Was satisfying to watch. I've had my share of blasting the red Rocket for his insufficiency but we did it because we really wanted to see him to that when it mattered. Hopefully this game inhibits his self doubt for the rest of the playoffs.

Mad props for these two games, though. He is forcing those bigs out of the paint and punishing them when they don't. I have to believe it is the combination of his mid-range hook/floater and the 3 point contest this year.

Bonner is in an interesting position now that he's hitting his shots...he shouldn't ever be put in a position to singlehandedly lose a game, but he can sure aid in helping win a game. As they say, "when Bonners hitting, .... .. your fucked!"

jesterbobman
04-24-2013, 11:32 PM
He's played better in the past. But he has such a history of performing below his true ability in the playoffs that the ability to have such an impact against a team with good bigs in the playoffs means it's the most significant performance of his career.

That is the prototype Stretch big performance. Space it on O, make shots while doing all the other big man duties.

HI-FI
04-24-2013, 11:33 PM
Maybe the reason he has not performed in the postseason in the past is fatigue and this year that he has played a lot less is helping him perform better in the PO? Maybe.

that's possible. I think he realized, perhaps with his contract coming up, he really has to improve some of the grittier aspects of his game and ball his ass off. If his confidence improves in that regard, then his 3 won't be as much of an issue if it's not falling. but if they can all come together, like it has, then that is huge for us.

i've been a fan of the guy yet I can't defend some of his disappearing acts. some posters blame him for everything which is ridiculous, but that's ST for you. but I knew how hard he worked and figured he would man up eventually. Please keep it up Matty B.

I am starting to wonder if in past years with the Spurs, could Bonner have been banged up and tired considering he was a starter? I mean players see Bonner and are really physical with the guy. Perhaps him being out of the rotation for much of the season kept his legs fresh for the playoffs?

Bonner's usefulness would be even more enhanced against OKC, where he'd drag Ibaka out of the paint. Now that Barnes is playing the four, Golden State wouldn't be affect much be Bonner (although it's possible he'd get the start against them) but Denver may have trouble with a hobbled Faried trying to run him off the line.

Still not sold (the match-up is good, in that he's either being defended by lead footed Gasol, who's a C masquerading as a PF or lead footed Jamison, a notoriously bad defender), but it is encouraging that he's finally playing like he knows he belongs.

Matt Bonner never rested for even a single one of the 29 minutes that he had to contest, confront and confound Dwight Howard.

The Lakers All-Star center scored 16 points, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked four shots, but also picked up five fouls and a technical in another one of those nights (http://www.nba.com/playoffs/2013/westseries2/index.html) when he did so much head-shaking that you wondered if it might fall right off his broad and muscular shoulders.

...

But Howard also went up for an offensive rebound and swung a hard right elbow that caught Bonner square on his face and sent him to the floor like a bag of rocks.

The red-haired Bonner wore a sheepish smile and a red welt as he stood in front of his locker.

“You knock me down, I’ll keep getting up,” said Bonner.

Call it the Chumbawamba (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDkVQvhZx04) defense. Maybe that’s why none other than Kobe himself bestowed the nickname Red Mamba.
Or maybe it was the 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting — including another running one-hander — dubbed the “Shyhook” by the wags of the Internet.

“Matty’s a tough-minded individual,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. “He’s a heck of a competitor and a great team guy. He’ll do whatever we ask him to do. I think his family worries about him and the things we ask him to do out there.”
Some of those things are the kind that could have future generations of Bonner’s family watching video of him getting abused by the likes of Howard.

“He’s really strong, really good, can jump really high,” Bonner said. “I’m just doing my best trying not to make the top 10 by getting dunked on.”

What he’s doing is whatever he can — grabbing Howard by both shoulders from behind to try to stop him from scoring, giving him a little shove in the lower back to throw him off balance, slapping at his wrists, tugging on his jersey or just stepping into his path to let him know that he’s always there.

When Howard was asked if Bonner got under his skin, he replied tersely: “No, he didn’t.”
But here he was barking at Bonner as he came off the bench out of a timeout and there he was flapping his arms and complaining to a referee when the Red Mamba’s nettling defense resulted in another offensive foul.

“I’m not out there trying to frustrate anybody,” Bonner said. “If it got chippy, I didn’t notice.”

HI-FI
04-25-2013, 01:49 AM
crofl at you guys saying it's a bandwagon. it's more about giving Bonner some props after all the shit he takes on here.

He may not be able to sustain this, but I'm hoping he can. Most important thing is he's proving to fans and himself he can step it up in the playoffs. We may not have won that game 1 without him stepping up. If we had lost, especially game 1, we'd be in a bad place right now. So it's more about given respect where it's due.

Still not sold on Bonner, he has A LOT to make up for. Im still expecting him to choke. As the saying goes, the sun shines even on a dogs asshole once in a while. He has a long way to go to prove himself to me. 2 games in the first round are not enough.

When he is clutch throughout our playoff birth (win or lose), then he might be redeemed in my eyes. Until then, its put up or shut up for him.

I can't believe there are still people shitting on Bonner in this thread. Pay the guy his dues: he's facing one of the toughest frontcourt in the league (only the Grizz could be considered as better, and even then I'm not sure), playing 29 quality minutes, getting in the head of the guy labeled as "the best center in the NBA", hitting his shots, hustling on D... and still some people find a way to drag the past into this.

Let's be honest for a minute: Bonner is the kind of guy everybody likes. In the end he's a really tall guy who can shoot 3s better than pretty much anybody else in the NBA, who happens to play for one of the best franchises ever and still behaves like any John Doe you might run into on the streets of SA. He's so laid back and unassuming, from the sandwich blog to the Coach B videos, one would have to be a real douchebag not to wish him well.

I have no idea what got into him this year: maybe the reduced PT, as some have pointed out; maybe extra confidence from the 3pt-shooting contest or being dubbed the Red Mamba by Kobe (how ironic would that be?). In a way, I don't care. I'm just going to sit back, kick off the shoes, and enjoy the show--especially when the show is watching Fakers being shit on by a fan favorite.

Matt Bonner's past foibles in the playoffs unmade his otherwise likeable persona, his quirky unique play (as a stretch PF) and his reliable role player in the regular season gig. He has made up thus far in the playoffs by beating the stereotype about his post season play and one only hopes that he continues to do well. I think he is one of the best below-par-par guys in the NBA. If he continues to do well in the playoffs, the Spurs' jettisoning Blair will ensure that their frontcourt will still be reliable next season.

I agree. Especially guarding DH, his job is just to foul him if he goes up for the shot. Got to give him props for the last 2 games. It doesn't erase the past playoff failures, but maybe that 3pt shooting contest with all that pressure and being in the spotlight did something for him. I'll eat crow for the past 2 games and hope it continues, but I won't hold my breath.

We tried it last year and it didn't work.

The lakers are in a bad way to defend against Bonner right now, Gasol is to slow to really stickwith/close out especially if bonner is doing the usually spurs motion offense and changing sides of the floor. Howard is guarding Duncan because Duncan abuses Gasol. The corpse formerly known as Ron Artest is busy with Leonard. This means the Lakers have no one to adequately guard Bonner on the floor most of the time. Bonner is fairly effective guarding Gasol, and isn't all that small to guard Howard even if he's mainly fronting for ball denial and then fouling. Its sort of a Dream series for Bonner. The important thing is that anyone 6'5" staying with him or closing out hard can cause him problems, historically. I love that he's getting this moment in the sun because he's a good regular season player and seems like a good guy who has a great life. I also hope I'm wrong and its a product of the new imrpoved bonner and not match-ups.

It didn't work because Bonner didn't play well. If he does play well, it will work. When Bonner's clicking he's the most helpful role-player the Spurs have. He doesn't win the plus-minus trophy every regular season by accident.

When Bonner is clicking it works beautifully... There was a game two seasons ago (albeit during the regular season) in which Bonner lit up OKC with 7 three pointers in Oklahoma City no less... The Spurs won handedly...

Stop complaining and appreciate. Bonner has given us more than we expected hell if he goes back to his choking form then we're back to square one.

Totally agreed! Just go with the fucking flow already, clowns. smh

The Red Mamba looked dangerous out there! Loved it!!

For the past seven seasons, I like a lot of other Sours fans I assume, have wanted to like Bonner. Really. I mean he's a funny guy. But the comedy, funny guy schtik hasn't caught on well because he's been a ginger with no nuts in the playoffs. Barely a cut above Scalabrine. Doesn't cut it on a team that's had the Horry's, Jackson's and Kerr's. But now that he's had two playoff games you find yourself wanting to root for him.

For me it's all gonna be about what happens going forward. All the Spurs have done is hold serve in the first round and getting their rhythm back against a shitty Lakers team. It's going to be about what he does in the next few rounds and hopefully the finals. Good first two games, Matty. Props after seven seasons. But let's see if you can make Scalabrine envious.

Bonner always had the ability, just never the nutsack for it in the playoffs. Maybe Jax left his nutsack in the locker tbh

Meh, GS really is the worst possible matchup for him. Not saying he'll bounce back against Memphis, but his showing up against the Lakers with Diaw sidelined was huge. Can't take that away from him.

He's utter and complete shit this series, but it doesn't change what he did against the Lakers. You're fucking retarded if you don't see that.

:lol that's not the point faggot. He's shitting the bed like usual and one series against a crippled team does not make for seven years of complete and utter failure. But yeah, I can't see beyond his one good series. Fuck off dumbass :lmao

Can't take that away from him.If everything goes according to plan, I think Bonner is absolutely crucial against Memphis and think he will do well. Of course Bonner isnt playing in this series, they need perimeter defense. Bonner's defensive strength is in the paint.

That's exactly the point, faggot-who-can't-read. The thread title says "The Best Game of Matt Bonner's Career." That means he's going to go back to sucking afterward. Nobody is saying he wouldn't shit the bed, they gave him credit for playing well in one game.

Again, you're fucking retarded.

LOL at Bonner frustrates Z-BO
go back and watch the final minutes of game 6 after Mcdyess hit the midrange shot to put us up by 2 points
if you dont wanna watch i can save you the trouble
it was Matt getting abused for 3 straight minutes everytime down the court by Randolph

Splitter is the one who troubles Randolph
he had a double double in his first playoff game vs Randolph and hes held him to some pretty bad FG% numbers
he also rebounds well vs Memphis

As worn down as they look and as little rest as they'll get going into and throughout the WCF, the encouraging thing going in, is that Duncan and especially Splitter, are due for progression to the mean. It couldn't come at a better time, considering who they'll be playing.

Let's hope Pop doesn't try to get cute and force Bonner into the rotation (given the lack of rest and his tendency to baby Splitter and Diaw, he probably will though). There's no reason Splitter and Diaw can't handle close to 60 combined mpg in this series . . . and if they can't, then they're screwed anyway.
