Tyson Chandler, Knicks Agree On Contract: Free Agent Center Coming To New York

Amidst all the clamor on Thursday about NBA deals that weren't completed, there was relatively scant attention paid to one that is apparently done: The Knicks have reportedly agreed on a deal that will bring free agent center Tyson Chandler to Madison Square Garden.

A key presence in the paint for the world champion Dallas Mavericks last season, Chandler has reportedly agreed to a 4-year deal worth $58 million with the Knicks. Initially, it was unclear if the Knicks were going to orchestrate a sign-and-trade deal with the Mavs, a more complex three-team deal, or if New York would use the amnesty rule to clear the contract of Chauncey Billups off the books in order to sign the 29-year-old directly.

On Friday, Chandler appeared on the "Ben and Skin Show" on ESPN 103.3 in Dallas and confirmed his intention to sign with the Knicks. Asked about his new deal, Chandler responded:

"It was with the Knicks. But, you know, nothing is absolutely certain until you put ink to paper," said Chandler, who indicated the deal came together quickly. "So, I'm just working on that part."

Chandler also revealed that, as far as he knew, the deal would not be a sign and trade with the Mavericks. Asked why he chose the Knicks, Chandler spoke about the potential for success in the Big Apple.

"I just think the future of the team, you know, being able to play alongside Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and the young talent that they already have, I feel like puts us in contention over the next four or five years," Chandler said on the radio.

Prior to the Knicks' swoop for Chandler, the Golden State Warriors were considered the most likely landing spot. Once reports of the Chandler-to-Knicks deal spread, the question turned to whether the Knicks would ship either Amar'e Stoudemire or Carmelo Anthony to New Orleans in a deal that would yield Chris Paul. Those rumors seemed quashed by the widely-reported deal sending Paul to the Lakers. However, with the NBA controversially vetoing that swap, the Knicks could again look to pair Chandler with his former running mate... for #basketballreasons.

Story developing...

Hey mono (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/09/tyson-chandler-knicks-agree-contract-nba-free-agent_n_1139385.html), a penny for your thoughts? :downspin:

Cuban painstakinly built that team and then just sits back on his honkers and lets it evaporate before his eyes. It's almost like a bad dream. A fucking nightmare.

& wanted(s) to hand the money to Howard. Chandler is a cerebral entity who understands the game's intricacies both in-game and in-locker room. Cuban had it all and just let drift away. Maybe he'll make us an offer for Howard after the season. Howard will get max money and we'll get out from under him.

Let's play a retroactive game. Guess who posted this shitty take:

Tyson is truly a punk bitch if this is true....Mavs trade for you and you come to a team with good chemistry...good guys and win it all ....then you act like a douche bag. Get paid but don't be an ass.....get out of Dallas dummy...you ain't as good as you think

This dude posted the goods though:

That's just it:::Chandler never said a fuckin' word, nor blew his own horn. Everybody else did it for him. Then when it got down to cases he delivered on the spot--ran everybody off'n' the paint area, one at a time---made it real uncomfortable to be down in there, so everybody one at a time started drifting off'n' the paint area. Chandler did what Dirk could never do, Cuban could never do, what the Mavs could never do. Chandler rang.

Give him the fucking money

Dallas is in no position to deal. How about bring back the team that won it, with addition of a healthy Butler and try to defend your title. A healthy Dallas is just as good as any team out there. You owe Tyson and JJ. Cuban was foolish to burn money on so many worthless players in the past, now he wants to play hardball with the guys that brought him a title. Other FA's will take note of that.

Hey LkrFan, while we're reminiscing on past takes, could you remind us all of who posted these?

People fail to acknowledge that Kobe had to be an MJ/Scottie clone for the Lakers to be successful. He's lead the Lakers in assists and scoring for years. Now with Nash onboard, he can go into attack mode and leave the playmaking primarily to Nash. Teams will pay for tripling him with the game on the line. Nash will get open look after open look. Nash's midrange game will also be deadly playing with the weapons LA has.

This season should be fun. Get your popcorn ready. :toast

If he remains healthy, yep. He literally makes everybody better. Unlike my main man Sessions, he won't shit the bed in the playoffs. He made Gortat shoot like 56% - imagine what he'll do for Bynum and Pau (I don't think D12 is coming to LA). Kobe respects him and will defer when necessary.

We do need more athletes on the perimeter though. No use on getting Nash if he doesn't have the horses to run with. I suspect the roster, as currently constructed, is not the one we'll see in November.

We'll see you guys in the Finals. :toast

...and I guarantee you the Lakers' did their homework on this. No way they continue to dangle Bynum all summer if they were not 100% sure that D12 would be healthy if they traded for him.

You should be PO'd with Daryl Moron tbh.

Ah, Tyson. Letting him go is genius in some ways. His legend only grows with the absence, like a musician who dies too young.

We never had to see Tyson fail. All we saw was success upon success with him. And of course, he was on hand for The Mother's Day Massacre, the curbstomping so severe we get asshurt threads like this one years after the fact. We will always have that, and whatever happened, and whatever will happen, that makes it all worth it.

and it wasn't a bad move business-wise either. cuban avoided getting stuck with a long contract, while maintaining a decent team that was still good enough to make the playoffs the next year (swept in first round though). their playoff-attending streak would probably last longer had they re-signed TC, but it's not like he would win them another NBA title w/o the ambition and appetite that drove them to the summit in 11.

mavs are in a good position to start rebuilding now and their financial health is good, at least they don't have a payroll topping 100m and an average age of 33 something.:lol cuban knew he was lucky enough to steal a championship before the window was closed, and he also knew his team wouldn't have better luck than the 08' celtics. 11' mavs ain't the best team to ever win it, but they still won it anyway. a satisfied mind is an eternal feast
