View Full Version : Metta World Peace: Gregg Popovich could coach old ladies

But as for this widely-held assumption that they wanted to face the ailing San Antonio Spurs, that they saw this oldie-but-goodie team as vulnerable and thus fought even harder to outlast the Houston Rockets in that overtime game on Wednesday that secured this matchup and got them out of facing top-seed Oklahoma City? That's where the boasting came to an end.
"No, no no no no no," World Peace blubbered, his head shaking and eyebrows raised. "Not when you've got (Spurs coach Gregg) Popovich – uh uh uh uh uh. He's amazing. That coach is something else. I just know he draws up plays where he could have five old ladies after they eat 14 boxes of chocolate chip cookies. He'll put them on the court, and they'll win. That's how good Popovich is."

Respect.

He had a great quote about Duncan

http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30974

“I remember one time Kevin Garnett was mushing him, and shoving him in the face; and Tim Duncan didn’t do anything, he didn’t react. He just kicked Kevin Garnett’s ass, and won the damn championship. You know what I’m sayin’? That’s gangsta. Everybody can show emotion, dunk on somebody, scream and be real cocky; but Tim Duncan is a…he’s a pimp.”

The typical backhanded compliment the Spurs often receive. Really, what people are saying is, "I can't believe they're as good as they with that roster; those guys just aren't that good".

Spurs fans are spoiled. Bonner's return comes due to injuries, Blair is on his way out, Tiago is starting, every player has gotten equal chance to earn playing time, and the team has finished top 1-2 seed the past 3 years while sticking it to Stern. Coaches have more to do with a team's success than people give them credit for and it's always seemed so stupid to me that half of ST thinks they'd manage the team better.

I just said he's the best coach in the league, tbh:lol..

He's overrated because the media and non-Spurs fans that don't follow the team closely act like his shit doesn't stink, as if he doesn't have his fair share of blunders and blemishes on his resume..

Like TD21 said, Pop's system generally receives more credit than the players do nowadays..

I'd take Pop over any coach in the league without hesitation, but he's stubborn and he has a long list of fuck-ups, just like any other coach, tbh..I'm not Paranoid Pop or Fabbs or any of those niggas that hate Pop for any decision he makes, I'm merely pointing out that he isn't the flawless coach that the media has portrayed..

LA is rumored to be considering amnestying him. He'll never be a Spur, though. I don't think his admiration of Pop is reciprocated. Pop has probably had enough of crazy alumni of the Malice in the Palace, tbh

Agree 100%. Love Pop, he is the best, but sometimes I think people forget we have 3 future hall of famers on our roster. There are a few parts that have worked together to make the Spurs such a successful organization - the players, and the personnel decisions to get those players, the coaching, managing the salary cap, and a little luck. I'm not sure how I'd weigh them in importance, but coaching wouldn't be number 1.

xtremesteven33

Pop isnt perfect and sometimes makes bad decisions. The amazing thing though is that the main core still trusts him. This is what makes him a legend. The trust and comradery he has in the locker room is the stuff of greatness.

He almost always has his team in positions to win. That is what coaching is.

It's easy :
1. Duncan
2. Pop/coaching
3. Everything else

It's not just coaching though, it's also the mentality, team spirit, discipline and general team culture that Pop brings to the table. Few other NBA coaches bring anything else to their teams other than basketball coaching.

Even after the big 3 are gone, as long as we have Pop, we will always be able to compete, maybe not contend, but guys will play hard for him. Hopefully he'd even be able to draw FAs here.

No other coach adds pieces like this and manages minutes all year long to get this team to the WCF last year! Give Pop some credit he did a hell of a job last year with a deep roster and managing minutes for Gods sakes. That team last year would not win a title with any coach, he got him them that far.
