(CNN) -- Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant will be out for six to nine months after rupturing his Achilles tendon, a Lakers Twitter message said Saturday, citing team trainer Gary Vitti.
The injury occurred Friday against the Golden State Warriors. The news came after Bryan had an MRI.
Asked if the timetable means Bryant will be back next season, Vitti said on Twitter "that's the plan."
A ruptured Achilles could take up to a year to heal, according to Will Carroll, sports injuries lead writer for Bleacher Report. This is the 16th season in the league for the 34-year-old.

"This is such BS! All the training and sacrifice just flew out the window with one step that I've done millions of times! The frustration is unbearable. The anger is rage. Later, Bryant called the injury the first step in a new challenge.
"One day, the beginning of a new career journey will commence. Today is NOT that day," he wrote. The post received more than 136,000 likes.
According to an earlier tweet from the Lakers, Bryant could tell what the injury was before seeing a doctor.
"I was just hoping it wasn't what I thought it was," Bryant said, according to the tweet.
The Lakers have two games left in the regular season, both at home. They face the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday and the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.
After beating the Warriors 118-116, the team is one game ahead of the Utah Jazz for the final spot in the NBA's Western Conference playoffs.

This is exactly what I thought of when I saw Kobe go down. Not the comeback part, but the reaction players have when they know they just popped their Achilles.

I just laugh at all the warrior stuff I hear thrown around. I'm sure many on this board have played through injuries at some point in their lives. Kobe is "tough" by todays NBA standards, but nowadays professional athletes are just so damn pampered their whole lives they have to exaggerate injury as an excuse if they don't perform well.

I am nowhere near professional athlete level, but I have rolled my ankles playing ball numerous times and kept playing that day, and that's just playground ball. I severely sprained my ankle playing high school ball in a tourney. My ankle swelled up to a grapefruit, and I played the 10am game the next morning. Granted, both my ankles permanently look like grapefruits now :lol, but Kobe is not the only one that plays though it "for the love of the game". I'm sure plenty others on this board have similar stories.

I hate when I see todays basketball players rolling around in agony (college and pros) when they take a fall I've taken a hundred times playing ball in the gym on the playground, in the backyard. That includes Spur players too! Of course there are legitimate spills, but most of the falls can be walked off without laying on the ground for 5 minutes wincing and rolling around.

Suggs had a partial tear and plays a much slower paced sport. Beckham did have a complete tear, but plays in a sport that demands much less athleticism. A more comparable example is Chauncey Billups, who took a year to recover from a partial tear. But yeah, Kobe is this near-divine specimen that possesses superhuman qualities and will recover from one of the most severe injuries in sports in just a few months.

but dont you agree that having spent so much time together, that helps them play better together, as well as set a good example for the young ones coming in as well.

but my point with miami was that the relationship wade and lbj had made them gel better together on the court, and that the miami players rallied around that, but still failed. some chemistry has to be there to get to the top, but championship teams have to all know how to play together, and it takes time.
