Marc Gasol Wins DPOY

The Memphis Grizzlies (http://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/page/MEM/memphis-grizzlies) are one of the best defensive teams in basketball. And the man in the middle of it, literally, is Marc Gasol (http://www.cbssports.com/nba/players/playerpage/1231870/marc-gasol).

According to Chris Vernon (http://twitter.com/ChrisVernonShow/status/326411915553288193), Gasol will be named the 2012-13 Defensive Player of the Year.

Gasol, in terms of traditional stats, doesn't necessarily impress. He averaged just 1.7 blocks, 1.3 a game behind league leader Serge Ibaka (http://www.cbssports.com/nba/players/playerpage/1622540/serge-ibaka). Gasol pulled in 7.8 rebounds a game, almost five a game fewer than Dwight Howard (http://www.cbssports.com/nba/players/playerpage/498287/dwight-howard), the league leader.

But Gasol's impact can be found simply in this: With him on the floor, the Grizzlies enjoyed an incredible 95.4 defensive rating. With Gasol on the floor, the Grizzlies allowed 99.3 points per 100 possessions. With him off, 105.9. His impact defensively for Memphis is pretty obvious.

Gasol anchored the league's second-best overall defense and while he wasn't swatting shots or dominating the defensive glass, his high intelligence in defending the pick-and-roll and understanding space makes him a very excellent choice.

never argued he deserved it more than Timmy. just said a case could be made, tbh. just saying its not some crazy outrage that Marc won. if you actually watched the clippers/grizz game, which I'm assuming you didn't, you'd have seen that the Clippers guards simply outclassed the Grizzlies guards, even the vaunted defensive duo of Conley and Allen. in the same thread upstairs I even said i'd have gone with Tim over Gasol. but anybody that has watched a grizzlies game would know Marc's defense is awesome, and he shines on the pick and roll. he plays it similar to how Timmy does, but with more mobility.

I'll repeat a point I made earlier, since it seemed to fly over your head. The grizzlies defensive rating difference with marc gasol on/off the court is -7.4 which is a huge number. to put it into context, the spurs difference with Timmy on/off the floor is about -4.5

no dice. i had actually been looking for a metric. i was moreso going with what i've seen watching games. his ability in that area reflects Parker's struggles against Memphis, imo. watching the games, you can see him get out there and hedge pretty high. now, its nowhere near prime rasheed or KG as far as how high up he gets, but its much more than, say, Timmy, who sort of just sags off and hopes the guard takes a mid range jumper.

while searching for a stat or metric, i found that just about every article that popped up on a simple google search praised Gasol's pick and roll defense, whatever thats worth. seeing how Memphis' defensive rating plummets with Marc out even more than the Spurs D falls with Timmy out tells me Marc is a better defender than some guys, like our friend brunodf, give him credit for. whats funny is this entire conversation started with my saying Timmy should have been DPOY, but Gasol is a deserving candidate in his own right, and brunodf has been on my nuts since i dared to call another big a good defender. spurfan raves about tim's awareness, iq, positioning etc, even though there's no metric for that.
