this looks correct, although I wouldn't count the money towards IMG if none of the other schools do.

$10.9 first year (3% increase every year) although it was prorated for the short year, so $9.2 million for the first year sounds spot on.

"
SEC has created the Working Group on Fan Experience and charged it with coming up with recommendations to deal with a new reality in college football: Because of technology, the in-stadium experience is lagging behind what fans can get at home. With a 60-inch, high-definition flat screen, access to multiple games, unlimited replays and with no hassles with traffic, parking or ever-increasing ticket prices, more and more fans are deciding that home is the best place to watch college football."

Same troubles that are plaguing NFL attendance.

The thing about that article that bothers me is the low attendance numbers for student tickets.

As someone who grew up with PAC-10(12) roots, I can't argue with the dominance of ESS EEE SEEE football. It's definitely better than my beloved West Coast league. I would, though, like to see someone end the streak of 7 NCs but I'm not sure anyone has the real distinct possibility of ending it this year. My guess would be The Ohio State but their defense is really green. My two team prediction for the SEC Championship game will be a Bama/Georgia rematch. I think the Aggie/Bama tilt will be the game I'd most likely spectate. Will be interesting to see what Saban has in store for Johnny Football.

But it’s not just Saban; he has a new partner in town in Arkansas’ Bret Bielema, who is also lobbying against this style of offense. Bielema told AL.com (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/06/post_494.html) that he wants to implement a rules change also in the name of player safety to allow a 15-second substitution period after every first down, in an effort to slow down the high-octane offenses and keep guys fresh.

“Not to get on the coattails of some of the other coaches, there is a lot of truth that the way offensive philosophies are driven now, there’s times where you can’t get a defensive substitution in for 8, 10, 12 play drives,” Bielema said. “That has an effect on safety of that student-athlete, especially the bigger defensive linemen, that is really real.”
Will Muschamp and Steve Spurrier were also quoted as being proponents of slowing down the no-huddle attacks, while Gus Malzahn and Hugh Freeze are against it, for obvious reasons.

I like AU to be 4th in the west. They get Ole' Mrs at home. Think the Rebs are still another couple years away. They need all that talent to mature (esp on defense) before they'll be a legit contender, jmo

I can see 7/8 wins for Auburn. They'll certainly be bowling, at least

my ranking looks like this

SEC E

1.Dawgs (because of Murray)
2.Cocks (great defense and should have a better passing game)
3.Gators (only because UGA/USCe are a bit better)
4.Vols (should finally improve)
5.Commodores (peaked last year)
6.Mizzou (finding life with the big kids tough)
7.Cats (although they'll be much better on defense)

SEC W

1.Bama (same-o, same-o - will be shocked if they don't win the natty...again...please somebody prevent that :lol)
2.LSU (intrigued by Cam Cameron running the O. Should finally improve the one area they needed. Only team that can really match up w/ Bama)
3.Aggy (Johnny will be good, but not as good as last year. Much better than those below but not as good as the top two. Lost too much talent, imo)
4.AU (Get on the Gus-bus, motherfuckers. Everything hinges on QB play. If the QB (whoever that will be) sucks, they could be 6th.)
5.Rebs (Rising fast. Still not deep enough but will def be bowling)
6.MSU (meh)
7.Arky (Bielema will be a miserable failure :lol)

I got it like this right now. Bama vs A&M will be interesting but I'll go ahead and say Bama wins that game.

WEST

1/2. Bama 12-0 or 11-1 (possible loss @A&M)
1/2. A&M 11-1 or 10-2 (possible losses to Bama and @LSU. Season highlighted by 8 home games and an incredibly easy OOC schedule. I saw OM as an upset watch game at the beggining of the season but not so much anymore. It's totally possible that they lose to both Bama and LSU again but I think A&M might be able to pull 1 of those off)
3. LSU 9-3 (losses to Bama, Georgia, and 1 of A&M or UF. Incredibly tough schedule. Lost a lot of players. Offense will continue to struggle)
4. Auburn 7-5 (I think they take care of their OOC opponents and take care of OM at home giving them the tie breaker. I think that game vs Tennessee could be the difference between a 7 or 8 win season)
5. Ole Miss 7-5 (Another tough schedule. Vanderbilt to start the year is tough. Texas OOC. I think they start off 2-5 while winning their last 5 contests including another egg bowl win)
6.Arkansas 4-8 (I'll say they beat MSU at home after dropping 7 in a row)
7.State 4-8 (1 conference win vs Kentucky)

EAST

1.Georgia 11-1(Incredible offense. I think they take care of SC at home early in the year but end up dropping another one later in the year)
2.South Carolina 10-2 ( I like SC this year. I wouldn't be shocked to see them beat UGA this season but I'll take the Dawgs for now)
3.Florida 10-2 (L at SC gives SC the tie-breaker. I think the offense will improve but they lose some players on defense)
4.Vanderbilt 7-5 (I think Vandy will continue to be on the up-rise. As long as they continue to win games they are supposed to win, they will pull off an upset somewhere)
5 Missouri 6-6(W over UT gives them tie-breaker. I think they will continue to have a tough time but will field a better team than last season.)
6.Tennessee 6-6 (I'm not incredibly high on Butch Jones but it's going to take him awhile to get going IMO. Incredible players on the OLine and Receiver positions but they will struggle)
7.Kentucky 2-10 (Winless in conference play. Is it basketball season yet?)

Nick Saban Is Like Hitler, Says Alabama Fan Who Loves Nick Saban (http://deadspin.com/nick-saban-is-like-hitler-says-alabama-fan-who-loves-n-830496872)

AL.com's Jon Solomon has written a wonderful article (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/07/post_500.html) about the die-hard Alabama fans who flock to SEC media days with the hope that they will get a chance to meet Nick Saban. Some arrive looking for an autograph, others want to give gifts to Saban, and some just come to pay their respects—and also to glowingly compare Saban to Hitler.
Take it away, Lee from Decatur:
"He's a winner, he just does what he wants to do," says Lee Allen, an Alabama fan from Decatur. "He's kind of like Hitler. He's a dictator. He brought us back to the top and I figure we're going to be here for a while. Money well spent."
Wait, what? Hitler? You mean that as a compliment? "Yeah," Allen says in between discreetly spitting tobacco juice into a water bottle in the lobby.
Allen, a college student, arrived in Hoover on Sunday with his RV, even though SEC Media Days didn't begin until Tuesday. "I had nothing else planned this week," he says.

So that's terrifying. But I suppose we should all be thankful that Lee is just a tobacco-spittin' yutz from Decatur, and not someone who came of age in Germany right around, say, the fall of the Weimar Republic.
Be sure to read the rest of Solomon's article (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/07/post_500.html) in order to get the complete picture of Saban's worshippers. They may actually be crazier than Saban himself.

Not really surprised that this wasn't posted in the recruiting thread

A&M's affect on Texas Recruting after joining the SEC
From Geoff Ketchum of Orangebloods ...

This isn't about doom and gloom. This isn't about screaming "Fire!" in a
crowded theater. This isn't about writing an article that produces clicks
or sells subs or whatever motivation some think might be behind the
genesis of what you will soon read.

This is about keeping it as real as possible and every Longhorn coach,
administrative official and fan would be wise to pay attention. In fact,
anyone with a special interest in the Big 12 should be paying attention
because the information in this section is critical to their
self-interests, as we address the conference's biggest elephant in the
room ...

The SEC.

Two years ago, when Texas A&M made its move to the No. 1 conference in
America, worriers were shouted down when concerns were brought up about
the impact that the sudden change in recruiting dynamics that would take
place with the SEC's implementation of permanent roots in the Lone Star
State. The nervous Nellies were told that it was ridiculous to think that
everything would change just because a school that had lagged behind in
the Big 12 for a decade had left for fewer burnt orange pastures.

At the very top of the list of people scoffing at the notion that A&M's
move would forever change things in this state was DeLoss Dodds and the
rest of the Longhorn administrative staff.

Well, Dodds was wrong. The Longhorn administration was wrong. In fact, not
only were they critically wrong about one of the biggest shifting dynamics
in the history of college athletics, they were incredibly off-base with
the projected timing of any impact that might be created. After years of
dominating and controlling the recruiting process in the state of Texas,
Dodds and Co. overestimated the UT position, believing that whatever
impact might be felt would be outside of their perimeter.

Translation: The Sooners, Red Raiders and Bears of the world might have to
adjust the way things work in their worlds, but the Longhorns are the big
pimp in this state and no amount of SEC presence was going to change that
fact.

Oops. Actually, double oops.

The ugly little truth of the matter is that two years ago the SEC barely
had a presence in the state of Texas and a case can be made that in less
than 24 months the conference has officially taken control of things. You
don't need to take my word for it ... let's just look at the facts.

Consider that two years ago, exactly one player from the ranks of the 2012
Lone Star Recruiting Top 25 signed with an SEC school (not including Texas
A&M) and that was Dallas Wilmer Hutchins defensive back LaDarrell McNeil,
a player that signed with Tennessee and didn't have an offer from either
Texas or Oklahoma. The next highest prospect on the list to sign with an
SEC school was Katy Morton Ranch defensive end Danielle Hunter, who ranked
No. 38 on the list and signed with LSU. In terms of the impact prospects
in Texas that year, that was pretty much the depths of the impact by the
SEC.

Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Florida and Georgia were all
shut out, mostly without so much as a serious sniff from the elite
prospects in the state of Texas. We're talking a mere two seasons ago.

One year later, the dynamics started changed in a big way. The state's No. 1
(Alabama), No. 13 (Alabama), No. 17 (Mississippi State), and No. 24 (Ole
Miss) prospects all landed at schools that were unable to crack a dent in
the previous recruiting year. Four other prospects on the LSR Top 100 list
also signed with SEC schools (not including Texas A&M). Oh, and for the
first time in a very long time, the Longhorns were on the wrong end of two
head-to-head losses.

Keep in mind that I'm not even talking about the success of Texas A&M in
this recruiting discussion, which completely changed, as the Aggies were
able to secure the state's No. 2, No. 10, No. 11, No. 22, No. 23, No. 26,
No. 27, No. 32, No. 34, No. 35 and No. 36 prospects, which was a massive
role-reversal from what they had accomplished in the last half dozen years
previous to the 2012 recruiting class. That's 36 percent of the state's
top 25 prospects headed to the SEC.

The trends are worse.

Consider that in the current 2014 LSR Top 100 rankings, SEC schools (not
including A&M) have already landed commitments from the No. 11, No. 14,
No. 22, No. 33 and No. 37 prospects on the list and this doesn't include
the likes of Tony Brown, Jamal Adams and Solomon Thomas, top 10 prospects
who are all seriously considering SEC schools. Meanwhile, Alabama,
Arkansas and Ole Miss have all already dipped into the Texas talent pool
in the Class of 2015, landing commitments from likely four-star prospects.

Of course, numbers are just numbers. Some will point to the huge number of
prospects in the state of Texas that are available and will suggest that
the data isn't nearly as concerning as I might suggest. Yet, this is about
more than numbers because I'm telling you right now as plainly as I can
that the culture in the state is changing and it's changing in a direction
that should scare the living daylights out of those that have assumed that
the state will forever remain Big 12 country, first and foremost.

The decision between signing with a school in the nation's top league or
going anywhere else is starting to become a major tipping point in the
recruitment of many kids in this state, as they are becoming sold in large
numbers on the idea of being "SEC football players," which currently
embodies the best of the best in college football. Coinciding with the
SEC's rise is the fact that Oklahoma seems almost non-existent among the
top prospects in the Lone Star State at the moment, as the Sooners seem to
fall a little more back to the pack each year, highlighted by the fact
that they don't have a single top 40 commitment on the current 2014 LSR
Top 100. The likes of Baylor, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech appear to be
virtually
powerless against the recruiting strength of the SEC.

That leaves Texas all by itself to ward off the emerging competition,
which is one of the reasons the Longhorns MUST produce big results on the
field this season, as they've gone from the school that never loses
head-to-head battles against anyone to one that is having to scrap to fill
up the 2014 recruiting class with second- and third options.

We're not talking about a little boy crying wolf right now because the
wolf is already eating the little boy and is moving into other homes,
raiding the fridges of those that once scoffed and kicking its feet up on
the living room furniture just because it wants you to know it was there.

This is not a drill. This is not a test. This is for real.

Texas will still get top 5 classes, but it's the other Big12 schools which will ultimately suffer the most, imo. Maybe their growing inability to recruit top kids from Texas (due to the SEC making inroads) has something to do with it :lol

Hilarious to see the butthurt from stoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooops at the B12 media days. Maybe their growing inability to recruit top kids from Texas (due to the SEC making inroads) has something to do with it :lol

I don't think Baylor and OSU will be affected all that much, if you are a certain type of offensive player there are few better places to play/put up huge #'s than with Gundy or Briles. They weren't snagging huge names consistently to start with.

Concerning the HUNH - Very interesting http://trackemtigers.com/

Since last week’s SEC Media Days, it’s been a hot topic among coaches, media figures and bloggers across the country. In an otherwise routine series of press conferences, Auburn coach Gus Malzhan lit the fuse on the subject by saying, “to be honest with you, I thought it was a joke.” Arkansas coach Bret Bielema responded, “I’m not a comedian.” And the debate has raged on.

We’ve seen a lot of opinions on the subject in the past week. I think I enjoyed West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen’s “get over it” take best (http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/23/dana-holgorsen-to-hurry-up-offense-critics-get-over-it/). However, I’ve always had a healthy respect for Bielema’s hard-nosed Wisconsin teams, and I’m curious as to whether his claims have any merit. My answer for such things is typically to look at the numbers. However, the way injuries are reported, or really NOT reported in college football makes those numbers pretty much meaningless. I suppose one might try to work up a “games missed by starters” table, but how would you correlate it to exposure to hurry up offenses?

There are some interesting statistics one can look at, though. The main argument that actually holds some water is that hurry-up teams run more offensive plays, and that more plays pretty much automatically means more injuries. We’ll debate whether this is true later on in this piece, but for now let’s assume that it’s true. From the official Auburn website, (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/archive/aub-m-footbl-archive.html) We can calculate that during Gus Malzhan’s tenure at Auburn as the offensive coordinator, Auburn ran 70.3 offensive plays per game in 2009, 67.7 in 2010, and 63.6 in 2011. Does that sound like a lot of plays?

Consider critic Nick Saban at Alabama (http://www.rolltide.com/sports/m-footbl/archive/alab-m-footbl-archive.html), a proponent of slowing the game down. During the same period, Saban’s offenses ran 67.6 offensive plays per game in 2009, 63.7 in 2010, and 66.5 in 2011. How about Bret Bielema at Wisconsin (http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-footbl/archive/wis-m-footbl-history.html)? His teams ran 70.8 offensive plays per game in 2009, 66.2 in 2010, and 66.9 in 2011. Last year, Bama ran 64.1, and Wisconsin ran 66.1.

Averaging the yearly totals, Auburn ran 67.2 offensive snaps per game during that era, Alabama ran 65.9, and Wisconsin ran 68.0. Hmm. Bielema ran more snaps than Malzhan? Where was the concern for other teams’ defensive players? Seems that in fact there was no significant statistical difference in the number of snaps run by these three teams.

Well, maybe Auburn put together more long drives, that kept the defense on the field for extended stretches? Nope. In fact, Auburn had a bunch of long touchdown plays in those years, which put the offense back on the bench after only a few snaps. In 2010, Auburn had 150 drives outside of overtime or half-ending clock-’ems. Only 18 of those drives ran 10 plays or more.

So, now that we’ve eliminated the number of plays, and the length of drives from Bielema’s argument, the only conclusion left is that increased defensive risk is because the defense is not ready when a quickly paced offense lines up. There was an interesting piece (http://cfbmatrix.com/speed-may-kill-but-slow-gets-you-hurt/) run last week on cfbmatrix.com. The author compiled some stats that show that while “slow-paced” teams run 10 or more plays less than the “fast-paced” teams, they actually lose more starters to injury than fast teams. How can this be?

I’d argue that when a traditional offense and defense meet, everyone is braced for impact, reads are surer on defense, and the speed and power of collisions on the field are greater. The no huddle teams tend to have more blocks and tackles made on the edges of the field, away from the crushing mass of offensive linemen. Ergo, it could be argued that the fast paced game is actually SAFER for players than traditional football!

The jury is still out on the last argument, in my opinion. But the idea that Malzhan has caused a rash of injuries in the SEC with his offense is pure bunk, clearly. My final conclusion is this: Bret Bielema had better have his defense properly conditioned and trained, or they’ll give up a ton of yards in the fast-paced SEC West. History shows that Bielema will have his guys ready. Whining about the hurry-up won’t help him, but at least we are now pretty sure that his guys won’t be getting any more injuries than they would against old-school teams.

Aggie DL reportedly killed driving on no sleep:

http://jalopnik.com/texas-a-m-player-driving-on-no-sleep-killed-in-overni-961952555

Texas A&M freshman football player Polo Manukainiu was driving to Texas yesterday from Utah. He Tweeted that he was doing it on no sleep. His car reportedly crashed outside Albuquerque, NM overnight and he was killed.P

Details are scarce right now, but what we do know is that Manukainiu was on his way back from Utah. He was supposedly with four friends in the car. As the drive began, he tweeted this:

22 hour drive back to Texas on no sleep. Oh my 

Overnight, his car crashed north of Albuquerque. MyFoxDFW reports that along with Manukainiu, two friends were also killed. Two other people in the car were injured.P

There is no word as to the cause of the crash or who was driving when it occurred, so we aren't sure that it was related to exhaustion. No matter what, it's incredibly depressing that the 19-year old who joined A&M last year is no longer with us.

SEC has 10 bowls guaranteed

The SEC will have guaranteed bowl spots for at least 10 of its 14 members beginning in 2014, sources told ESPN.

The bowl affiliations will be filled after any SEC teams qualify for the College Football Playoff semifinals.

SEC blog
SEC ESPN.com's Chris Low and Edward Aschoff write about all things SEC football in the conference blog.
More:
• Blog network: College Football Nation

Following the semifinals, the next-highest-ranked SEC team will advance to the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Also, in years the Discover Orange Bowl does not host the national semifinals, a team from the SEC, Big Ten or Notre Dame will play in the Orange Bowl against the ACC.

The SEC will send a team to the Orange Bowl a minimum of three years during the 12-year contract.

After SEC teams are placed in the playoffs, Sugar and/or Orange bowls, the SEC will have guaranteed bowl spots for nine more teams, sources said.

The SEC's next pick will go to the Capital One Bowl, sources said.

After the Capital One Bowl (Orlando, Fla.), six bowls will be pooled together and share the next six selections. Sources said the bowls that will share the SEC's second through seventh selections are: AutoZone Liberty (Memphis), Belk (Charlotte, N.C.), Franklin American Mortgage Music City (Nashville, Tenn.), Outback (Tampa, Fla.), Taxslayer.com Gator (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Texas (Houston).

The SEC's final two bowl slots will be the AdvoCare V100 (Shreveport, La.) and BBVA Compass (Birmingham, Ala.).

In the Capital One Bowl, an SEC team will face a Big Ten team unless a Big Ten team is chosen for the Orange Bowl. When that occurs, the ACC would replace a Big Ten team to face the SEC.

The SEC's opponents in the remaining eight bowls are: Belk (ACC), Gator (ACC/Big Ten), Music City (ACC/Big Ten), Liberty (Big 12), Outback (Big Ten), Texas (Big 12), AdvoCare V100 (ACC) and BBVA Compass (American).

Excluding the College Football Playoff semifinals, Sugar and Orange bowls, the SEC will face another "power five" conference in eight of its nine bowl games.

I'm just talking as a season ticket holder, I hope we at least get another top 25 caliber OOC opponent at home. I'm not talking about the difficulty of the schedule or anything like that.

This is still all bridge scheduling anyway. Other things are going to change in the next couple years but I'm happy with the two big moves (LSU on Thanksgiving weekend and South Carolina as our permanent cross division opponent)

We've played up to 8 true freshmen at a time on D. It's been bad, but not a huge surprise.

Yeah, I knew about the injuries. I also think Rice is playing well. Wasn't putting too much into it. You guys pulling away in the 2nd half was inevitable

Rice is going to be trouble in C-USA. I would run both QB's out there on the reg, give teams different looks. Add Ross in there and they should be a bowl team, imo

Owls also seem to be well-coached, all Aggie is doing is out-talenting them.

They should win the conference title if McHargue stays healthy especially with Tulsa taking a step back.

Par for the course, for better or worse. His feeling of being "untouchable" is what fuels his game, and makes him such a relentless doucheB.

Sumlin can't NOT play him. He'd never survive the backlash. His line "he wasn't coming back in regardless of the situation" was just to save face.

I really don't like seeing it either. I simply go with it until it inevitably backfires on or off the field.

My prediction: JFF doesn't finish the season, one way or the other.
