Dont hate.

I've been an avid console player for over 20 years. From the NES, to Genesis, SNES, you name it. These days the graphics are the only thing that will keep my attention span for long enough to enjoy something, and the console just doesn't cut it anymore. You spend big money on TV's, and the consoles can't take advantage of it. Wait until 4K res becomes the norm, the new consoles will show their age pretty quickly in their lifespan.

Combined w/ bullshit money making tactics (subscription fees, DLC, higher game costs, lack of sales, etc.) PC is a win/win. I've saved hundreds from using Steam. The only thing I miss about consoles is the community, PC simply can't compete there.

I'm a console gamer and don't even own a Windows box (Linux is easier to use IMO), but no way I'm forking over $400 for what is essentially a neutered PC in the next gen. Buying current gen consoles made a lot of sense in 2006 back when they had hardware that killed PCs at absolute bargain basement prices. Even more importantly, current gen consoles used processors vastly different from the x86 CPUs in PCs so that ports to PC would often be shitty (for instance, the NBA2k games suck on PC in comparison to X360/PS3). Hence, the console is the way better buy in the current gen. That's all changed with the next generation now that the consoles are using x86 CPUs. I mean they're just going to be PCs now, so the ports to PC should be solid.

Yeah, this is another reason to ditch the consoles in the next gen. Now that NBA2k will be developed for only one architecture, getting the PC version will be badass to download better jersey textures (they look horrible on the game), faces, new arenas, more teams, etc. I made tons of patches back in the day for the Live series when it was good and I hated not being able to do that when moving to console.

I really can't tell any difference as long as framerate is above 30FPS. The resolution would be awesome though. Are the next gen consoles bound by 1080p?

Have you consistently gamed at 60 fps? I never really noticed how bad the fps were on the 360 until I got used to 60 or more.

From what I've read the new consoles are geared for 1080p as the primary resolution. I'm sure they will be able to run at higher resolutions as they become more popular w/ consumers, but you are gonna take a HUGE performance hit and be unable to upgrade. Not to mention Anti Aliasing will not be possible at that res either..this will really hurt those with bigger TV's..

Yes, the possibilities are endless with mods. I've seen some of the mods for 2k13, they are fucking nice! I'm hoping with the switch to x86, the Madden franchise is resurrected on the PC..I could imagine the amount of quality mods for a game as big as Madden..hell, look at what I was able to do to Skyrim..

Shit, I bought Max Payne 3 for 15 bucks during the Steam Christmas sale, that shit was 60 bucks until just recently..I got GTA IV Complete for fucking EIGHT dollars, that shit is STILL 30 on console.

Want to know who has a problem with DRM? Pirates. I buy my games. I've paid for an internet connection for the past 5 years, don't think thats gonna change soon, especially if Google Fiber comes here as well.

I wish the consoles would just stick with gaming and be designed as such, but no, a console isn't about gaming anymore; it's about streaming Netflix and HBO Plus, it's about Facebook and watching youtube. 100% agreement from me actually. Makes you wonder why Sony and Microsoft went down this route in going into the PC architecture. Obviously to save money on R&D and development costs. But yeah, this is going to be the first console launch since I can remember that the PC will be the better purchase when it comes to raw power. Consoles usually had a leg up for two years or so but now PCs will be the big man on campus. But everyone in this thread is more or less a technophile and understands these things.

Sony and Microsoft probably throwing in the towel when the next-gen after this, console gaming will be in cloud servers. :lol Or maybe they understand that we're reaching a diminishing returns when it comes to graphics and also realize that there's no point in investing so much money into research. We're past the point of the first 3D games, an anti-aliasing. Sure games can look less-jagged but the average joe probably doesn't notice or care.

OH wow that TV is relatively pretty cheap. I was under the impression those things still cost an arm and a leg. But in order for 4K to become big, they need people to get new Blu Ray players and new TVs and I doubt the public is ready for that. We probably are but not the average person. And we need a faster internet structure for Netflix to stream that since the average 4K movie is about 100 GB. It feels like it was recently that the public were told to get Blu Ray players and upgrade to HD TVs.

I agree with PC games being cheaper. That's actually a really great thing for PCs.

As for EA, what the hell do you expect from them? It's not fair to use EA as an example, they fuck up everything they get their hands on it seems. No wonder why they repeated as the Worst Company in America. I read about the amount of complaints online about SimCity, and giving out free games to kiss pissed customer's asses, but still don't understand their beef to begin with. I've literally never had any issue with DRM. Yeah, I thought it would be cool to play Diablo III offline, but MP is where it's at anyways.

I'm prepared for EA to place the final nail in Battlefield's coffin later this year. I've seen the light and started to play Arma III, which is a multiplayer FPS fan's dream.

I was a hardcore pc gamer for about 10 years, 97-07 or so. I played on teams in CPL, ETG ladders, for quake 1/2/3. None of the games out there compare to the multiplayer/community experience I had then so I don't bother to spend my time and money on them anymore. The last game I enjoyed was Team Fortress 2 until they made it stupid with all the hat and weapon crafting nonsense. Free to play and micro transition bullshit had little to nothing to do with it.

Games being made primarily for one company, and purposely being coded to run like shit on the other. I read that executives from the major publishers/developers "frown upon" this type of a practice as they are committed to the gamers first and foremost, but it's about the bottom line at the end of the day and they would never admit to this shit anyway.

Nope. Not at all. I play my Steam games on or offline. I purchase my shit, and like I mentioned previously, will not be without an internet connection anytime soon. Always on consoles might be the real inconvenience if the rumors prove true.

Also, this next bit from Joystiq is a drag...."Microsoft's minty-fresh Xbox One will be unable to play Xbox 360 discs, nor will your multitude of Xbox Live Arcade purchases transfer to the new machine." I would have rethought some of my Xbox Live purchases if I had known they would not transfer over to the next iteration of Xbox Live.

On measures to combat used game sales, Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.

That's incredibly shitty. I'll most likely bounce back to the Playstation brand if they have any exclusives worth playing - if not, I'll stick to PC.

Wasn't impressed at all.

The backwards compatibility thing is understandable... but the xbla games not transferring is annoying.

I bought the 360 over the ps3 for 3 reasons: 1) It came out first and I already had a decent lineup of games when the ps3 came out so there was really no need for another console

2) My hands get extremely uncomfortable with the dualshocks and they feel like little toys to me. the 360's controller is pretty much ideal for me and I even use a wired one for my PC. I loved the fatties that the original xbox had. Fit my hand like a glove.

3) I had like 5 or 6 years of Live built up after getting subscription cards for birthdays and xmas' when I had the original xbox.

I won't be renewing my gold account and will most likely sit next gen out unless there's a string of games that come out that won't be heading to PC. I'd consider my computer an upper middle class gaming rig (crossfired 7870's with a fx-6300) and have no problem sticking with it for the next few years.

Microsoft is too caught up with being an all in one entertainment system and I think the system design will take a backseat to that. But just look at Steam. remember when Half-life 2 came out a lot of people couldn't even play the game the first weekend because Steam was down. All the while I was playing my hacked copy. It didn't make sense why somebody had to log onto the internet to play a single player game they purchased in a store.

-Microsoft is paying third parties to not mention PS4 versions of titles. If a game is not explicitly said to be Xbox One exclusive, it isn't.

I dont think they gave it all back but I would think a large portion. The original xbox had no almost no brand loyalty, given the short life of the first one. The year head start and the lower price is what gave it its big push into the lead console, Sony's arrogance helped as well, this time there is no year head start, and no price advantage, but there is a brand loyalty and its hard to predict exactly( brand loyalty is a major reason why Apple is so valueable) how it will effect the sales, gamerscores and purchases like videos and movies and the whole LIVE ecosystem that many gamers are embedded in might help a little, the PS2 had none of those, that is why it was easier to get those gamers to buy into the 360. This time around i think Sony learned front its mistake, they took less of a risk on alot of things; from the hardware, no proprietary cell structure , PC based developer friendly all the way to price point. Only time will tell if Microsoft is as arrogant as Sony was. I can see them slowly going away from the DRM thing, first mention it is up to the publisher 200000 times, they slowly move form that to changing terms and saying they are now forcing publishers to not enforce the DRM checks, I could also see a 50 dollar price drop quickly within a year. I could also see them being stubborn about it, these are the same people that made the Zune. Time will tell. For me the only deciding factor on all my console purchases was the controller, i am in the minority but i prefer the Sony controller's layout with the stick on the same horizontal plane. I will be in line for the PS4... the day the price drops to 299. (hopefully in 2 years time) until then, i have a ps3 and a 650m nvidia card that does OK on high settings. plus i dont game as much as i used to. p.s. typing on a tablet is hard

Back then the Blue Ray disc was a high selling point and more people were ok with spending that much money for it.

At the time Blue Ray disc players were like 300 something dollars. So at the time of purchased you felt as if 500 was justified enough.

I didn't get my PS3 till it dropped to 400 so I didn't get raped with the 600 dollar price tag. lol

meh got mine for 115 and used it for a total of two hours to play a game. My sister uses it to watch netflix now. Got a blu ray player for 40 bucks, so i have no use for it

I never owned a PS3... I only bought an XBox 360 when they dropped to $250 (Arcade model). That's about my price point for a console. Don't really mind waiting a year or two until prices drop considerably, tbh...

As Shadow said, back when the PS3 came out there was the bluray novelty, but neither of these consoles offer anything like that.

But the HDDVD drive was an add-on for the Xbox, whereas on the PS3 it was built-in (thus part of the price). I actually think that decision right there basically won the format war in the long run, tbh

Any further details on how much that fee would be on "reactivating" used games? Because that sounds like the bite in the ass that's going to keep on biting them. The 360 did so well in the US that I think their initial sales for the new console will look alright thanks to enough built up brand loyalty. I just don't see how any gamer who is going to wait a year or two for a price drop is going to pick an Xbox One over a PS4 when half the reason the reason for waiting is that by the time you buy in there's a decent catalogue of games that can be had for cheap.

what a mess. i think MS has eclipsed sony in 2006 for arrogance and taking their customers for granted. This console actually had promise if it weren't for the always online and other bullshit it comes with. its like they tried to make it as consumer unfriendly as possible. i do think the unlimited sharing of your library with up to 10 "family members" has promise though. Apparently you can share your games as much as you want with people in your "family". Which could basically be up to 10 of your friends I suppose. im sticking to my pc tbh.

Ive never owned a PS console because those controllers are made for children and anybody over 6 feet or with big hands is going to find them uncomfortable. those x-one controllers on the other hand look comfy as fuck and ill probably pick one up for my pc. i think i read an article somewhere that sales for the controller are outpacing the sales of the system and MS might increase the price of the controller to compensate.

Independent US-based military magazine Navy Times has published a new report blasting the Xbox One and its various policies that the publication describes as problematic for those on active duty.

The Xbox One will require users to connect to the internet once every 24 hours, something that Navy Lt Scott Metcalf believes will be a "showstopper" for those serving downrange, in the field or at sea.

A past report claimed that Microsoft was working on a solution for those in internet-free scenarios, though the company now says no such plan is in place.

In addition, the Xbox One will be supported in only 21 countries. Those stationed in major military regions like Germany, Italy or Great Britain will not have a problem. However, service members in Japan, Kuwait, Afghanistan or other areas are in a bind.

On top of this, since Xbox One games are region locked, service members who import games won't be able to play them on their local machines. And, as Navy Times pointed out, those who buy games locally will be out of luck, as Xbox Live accounts are tied to regions.

The publication also called out potential "serious" security concerns for the Xbox One, involving the system's Kinect camera and/or microphone recording conversations not meant to be heard outside of the military. Microsoft has said that the Xbox One does not record idle living room chatter.

"Microsoft has single-handedly alienated the entire military," naval aviator Jay Johnson wrote in a Gamasutra piece. "And not just the US military — the militaries of the entire world."

Johnson added that the Xbox One's internet requirement is "the single greatest sin Microsoft has committed against all service members".
