I am beyond shocked. I know he had been struggling, but why do this now unless there is someone you are so high on that you think can help you for the playoffs.

Not only is it a huge surprise, but you have to worry about the impact this has on team morale.

This just makes no sense unless Jack just can't focus on basketball after losing his child. If that's what happened then I can understand, but otherwise? He's too valuable a defensive player to just cast aside for even a really bad slump.

DPG21920
04-12-2013, 04:29 PM
I cannot imagine it would be behavioral at all, but who knows. If they need another type of player in their minds, Jax was probably the most expendable from a long-term perspective. They would not waive Baynes as they seem to like him as evidenced by bringing him over and giving him guaranteed money. They seem to like Cory as well and he's young. With Manu hurt, having Patty/Neal/Nando is probably necessary and Jax was an aging Free Agent so he seems to be the most expendable.

Still shocked and this is a horrific way to enter into the playoffs. Team is in total disarray.

jestersmash
04-12-2013, 04:39 PM
Offensively he was arguably the worst player in the league (certainly bottom 15 or 20 of players who received comparable minutes), but SJax was still a potentially important asset on defense given his size. He has the right sized body to guard quicker 3s.

I know Pop preaches team defense and all but it starts with solid 1 on 1 defense. You can't allow guys like Durant or Lebron to constantly force your help guys to rotate. That's a recipe for disaster.

I mean I had a good idea that we wouldn't re-sign him given how awful he's been on offense, but I never thought we would just outright waive him so close to the playoffs. He's provided not even half of the offense that R.J. provided.

Wow.

Presuming they're all available, I'd think McGrady, Walker, Greene and possibly Brown (they see him as more PF), are candidates. Realistically though, with the possible exception of McGrady, none would be in the playoff rotation anyway.

By and large, they should be able to get away with Green/Ginobili playing backup SF, though. Obviously, this hurts for depth purposes, particularly against Durant/James (if they get that far, of course). But it pretty much guarantees Neal won't be playing PG and it means more shooting/play making in the rotation in general.

Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA (https://twitter.com/WojYahooNBA) now (https://twitter.com/WojYahooNBA/status/322828462719127552) Spurs and Jackson discussed a release prior to trade deadline, but sides agreed to go forward together for rest of season, source says.

It explained the Reddick rumors. Spurs were looking at an extra wing because there were troubles around Jack.

If I had to guess why, going off szkorhetz' post...maybe it was about an extension? Hes been known to have little fits in the past when his contract situation isnt stable. Especially considering how poorly and the amount of time hes been playing as of late. Id say money was involved in his meltdown.

Huge blow though, out of nowhere. Everything seems to be falling apart. :(

I agree Jack's role has been pretty up and down, as has his play. Some of it due to injuries, some of it due to personal stuff, he's had a bad season. But i know a lot of folks thought that'd change when the playoffs came around.

But with Diaw's news, and the potential for Jack to play more (unless he was told he wouldn't be) this is just craziness.

Jack seemed like a good teammate but he must have blew up during practice or behind the scenes. The Spurs usually honor their agreements and if they agreed to hold onto Jack until the season was over he must have fucked up pretty bad for them to go against that.

Well, that is a huge blow to the bench. Jax gave mental toughness, a spark and he could get on a streak and score plus he played defense. Oh well, one less body and a lot weaker. Don't know what the disagreement was about but that's just horrible timing.

Good news, tbh, addition by subtraction, since Pop would have allocated him PT..

:lol Stephen Jackson is fucking horrible, as I've been saying all year..he has always been overrated, but this year's version of Jackson was one of the worst players I've ever seen on any level of basketball..

This doesn't change anything for the Spurs..his only potential use was another defender to throw at Lebron and Durant, but he wouldn't have made a notable difference, obviously..the Spurs bench will continue to struggle without Ginobili and Diaw, but Jackson wouldn't have helped..

Playing Green or Ginobili at SF is not ideal, especially defensively, but it's better than Jackson getting any minutes..having shooters on the perimeter is more dangerous than having a negative player like Stephen Jackson, tbh..

The Spurs will sign a wing player, but I doubt he will see any PT in the playoffs..

This also essentially guarantees that Kawhi is going to play 40+ in the playoffs, which is great news..

I agree with DPG that symbolically, this is troubling, since a team in a tailspin waiving a rotation player a few days before the season is a bad sign..from a basketball perspective, it's good news, tbh..

Spurs aren't signing anybody at this point in the season that's contributing in the playoffs. This means that Green/Manu/Neal are going to have to man the backup SF position.

If anything, this guarantees that Kawhi is playing 40+ mins a game in the playoff which can only be a good thing.

But this is where Diaw being out hurts us very badly. Jack would have been an adequate 4 in Boris' absence. Now the Spurs are extremely thin up front.

This makes no fucking sense. With Diaw out and Manu banged up, the last thing we needed was another wing player straight cut! I'm losing my mind here. Not that Jax was this incredible player but our depth is disgustingly thin right now. Blair/Bonner will be the first big off the bench? No Jax to play the stretch 4. The guy that best physically matches up with KD and Bron. This is blowing my mind. Call this a meltdown, but in addition to all the shit/injuries we've gotten late season this is just dumb on surface level.

Ah ok. Yeah I suppose that's fair. Granted, we've always been under the radar so the lack of media coverage isn't much of a surprise, although I kind of hope the media jumps on it and investigates further. I really want to know the details of what happened between Jack and Pop and/or the Spurs FO, and those kinds of details won't come out unless the media pressures the Spurs F.O. to say something (although simply pressuring the Spurs F.O. with questions doesn't guarantee that such questions will be answered, but still).

Yeah. Is Brown available? I know they think he's more PF, but we're talking about a non rotation spot here and someone who'd be used strictly in specific match-ups or in case of injury or foul trouble to Leonard. He's not as good a defender as McGuire, but he's not a bad defender and he's a better shooter.

I'm surprised this move didn't come in conjunction with a replacement. Considering the limited amount of time they have before the playoffs, you'd think they'd want to bring someone in as soon as possible. I don't get it.

Jackson must have really f-ed up for the organization to go in this direction. As a team with injuries to two of your three core players and your third bigman, getting rid of another body provides toughness and versatility is counterproductive despite his numbers. Yes, Jackson has been a terrible player this year--but I'm sure he would've contributed something positive during the postseason. At the very least he was an option, now the Spurs no longer have that.

Considering the limited amount of time they have before the playoffs, you'd think they'd want to bring someone in as soon as possible. I don't get it.

The replacement has most likely already been decided but I don't expect much.

Could they just bring Bertans over sooner since we won't get a difference maker anyway?

I don't really care about what happened, but what it means for the postseason and maybe even beyond.

Spurs won't make any changes.. they're subtraction by subtraction just shows where this team is headed.. Why can't I come on here and see that we cut Matt Bonner.

I would be okay with it if we had James Anderson sitting in d-league. Huge hole made especially considering Diaw is ailing.

Yeah, I know. But is he available and eligible for the playoffs?

Unless Pop wants to get shot he'd better get a restraining order keeping Jack 23.75 feet away at all times.

Problem with that (if it comes to it) would be against OKC. Kawhi is bound to get into foul trouble at some point and there's no one else to throw at him and more importantly be physical with him.

My thought process is that I would be happy if the Spurs even make it to the WCFs and have a puncher's chance, tbh..

I don't believe Jackson would have had an impact on making it that far, he would be a huge liability against any of the potential fast-paced matchups, particularly Denver..

People here think one move automatically constitutes making another one. The Spurs don't operate in that fashion. They'll probably just shuffle around the players they have.

With the news about Manu's tear and Diaw's injury, this Jack news is just meh to me. It's already been a shitty end to the season, might as well go all out. :lol

Jax will be out of the league bc of this. He's stupid. When you look like you got nothing left and then you throw such a tantrum that Pop waives you, you are done.

Jax is overrated on this site. He's not Rob Horry. Only issue is we are thin at the three. But Jax must have locker room cancer to get waived four games before the playoffs and the injury situation what it is. Jax is dumb and selfish doing this to his teammates and himself.

LOL, what? Jack is right up there with Rob for most important role-players in franchise history.

Great point. Make the FO look stupid with the unbalanced roster they assembled.

We won't get anyone as good as James Anderson, they messed up.

Not available and I doubt Spurs have the time to do something complicate like buying out an overseas player.

The last day to sign a player is Wednesday.

Advanced stat guy isn't able to comprehend the possibility of (1) Stephen Jackson getting hot in the postseason and knocking down big shots or (2) Stephen Jackson having a big impact on the defensive end.

He defended Durant better than Kawhi during the WCF last year.
