View Full Version : Lakers: D'antoni takes light hearted dig at Kobe's coaching...defends himself

Hmmm...so you run Kobe Bryant into the ground and now you're making jokes eh? As I said earlier, Jim Buss is the best thing that ever happened to Laker haters.

On Kobe coaching from the hospital

@basketballtalk

D'Antoni's response to Kobe's tweet that he would call at halftime with adjustments: "I'll be sure to turn my phone off."

On Kobe playing too many minutes thus resulting in what may be a career ending injury

"It was the decision that we had to make at the time, and it was the decision (that was made) with Kobe," D'Antoni told USA TODAY Sports on Sunday before his team hosted San Antonio. "He was very insistent on it. I was a little reluctant, but he said he could do it. He felt great.
"We kept checking every day with the trainers and him — where are ya? How are ya? What are you doing? And to be honest with ya, I don't think one has anything to do with the other."

Bottom line is Dantoni didn't know when enough was enough...of course Kobe's gonna wanna stay in...it was his job to ensure that Kobe got at least...at least 5 min of rest...it's ridiculous. and even in his last game he kept getting hurt prior to the season ending achilles...and Dantoni never took him out to rest not once even when he was obviously grimacing...it's a complete failure of coaching in my view. Dantoni knows he fucked him by bowing to Kobe's pressure to play non-stop because of his ego and Mid would have us believe it's the black coaches with no sense :hat

True story if as a a coach you cant find 4 minutes per half (2 mins. per quarter) of rest for your best player then you are a crappy coach period.
I dont care if Morris sucks he can give you 2 mins a half ...

This is why Kobe could never play for Pop. He would want to sit Kobe in game 5 of the regular season to rest, Kobe would say no, then Pop would have to show him he's in charge and waive him that day.

:lol ohh really...Shaq was the most dominant and physically intimidating force the NBA has ever seen and yet Kobe went toe to toe and relegated him to servant status..banished him from the Kingdom...what makes you think a mild and quiet Tim Duncan would have stood a chance against the Ghengis Khan style warlord Kobe...Duncan and I say this in no disrespectful terms would have been Kobe's bitch...Shaq just opted to move on...

Nonsense. You want to blame (i.e, "sue") someone, Killa. Because that's the American way. But, shit happens. Be extremely grateful that no shit has happend to us in over 20 years.

I'm grateful that D'Antoni broke it open and gave Kobe his head. I'm glad he plays a short bench. He tried all those guys. They all failed. It's not kindergarten. It's a job. You get your chance. If you can't do it, go sit down and we'll try the next guy. In this case the next guy was as shitty as the first guy.

disagree....it's a basic war strategy...as a commander you can let soldiers fight all night with no rest.but they'll be weary in the morning...and prone to making crucial mistakes that could cost lives...that's why in ancient Rome the Praetorian guard worked shifts no matter how deft their fighting skills.

All I asked for was 5 min of rest time...I don't care how shitty your team...is 1 minute rest each quarter too much to ask? really 1 fucking min of rest?

I think you misunderstood ... not saying ... I blame D'antoni for the achilles injury you are right Cully, crap happens.

But to not hold that coach accountable for failing to develop at least 2 minutes as quarter of playing time from either Morris or Ebanks makes little sense even if you say dont shoot just pass we are talking about 2 minutes!!! if they cant do that they need to be in the D-league or Europe tbh ...

Killakobe81

The other thing Cully, is it's his M.O. he loves to run short rotation and I understood when the season started and we had ALL this talent "on paper" but as the bodies started dropping he had to find a way for 2 minutes a quarter if he used those only to rest Kobe he is still playing 40 minutes down the stretch ...but those 8 minutes would be impactful maybe he still gets hurt ...but it's still an indictment that he is so slow to adjust. Jamison gets no minutes and only injury allowed Clark to shine ...he also was not using hill enough here or in NY ... none of those guys are stars but can play a role ...one of the thing PJ was a master at ... I hated the randomness of his sub patterns but he found roles for every vet he just hated to play rooks.

He's the coach, not the GM. He gave those guys a chance early on. They failed chronologically. Obviously the front office did not want to change them out. I wouldn't a played them either. We didn't have "2 minutes" anymore. We still don't. I looked at the box score and D'Antoni piddled a smidge last nite with those losers. So he's affected now and giving in. And he was this||close to making a statement.

Oh trust me Morris is still garbage in my book ... but when you lose the players we lost you just say "here is what I need son, dont try to hard and give me two minnutes of hustle and defense". Didnt Morris even shoot an airball and a side of the back-board? You are right he blows but he can run around and defend for 2 mins.

You're still trying to put it (Kobe's injury) back together using the [time machine]. Shit happens. It's over. You have to move on. Bryant turned in less than 24 hours, grabbed some jacks & timbers and has already started back down. Go with him, Killa. He needs us now. When we needed him, he never failed us.

fact is early on everyone failed Chronologically...everyone except Kobe. :lol...Dwight failed miserably and so did Pau...Nash just looked lost out there...Artest couldn't keep up...so in all fairness we can't just blame those bench scrubs...our starters were shit...in hindsight Firing that fucking potato head was the worst decision ever made...dare I say the Princeton offense may have been the answer and we all knee jerked to it...

I'm not denying the loss bugs me ... but what I am discussing is the effectiveness of our coach. I have defended him to some degree (no camp, injuries etc.) but his failure to:

1. Incorporate Pau
2. Develop a solid rotation
3. His media foibles (PJ owned them)
4. And his team not improving at all on defense
5. Failure to adjust his offensive or defensive schems until we were almost dead and buried ...
6. Taking a stand on Kobe's minutes and ego

Are all things a coach can control. Imnot lamenting Kobe as much as Lamenting the hiring of two bufoons to follow Phil and that is on the Buss family + Mitch but he is steering the ship.

yes I do..because one minute is really 3 min each Q. but you miss the greater context of the argument. Last game Kobe got hurt twice leading up to the Achilles tear and not once did Pringles even think about taking him out. It's a dereliction of duty to your players in my opinion...Dantoni was trying to salvage his coaching career and reputation and the expense of Kobe...at least Potato head had the balls to sit Kobe down...again if Mike Brown is coaching this injury doesn't happen...in fact all Laker fans are to blame for this..because like blood thirsty hounds we clamored for it..when Mike Brown challenged Kobe and sat him on the bench during a game we put on out KKK sheets and took to the streets to lynch him...

I feel a sense of responsibility myself for getting Brown fired it was out complete undoing

Fully exonerated? Not on my watch ... he had a system that was not working well ...maybe it would have but cant blame Mitch for the quick hook and he was a media clown I hate coaches that are smart like the two Mikes ( D and B) but sound like bufoons in press conferences.

I agree the players have not been beat enough tbh ... Haters here blame Kobe or Dwight and Give Pau a golden pass. But these players under-achieved including the starters and even Kobe on defense at times. When the stock goes in the tank you dont blame the front line employees the CEO, CFO and EVPs get that blame and so Mike D, Kobe, Dwight, Mitch and Buss took the brunt ...but Kool is right the players need their fair share as well ...

There are a limited number of quality coaches in this league. Popovich used to be one of them, but, he lost his way and is now consumed with Quija Boards, poking dolls with pins, and all manner of machinations. He fucked around so bad that he missed his chance to play us sans Kobe, or, Utah because he was too busy running around & away. Then you have Carlisle in Texas. And the cream de la cream:::Rilstra in South Florida. That's it. 3. The remainder you can put in a burlap sack and pull one out blind. It won't matter.

He gave Pau a chance. Gasol has been drifting in the shit since Dallas kicked his ass up around his ears. He's a baby. A chickenshit, and Killa, everybody knows it, it's just that it's a union and they're sparing him, but, you can read between the lines.

We'll not improve on defense until we change out the players. We have nary a player that can stay in front of anybody. Again, Killa, everybody knows it, it's just that it's a union and they're sparing us, but, you can see it for yourself. It's embarrassing.

It's true. And we were never told why he was fired. He was bought off with the $ and sworn to secrecy. "he wasn't the right guy for the job." That was the mantra. "he was a dumb looking black man." That was the truth. Whether he could coach us or not we'll never know.

He was dumb looking but I'm not so sure he was actually dumb.... that's the unfortunate underlying typical sentiment...sometimes autistic people are the most creative in the world and now that I look back on it Mike B actually sounds like he had a plan..He actually studied the offensive and defensive sets he wanted to run..and we all just sort of thought since we had these big name players it should automatically work...well we we're ALL wrong...I think at the end of the day Mike B was probably the only right person even though he seemed dumb...it was just a complete Laker fuck up job as I've ever seen

He had a laundry list of demands. It was insane. A year-to-year contract? Fuck that. Bring his own heir apparent? Fuck that. Stay in LA for some of the road games? Fuck that. He didn't want to coach anymore, Kool. He wanted to play grab ass with the moment.

Unfortunatley Dwight ain't going nowhere. He'll use that extra $30 million to give to the IRS so he can clear the $100 million.

and then Cully we translate respect into work ethic, drive and determination...if you have Mike D and Mike B not getting the love and respect of the city..the players will play off that sentiment as well...it was a missed opportunity in my opinion.

Sure Phil is a Diva but no question...but he has credentials that only Pop can challenge...

Sounds like you don't want Dwight back in LA.

How come?

He's a patented loser on a myriad of levels. But, Milty says we can't let him walk and then use that money, so, I'd sign & trade him for the best ballast we can garner. It's a moot point though. He's staying.

Agreed. Last night, even though Dwight had a nice box score game, there was fear there. Fear of the Shit Bag as he summoned some of his historical form late there in the 4th. And even though the Lakers theoretically match up well with the Spurs, Howard isn't ready to step into the ring with the Shit Bag and throw hands. The Shit Bag don't sing and dance, and he sure don't fuckin' smile. Howard ain't ready to stare down that challenge. Not yet. And maybe not ever.

Your entire team failed. Kobe failed. So what does it matter? They suck dick with Kobe on the bench or on the court, Pringles needed to find him some rest and he failed miserably. You don't play a 35 year old in his 17th season 45mpg and routinely the entire gamePERIOD. At least Kobe may still have been around for the Lakers' inevitable sweeping at the hands of the Thunder. D'antoni is a fucking joke and is seriously one of the main reasons the Lakers suck so much ass. Accept it.

I agree with Kool :wow

Maybe he had too much of the "black thing" and it made Laker brass squirm in their Brooks Brothers.

1/2 of it. If he'd a looked like Denzel Washington, or, Poitier at prime then he would a got a fair shake. But, with the watermelon grin and the Step & Fetch it way he had it was untenable.

And he's not Phil. Phil is gone. He did not want to coach us. He quit, Killa, not once, but twice. We gave him a second chance and he quit again.

Cully great post I agree with 90% of what you wrote and I won't sully one of your most analytic posts by quibbling over 10% its beneath us, well done sir.

So then is it that "So what does it matter?" or because he played Kobe too many minutes, Lee? You get one or the other, but, you ain't gettin' both.

And they're going to bring out the Hack-a-Howard in the playoffs. There's been a gentleman's agreement out of NY. to spare us that as we wind our way down. But, that will be lifted if we get in and they'll employ it with a vengeance. We were fortunate, extremely so, miraculously so with Hack-a-Shaq not harming us. We'll not have that fortune with Howard. We'll suffer because of it. You can see it, feel it.

And it is funny, but, I'm being serious. It's America. Estatetics (sp) is everything. That chick with the big ass. Everybody wants to buy in, but, we have to see her face before we'll commit our minds, so when we stroke off this afternoon, or climb on our wife or gf, we won't think of her because there is no face to confirm the ass. We'll think of the Ellis girl, or, DUNCAN and his cords.

And he doesn't have the indomitable will like Daddy. That relentless spirit that can persist through trial and tribulation. Howard was riding high there in Aught 9, skinning and grinning, top-of-the-world, doing his Rocky 5 Tommy Morrison impression thinking he can take Stallone. But Bynum was having none of that happy horseshit and saw right through the shucking-and-jiving, and on one leg, put Howard on the fuckin' ground.

At that point, I knew. Howard ain't got what it takes. And you did too, didn't you? You knew.

There must be a lot of black guys in this board. That woman's ass is a turn off tbh. Thats too big. I like Emma Watson and Minka Kelly types btw.

Minka Kelly is gorgeous but I think Emma Watson looks like a kid, I would feel like a pedo worshiping her body type. But to each their own...plus ur a Clipper fan, no shame in being a pedo.

Yes, D'Antoni is an idiot. But it was Bryant's own ego that was his ultimate downfall. Even Kupchak admitted that nobody would ever stand up to Bryant and tell him anything. Their explanation or allowing Bryant to be a dictator/tyrant at all times is merely, "He's earned that right." I'll never understand it...inmate running the asylum.

You never forget 'em. They're closer to the fore than the ring years. I ruminate over '84 all the time. I like to wallow in it. It's harmless. Not like cancer, or ruination.

That Laker team finished 1st in the West and lost in the Finals. Of course you don't forget that team. Just like us Spurs fans won't forget finishing first in the West in 95, only to see an MVP Robinson get raped by the Dream in the Conference Finals.

This Laker team has been fighting for the 7/8 spot with an underachieving $100 star studded roster. The 2 don't even compare...

Because the stakes are non-existent. Magic had to answer in '85, or, disappear into the potter's field. Kobe answered in '10 for '08 so that it wouldn't get out of hand again. Both feats were magnificent and one can argue that in isolation they're identical.

So basically you're clinging to the hope that Kobe and Howard will answer in 2014 for the 12-13 season debacle? :corn:

No. I'm saying the stakes would have no relation to '84-'85, or, '08-'10. Howard has no heritage, and Bryant settled all family business in '10. Perhaps something in the future could rise to such a level as the aforementioned years, but, not this. This is their own birddog. There are no slings & arrows of outrageous fortune here. We did this to ourselves. Nobody "helped us." You can't take vengeance on yourself. There is no payoff.
