Landmark industrial hemp farming bill becomes Kentucky law

Kentucky has passed bill SB50 for industrial hemp farming, which has now become law. The bill received strong bipartisan support in the Senate, but was contentious making its way through the House.

They still need permission from DEA, don't they? What is landmark about this?

Marijuana is a type of hemp. Kind of like the square and rectangle. A square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is rarely a square. I don't think the DEA can regulate it if there are clear distinctions, but I'm not very solid that.

Several other states have passed similar laws, and all are awaiting DEA permission. Hemp is classified (incorrectly) as a controlled substance.

Obama Wants More Green Jobs? Let's Start with Hemp

Hemp could bring back sorely needed employment in the American heartland. But the drug warriors stand in the way.

Banning hemp is even stupider than criminalizing marijuana. America has so many fucked up "puritanical/moralist" laws.

Hemp also has the main medical component, CBD, cannibinoid (it doesn't make you high, THC does)

New Pew Poll Finds Majority of Americans Now Support Making Marijuana Legal

WASHINGTON - April 4 - The Pew Research Center announced today that, for the first time in its 40 years of polling on the issue, a majority of Americans (52%) support making marijuana legal. Just 45% said they think marijuana should remain illegal. Its report on the survey notes that a Gallup poll conducted in 1969 found just 12% supported making marijuana legal and 84% were opposed.

Pew's nationwide survey of 1,501 adults was conducted March 13-17. Detailed survey results are available at http://www.people-press.org/2013/04/04/majority-now-supports-legalizing-marijuana

BigPharma and BigAlcohol will spend $10Ms more blocking mj/hemp legalization, just as they did in CA. DC politicians are always WAY BEHIND the citizens and the military (racial integration, gay/lesbian acceptance, etc)

Is this landmark because it's in Ryan's state, or because they aren't the first state to do so?

KY :lol Home asshole Rand Paul

KY loving illegal hemp is an echo of KY ridge runners brewing white lightening and running (in "stock cars") from the revenooers to escape paying federal taxes on alcohol.

I went to this thing called "Hempfest" when I lived in Germany and it was pretty cool. Despite what you might imagine given the name, it was more of a trade show to show all of the plant's uses. They even had a Mercedes there that was built to run entirely off of hemp oil. It is idiotic not to allow at least industry hemp. You have to smoke something like 16 PLANTS to get the same buzz as one gets off of one joint.

I don't think there is anything psychoactive in hemp at all. It's incredibly nutritious to boot.

Hemp, as a strain of cannabis, does have THC in it, but in an amount so small that you would die of smoke inhalation before you got high.
