I don't agree with all this "coming out" thing, why should he have to "come out", as if there's something different about him.
Makes no sense.

Your're missing the point here, it isn't solely about an individual. It is a social statement about tolerance. I support it.

But in general then. Why can't someone just say "I'm gay" followed by "oh ok then" from the media. Why does there have to be a barrage of news articles about it for weeks. Seems a bit hypocritical by the media, saying there's nothing wrong with being gay and that you shouldn't make a big thing out of it, yet proceed to do so themselves.

Eh, just my opinion.

In some future society where gay and straight are actually viewed as the equals that they are, this will be reality.

Are gay and straight equal?

Are gay and straight equal?

Legally, or in actuality?

Are gay and straight equal?

From a human standpoint, they are, for sure. They should have the same rights (unless one of this groups needs additional rights to guaranty those basic ones are covered due to difficulties it may face in a hostile society), they should be treated, judged and respected the same way (human standpoint, remember), regardless of their sexual choices and they should have the same opportunities to fulfill their objectives in life.

I'm not going to talk about the midia, which is a rather complicated subject. But, in general, it isn't hypocritic to make this condition public and ask for it to be treated as a normal condition. Because , simply, it isn't treated like that right now, there's a lot of homophobia, attacks on gay people, discrimination, and so on. So, if, at some point in the future our societies actually regard sexual choices as personal, private thing, then I will agree with you, it would make no sense to be "coming out" with a public statement, or it would make pretty much the same sense as if I, for instance, make a thread stating "Hey, I wanted all you to know I'm straight"...
