Google and the City of Austin, Texas have sent out invites for a press conference for "a very important announcement" next week, according to VentureBeat, and it is expected that the two will reveal that the city will be the next to receive Google Fiber. VentureBeat cites "multiple sources" that tell the website that the announcement will revolve around Google's gigabit internet service, but it's possible that the event will reveal some other partnership, like a new Google campus.

Honestly, as amazing as it is, I'm thrilled with my internet right now and I don't really pine for anything better. Of course if GF came to the Bay I'd buy it in a heartbeat but as for now, I'm pretty happy with how fast mine is currently.

Everyone else in the world.

100mb connection is good enough for todays standards, wtf is going to fully utilize 1gb connection?

The only thing I wish would be better about my connection is my ping, 100mb is indeed fast enough.

100mb connection is good enough for todays standards, wtf is going to fully utilize 1gb connection?

The reason that no one can use a 1gb connection is because no one wants to create a product for non-existing infrastructure. Remember web pages in the 90s that were all text because even a lot of photos took up bandwidth? As soon as the bandwidth increased, so did the content. I'm not saying that suddenly 300mb webpages will spring up overnight, but now that the foundations are being laid, it's going to happen eventually.

I wonder if gigabit ATT could mean that U-verse wouldn't be so horribly compressed. That might be worth it.

just like HD content the tv stations dont wanna upgrade their own infrastructure, delivering lower bit rate HD content..its fkn horseshit....

I'll be making the switch if my area code is lucky enough to get fiber; TWC is the absolute worst in regards to TV and customer service. My speeds are actually solid, but it's almost a no-brainer considering GF will be more affordable and with more bang for the buck.

If not, I'll go with Grande. I hear nothing but good things about them.

That's the kind of thinking that stifles innovation. Give people time and they will have plenty of things to utilize that kind of speed.

And it looks like Provo, UT is next...

That's closer to what we normally get too, 100/50... we have a bunch of servers running at the office though, and that drags down the speed test.

This is RR Turbo.

If I am offered 100x (or even close to that) for the price they mention, I'd jump on it.

I have the RR Wideband, $60/mo yet my Netflix still pauses in the evenings:
