Dodged a huge bullet yesterday...

Was coming back to San Antonio yesterday from a wedding in Ft.Worth and took the scenic route coming home...cut across to 281 from Alvarado and headed south. I was a few miles south of Lampasas on a 4 lane stretch without a median...traffic was pretty heavy but flowing smooth...I was southbound running 75 and my wife was asleep in the passenger seat. I stilll don't know exactly what happened but suddenly there was a northbound out of control rocking jeep full of teenagers right in front of me..I assume he was texting or not paying attention and ran up on the car in front of him too fast and instead of hitting him jumped out in my lane...man...it happened that fast. I popped the brakes and bailed for the shoulder and we just cleared each other by about a foot or so going 120+ mph right at each other. I got off the brakes when I hit the dirt and rode it out until I slowed enough to get back on the road...I was lucky there wasn't a culvert there but I would have taken a culvert over a head on with that jeep. Funny thing is my sister had just texted me and I had considered texting her back and decided to wait until I stopped. If I had been looking down at my phone when that happened we would have all been dead.

that's why i never drive faster than 90 mph even on freeways. i have total confidence in my driving skills (in fact my skills have been improved alot since last time i got busted in south palm beach) but you can never assure everyone has good skills and such high level of security awareness that i have. a cautious driver would never exceed 100 mph imho, so even if a fuckhead strays in my way i'd have enough time to stop my car

90 MPH aint shit, but I wouldn't want to go much faster on most US roads. The fastest I have driven in the states since I was young and careless, was in 2000, after I bought my Z28. I took it to 135 MPH. The car would go faster, but I was in 6th gear, would have had to drop to 5th for more torque, and didn't want to go faster on I5 to Tacoma. Not only did the freeway start to feel... unsettling... at that speed, but it wasn't a long enough stretch to feel safe to not get ticketed.

You should have a general rule of thumb, not to pass anyone by much. I don't like to pass by more than about 10 - 15 MPH. If there are other people on the road, don't be the idiot that takes them by surprise, by passing then by 50+ MPH. Some people freak out.
