So Tim Duncan leads the league in defensive rating, is a superior rebounder and rim protector than Marc Gasol, and he's not expected to come in the top 5?
I'm fine with Marc winning. You can make a great case for him.
- His team's defensive rating difference with him on/off the court is over 7 while Tim's is around 4.5
- He gives up a lower PER to his opponent than Duncan does (however, PER includes stuff like steals/blocks/FT% which have nothing to do with how good Tim's defense is)
- We bring up the fact that Tim anchors an elite defense, well so does Marc

Personally (and admittedly, bias is there) i'd have gone with Tim, but what bothers me is his projected placement in the voting. I'm mad that this was probably his best shot at getting DPOY and now his career with undeservingly go without one, but I'm even more upset with the overall voting results, though nobody will remember that. Now I'm starting to think he won't even make the All defensive 1st team. Center will now undoubtedly be Marc, with the forwards likely to be LeBron and Ibaka. Tim's season deserves better than that

I just hold out that Tim can have another great year next season, Also, with some of the money we are expected to free up we get some more quality, athletic, young players who help our team and Defense get better. That;s an awful lot of hope, but that's why I'm a fan tbh. I always have faith as long as Tim and Pop are around.

If Timmy wasn't in the top 5 who the hell was? Duncan's probably the most disrespected all-time great defensive player. When he was leading the league in the impact stats in the early 2000s, they opted to give the award to guys like Wallace who had the better boxscore numbers. When Tim's beasting in the boxscore stats, they instead give it to the guy who has the better impact numbers. Ridiculous bias.

Then again, this is the same NBA that gave Kobe 10+ defensive selections when he hasn't been a good defender for more than a decade now.

Dude, Duncan wouldn't even finish top 5 in his PRIME...what makes you think they're going to give it to him now. They gave a fucking DPOY to Camby despite the fact that Nuggets were a horrific defensive team when he was there. The award became a joke as soon coaches were allowed to influence the results with their campaigning BS(Carlisle is notorious for this)

Duncan being one of the best defensive players ever and never getting this award... should tell you all need to know about this award. It's an award for scrubs like Camby, Chandler, Wallace or even Bowen... who have little to no recognition outside of this and will never contend for the real award (MVP). It's a consolation prize. In other words, Duncan is too good to be of DPOY caliber. Giving it to him would almost be a slap in the face.

04-22-2013, 05:23 PM
Nothing new here. Remember when Ben Wallace beat Bruce Bowen every single year even after he was way past his prime? Duncan's old and boring. Therefore he will not be considered.

ThaBigFundamental21
04-22-2013, 05:25 PM
Camby takes a lot of heat. But IMHO he was a good defender. Honestly the Nuggets were a terrible Defensive team. Camby's award in similar to the Duncan situation. Mediocre Defensive teams with one good Defensive big. Sad part is Camby got the award on a worse Defensive team. Tim is clearly a better Defensive player than Camby as well, with the Spurs being a better Defensive team than the Nuggets. Duncan just got hosed this year. That is absolutely the only way to look at it. Even if we are being homers, Tim was the better defensive player.

The Nuggets weren't even a top ten defense the year Camby won. In fact, Denver's defense IMPROVED when he left and Nene became the defensive anchor. Spurs this year are a top ten defense. I don't see how the situations are comparable.

I remember once reading in a Zach Lowe article that KG's minutes hurt his All-Star case. Duncan's minutes hurt his MVP case.

I'm pretty sure Timmy prefers his 3 Finals MVPs to his two season MVPs.

Camby didn't even guard Tim in the playoffs that season. The Nuggets had Nene guard Tim for that whole playoff series. That is a joke for a defensive player of the year, can't even guard the other teams best big man. Fair enough if Camby was a guard, but he was supposed to be a mobile big. lol, total joke of an award. Camby wasn't even that good of a defender like you're saying he is.

Bruce or Tim should have wont he award that year hands down. This season Tim should have won the award hands down.

I actually like the Grizzlies, love that they are a defense first team, but this has kind of pissed me off.

Ice009

Tbh Ben Wallace deserved those DPOYs. Camby didn't, though.

Why did Ben Wallace deserve it? Because he sucked on offense and couldn't do anything else except rebound and play defense? Is that why he deserved it? Much better winner than Camby, but still didn't deserve that many of those awards IMO. The Pistons played solid defense 1 through 5, Spurs mainly relied on TD and Bruce.
