View Full Version : Lakers: Kobe (Plaintiff) v. Pamela Bryant (Defendent)

Yep, you guessed it. Kobe is suing his own mother. Damn. Talk about a killer instinct:

WEST BERLIN, N.J. -- A South Jersey sports-collectibles firm is at the center of a family fight between basketball star Kobe Bryant and his mother.

Goldin Auctions of West Berlin wants to sell more than 100 items from the Los Angeles Lakers' pro career and his days as a high school player in suburban Philadelphia. The keepsakes — including uniforms, rings and trophies — would be offered on consignment for Pamela Bryant, the athlete's mother.

But Kobe Bryant is trying to block the planned June auction, insisting he owns the memorabilia. The dispute moved to a federal court in Camden Thursday, when an attorney for the auction house requested a court order to allow the sale.

The filing noted Goldin Auctions already has paid a $450,000 advance to Pamela Bryant, who wanted to buy a new home in Nevada.

If a judge approves the sale, bidders could compete for shorts, jerseys, jackets and varsity letters that Bryant wore at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa. They could vie for NBA All-Star and Championship rings, a 1996 Gatorade National Player award and a 1992 Sonny Hill League Future Stars Champion Trophy.

The lineup also would include a team jersey from Bryant's childhood in Italy, which is described as "the earliest known Kobe Bryant game-worn jersey ever offered at auction." Bryant lived in Italy when his father, Joe, a former Philadelphia 76er, played professional basketball there.

Pamela Bryant contends the collectibles have been in her possession for at least 15 years, a court filing says. It adds she stored the items in West Berlin over the past five years at a cost of $1,500 per month.

According to the filing, Pamela Bryant "indicated her son gave these items to her, stating 'Here Mom, these are for you.' "

The athlete's attorney sees it differently.

"Mr. Bryant's personal property has ended up in the possession of someone who does not lawfully own it," asserted Mark Campbell of Loeb & Loeb in Los Angeles.

Goldin's attorney, Jeffrey Cohen of Cherry Hill, N.J., could not be reached.

there's no need to spin it...Kobe has been at odds with his mom in particular (not his dad but his mom) for awhile now....She never got over him growing up and then marrying Vanessa...Vanessa was the original source of all the hostility...same thing with MJ...if I recall correctly he and his mom didn't speak for awhile...he was close to his pops... now think MJ and his moms they're back on terms..

I have more to say about this later

Women, in general, are the downfall of men. This has been proven over the course of history.

Kobe Bryant should be the modern-day poster boy of this adage.

He already did..and he got his dad the LA Sparks head coaching gig...back in the day...I remember when Colorado happened...and his dad still upset with his decision to marry Vanessa with no pre-nup gave an interview where he said.."I may not be happy with my sons decisions but this is serious and I'm flying to Colorado to make sure my baby is ok." His dad called him his baby...but I don't think his mother showed at least not that I heard of...I think she has dominant personality issues just like he does and that's why they don't get along at all...

Do I actually feel sorry for this guy and the way he is now? I mean, when you can be that badass and your bitch of a mom still resents you and treats you like shit, and you're obviously still trying to make her part of your life. Kinda sucks. My man can't even get a hug from his momma!

From the story, it's not like Kobe is suing her for money. He's just suing her to stop her from selling his stuff. If he also sues for damages, then that's pretty weak. But he just doesn't want his shit sold for her profit. And I agree with whoever said if she worked on being a good mother, maybe she'd have a better relationship with him and he'd buy her a new house in Nevada himself without her having to do it this way. Or how about make your own money? Moreover, if she asked his permission first and the proceeds go to some charity, I would guess he'd have less of a problem with it. Seems like he doesn't want her to make money to benefit just her off of his stuff.

Yeah. I'm with Kobe on this one. I mean me and my mother have a good relationship. Even now, I remember my mom calling me and was doing her spring cleaning and she found a huge stack of Sports Illustrated and Slam mags from 5 yrs ago. I told her not to throw it away and ill handle it when i come for a visit and she did that. Kobe's a grown ass man. This is not a case of her throwing or giving away unwanted stuff. Kobe's mom probably has 3 houses already and wants another one for show all at the expense of her already fragile relationship with her son.

His legacy is safe. We all saw why the Lakers had a bad season and are now fishing early as a result. Kobe played spectacularly (individually). He then got seriously injured. No way his team getting swept in the first round is held against him unless he actually played in the playoffs. He didn't.

Not sure where you get the idea that Kobe's legacy took a hit this year. You could argue that Howard's legacy took a hit but not Kobe's.

What were they're individual numbers? I clearly said Kobe played spectacularly (individually). You are not accounting for other obvious reasons why the Lakers underachieved. His ppg and FG% are on par with those of his last two title seasons. His assist numbers equals the best he's had in any year he's played - including his days playing with Shaq. But I get it. Kobe is an easy target around these parts. Carry on son. :tu

Truth bomb. And given the fact that Kobe put up around the same PPG, RPG, and saw a slight uptick on his APG this year (when compared to the 5 - count 'em - 5 times, how can you come to the conclusion that he was a detriment to his team? Maybe his teammates - this year - didn't live up to their end of the deal - like they did in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2010?

And when he doesn't assist, he's a ballhog. When he does, he's a stat padder. Keep moving that goal post son. :lol

Why do you keep posting individual stats? We all agree he stat padded to hell and back.

Was all the stat-padding conductive to even make the playoffs? No (the team without him actually had to pull that off).
Did it help the team meet expectations? No.
Did the team underachieved greatly considering the talent? Yes.
Was he the self-proclaimed leader of probably the most disappointing Lakers team in history? Yes.

Of course his legacy will take a hit.

And stop pining on teammates. He received two likely future HoF (Nash, Howard), in addition to the likely HoF he already had (Gasol). Blake and Jamison had career-best seasons.

Dude had that 'roaming' defense all season long, allowing scrubs like Ariza to look like they were Lebron. He was a turnover machine. It isn't just me saying this, you were saying the same thing as it happened.

Was all the stat-padding conductive to even make the playoffs? No (the team without him actually had to pull that off). No "we" don't. Just Laker haters like yourself. Him taking it upon himself to get guys like Howard going, is now boiled down to stat padding. Got it.

The team without him barely won two home games to sneak into the 2nd season. How'd that team without him do? Did their defense improve in the playoffs? How about their offense? :lol

Did it help the team meet expectations? No.Actually it did. After all of the injuries, lack of chemistry, etc. turned our season into a trainwreck, the Finals expectations changed to merely making the playoffs (embarrassing tbh). Kobe's efforts most certainly helped get them there. To say otherwise is being disingenuous at best.

Did the team underachieved greatly considering the talent? Yes. I agree with you here, but I'm also a realist. There were several reasons why they underachieved. These reasons are obvious so I won't delve into the details.

Was he the self-proclaimed leader of probably the most disappointing Lakers team in history? Yes.You're funny. Is TD self-proclaimed too? They have basically the same amount of tenure (-1 rang)...It's funny because millions of people want to see the Lakers win (& vice versa). The Lakers are polarizing like that. So of course if they don't win, it's disappointing. I mean look at how many times they played in the Finals (http://www.nba.com/lakers/history/year_by_year.html) to put it into context.

Of course his legacy will take a hit.Did 8 cause TD's legacy to come into question? Don't answer that without your miranda rights. :lol

And stop pining on teammates. He received two likely future HoF (Nash, Howard), in addition to the likely HoF he already had (Gasol). Blake and Jamison had career-best seasons.Although i didn't want to admit it at the time, it applies here. Your boy mid (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204820) destroyed this argument. We had a 72-year old starting backcourt (neither made it through the season healthy btw). Our starting center just came off major back surgery. We just fired Mike Clown and hired Mike _antoni. The beat goes on and on. His teammates didn't performPERIOD. When he went down, they were exposed by the Spurs. So much so, that Pop called it an unfair fight (paraphrasing here).

Dude had that 'roaming' defense all season long, allowing scrubs like Ariza to look like they were Lebron. He was a turnover machine. It isn't just me saying this, you were saying the same thing as it happened.I criticize Kobe just as much as the next guy. If his play is killing he team's chances at a W, you best believe I'll voice my displeasure. However, I never fault his efforts. He leaves it all on the floor. You might not like him, but you have to respect a player like that.

The team without him did as well as it would've done with him. 42-36 when he played wasn't a fluke. Instead of 30 point beatings it probably would've been 25 point beatings. He played 79 games and that team was still a disaster, WITH him.

Actually it did. After all of the injuries, lack of chemistry, etc. turned our season into a trainwreck, the Finals expectations changed to merely making the playoffs (embarrassing tbh). Kobe's efforts most certainly helped get them there. To say otherwise is being disingenuous at best.

:lmao I'm calling bullshit on this. This is the team that was going to challenge OKC in the West, according to LkrFan before game 1 of the season. This team with Kobe playing 79 games and nearly 40 minutes per game (or more), was a disgrace.

His teammates played as hard as they could, and as I said, the talent was there. I'm not going to deny that having that clown D'Antoni isn't a major issue, especially since he doesn't have the guts to call Kirby out when he's being cancerous (and there's been many times of that this season). But that actually adds to the argument: Kobe ran that team to a pathetic 42-36 record. Fact.

I criticize Kobe just as much as the next guy. If his play is killing he team's chances at a W, you best believe I'll voice my displeasure. However, I never fault his efforts. He leaves it all on the floor. You might not like him, but you have to respect a player like that.

I'm not arguing effort. Legacy is never measured in effort. Nobody remembers "he played hard".

Sure, it did.
All the Achilles is a warrior talk...
Achilles is carrying them to the playoffs ...
playing 48 mins. ...
that shit hurt his legacy :lmao :wakeup

The warrior shit is for Kobe knobslobbers. He played 78 games as a :cry warrior :cry and had a 42-36 record to show for it. Even Allen Iverson would be ashamed of that shit.

Blazers coach Terry Stotts, nearly speechless, simply took his hat off: “He was on a mission. … What can you say about a 47-point performance?”

Hornets coach Monty Williams said, "You could put Saran Wrap on Kobe and I don't know if that's going to change anything."

Spur fans dont change Achilles legacy, his peers and the coaches and media does ...
LOL yall still on his dick and he is out for months

Here's another quote from Green after nailing the game winner over Kobe:

"He just couldn't find the man [Bryant] who was guarding me because [Bryant] was kind of roaming a little bit." :lmao

Where are the quotes from the Wizards coach? "Thankfully Mike decided to put Kobe on Ariza, that was the edge we needed to win at Staples" crofl

And FWIW, I didn't start this conversation....

"I got a question earlier about whose team this is," Bryant told reporters at the Lakers media day Monday. "I don't want to get into the, 'Well, we share ...' No, it's my team. But I want to make sure that Dwight, when I retire, this is going to be his. I want to teach him everything I possibly know so that when I step away this organization can ride on as if I never left."

Oh I dont think he should get credit for this season you are right it was a disapointment ...just disagree it hurts his legacy. by avoiding the playoff flameout the last image is of him waling to the line with the torn achilles in fact NBa.com picked it as one of the top 10 plays ...

All im saying is most folks see him as irrelevant Lakers shitty season still a story but most fans, media have not blamed Achilles outside of a few advanced nerds that rightfully shit on his defense and haters

He should get the negative 'credit' that comes from leading a talented team to a shitty record. And the rest of us that don't consume the shit that employs Israel Gutierrez will remember that.

The NBA lovefest with Kobe is a disgrace, and there's no better example than getting a foul called when he tore his Achilles all on his own :lmao

Nope.. this season will leave a mark. Especially since Dr Buss passed away and Jim took over, and this major turd got started. This Laker team set a few new lows when it comes to negative records. And I'm hoping both D'Antoni and Howard stay, since it would be just the beginning of some serious comedy gold, tbh :lol

What does Achiles have to do with us getting swept?
Oh wait I get this ... I forget you only been on top for a short while ...less than adecade. Let me peep you up on game.
When you are clearly the better team you dont even waste time spitting on your opponent. A sweep should of been expected and nothing to celebrate.
You move on to bigger and better things ...but since you know your team has no legit shot ..you want to bask in the glory of the sweep or bash Achilles.

Kobe is an egotistical stat whore, thats a fact tbh. He doesnt know how to play a balanced game for prolonged periods, hes either going to shoot 20-25 times or get double digit assists...no in between. If the faggot let his assists and shots come within the flow of their offense instead of forcing everything and trying to be a hero maybe he would have an achilles right now. LeBron doesnt get his points or assists because he feels the need to will his team to a victory or because he has to take it upon himself to get Wade/Bosh involved...he gets his numbers effortlessly and within the flow of the game and unsurprisingly team success follows that.

You'd like it if he had nothing to do with the state of that team when they lose, as long as you can carry his torch when they win, wouldn't ya?

When you are clearly the better team you dont even waste time spitting on your opponent. A sweep should of been expected and nothing to celebrate.

Unless the Lakers did it, then you'd start a few threads about it. You play it off though when you get your ass handed to you even though your team spent 120 million for that stacked roster. Now you act like "meh, you beat the Wizards". Convenient but you're not getting out of it that easy. You're going to have to wear that scarlet letter for quite some time.

Jealousy it what it is. :lmao

Killa is a Kobe fanboy tbh. He tries to hide it and seem somewhat objective but he aint fooling anyone. I always crack up when he says something obvious (i.e. MJ is better than Kobe) but always has to precede it with long ass paragraphs talking about how great Kobe is. Or if its something like Kobe is chucking, hell write a long ass paragraph with excuses of why Kobe might be doing it prior to saying he does indeed need to stop the chucking. Either that or hell switch it up and say something bad for most of his post and end it with something good. :lol

The bottom line is the Lakers got swept in the 1st round of the playoffs by the Spurs. As tired and old and shitty as the Spurs are, they swept a 120 million dollar squad. Injuries be damned, the Lakers struggled to get to the playoffs and Kobe isn't relived of that shitty performance just because he missed 3 games.
