I just switched from PACman to DeviantOne ROM

DeviantOne is basically based on SlimRom (and it has basically the same settings menu), with a little bit of Rootbox, Liquidsmooth, CM, Paranoid, Bakedblackbean, AOKP, codefirex

Nice. I'm on actual CM 10.1 now (made by cyanogenmod himself) for the Canadian variant of the S4. The AT&T version has a locked bootloader by the carrier :lol

Slimrom is nice but still with some bugs. The DPI is also too high and the items on screen are too small. I can't wait for rootbox etc to come to S4

Yeah I hope you will get a ROM similar to DeviantOne; DPI is perfect for me, and as I said, based on Slim and has some Rootbox too
So far, no bug for me :D
(and the rom comes with some really badass wallpapers too)

And yeah I heard about the locked bootloader for the ATT, lol

Apparently the Motorola X Phone should be announced - I'm not sure if it'll fall under the Nexus line (since they just released it in November). But it should be near stock Android.

CM has a large following because it's the AOSP ROM available on the widest range of devices. There are other AOSP ROMs around, but that advantage of availability is the biggest reason.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/16/samsung-gs4-storage-complaints-response/?utm_medium=feed&utm_source=feedly

Yup. It's actually the exact same with rooting. With Touchwiz, it was 9.72 GB available with less that 7 GB free. The issue is Samsung (for whatever reason) partitioned off the 5+ gigs as reserved system pace. So regardless if you wipe and install CM 10.1m it's still at 9.72GB (but like 8 GB free).

Now I still have my 32 GB card from my S2 so it doesn't affect me much (if I can fucking find it), but I haven't found a logical explanation why so much of the internal space is untouchable. I'll have to go with Samsung are fucking morons until I find evidence of the contrary. Looks like they're pulling a Microsoft Surface.

resistanze
05-16-2013, 08:34 AM
Also i anticipate they'll reduce the reserved space allocation in a future update, as the backlash has already started.

Yeah I found PA roms a little bloated on my S2, but didn't hate PA.

For instance on this ROM, I've had 1.6 GB of my ram being used at some times. Not sure why tbh, CM took up 0.9 GB max.

I had Viper for the X+, although that one had shitty development (like every ROM for the device).

But on the One S, Viper is more complete and stable (because the devs have been working on it longer, and also more devs like 20 of them)

I dont give a f... about 4.3 tbh and shitty useless Halo

In on 4.1.1 and Im pretty happy because of all the features, battery life and performance

Im sure your friend will love AOSP roms during the first few months, I know I did, but he will eventually grow tired of them (wild guess, I know).
Plus, Viper One S allows the user to swich to the AOSP lockscreen, multitasking and status bar :D

For AOSP roms, I recommend Illusion ROM (Rootbox/AOKP base)
BUT you will have to update the One S to HBOOT 2.15 and flash a 3.4 kernel, otherwise it wont work - and that applies to any latest version of any AOSP ROM

Now, if you dont want to do all that shit, I recommend DeviantXone 2.1 (4.2.2) .... it has been renamed to Illusion , so you will find it in the Illusion thread ... it's good :tu

So about a week and a half ago I finally rooted my Nexus 4. Yes I know, I have the most easily rootable phone, and am a well known advocate of rooting, why the hell did it take me 5 months to root my phone. The answer to that is that there hasn't really been a reason to root my phone. The nex4 is fast, the battery life is more than adequate, and I haven't had any issues. So the main reason I rooted was because Tmobile turned LTE on in San Antonio. Don't get me wrong, Tmobile's HSPA+ is plenty fast, speedwise, but the latency leaves a little to be desired. Latency is an area where LTE excels.

The best latency reading I have ever gotten with H+ was 44ms, I usually average about 250 or so. With LTE, I average about 30 ms. Speedwise, (once again, this isn't a huge deal to me) I would average 8Mbps on HSPA+ and with no bars on LTE, I average 9. In a full bar area I top out around 25. 8 is plenty for me, but more isn't worse. LOL.

Not to shabby for a supposedly not LTE ready phone.

Yeah, as I predicted (before I got LTE), I rarely utilize the high speeds. Some areas I'm getting 45Mbps - but what am I doing at that time which requires so much bandwidth?

I haven't noticed any big things, just many minor things that CM does. I love the fact that if you swipe down from the right side, it is your quick tiles, and swipe from the left side, its your notifications. Also, a bug in stock that they seemed to fix is that when playing youtube on wifi, it stuttered like a motherfucker to the point that I would turn off my wifi and just run over mobile. Now, youtube is smooth as butter.

As long as you unlocked your bootloader when you first got the phone, rooting a Nexus device is painless.

If you waited 5 months before unlocking? Welp, there goes all your user data. Happened to me before with my Galaxy Nexus, and Helium Backup wasn't a thing then. :oops

The only app that allows for backup / restore without root is helium . Since you will want to restore after uprooting, it seems like the way to go

Particular reason for unrooting? I had to do it a few weeks ago cuz I had to return my phone to Samsung. If you're doing the same thing, there's a few things you'll need to do on top of unrooting if you want to retain your warranty.

I'm not sure if the Note II has the same thing but for my S4 if you go to Settings/About (or go into download mode), your status will say 'Custom' as opposed to 'Official' if you haven't wiped the flash counter, installed stock ROM + recovery and removed all traces of the root.

Maybe you already did all this, so as long as the status shows official, you're good.

Texts can be backed up with the app 'SMS Backup and Restore' and you can email the backup file to yourself (or upload to Google Drive/Dropbox). Contacts should be all synced to your Google account so it shouldn't require anything more.

I can't find what guide I looked at right now but I'll give you a short summary in the mean time:

1) If you backed up (nandroid) your original ROM in CWM/TWRP, restore it. Otherwise you'll have to fiind and flash your original firmware from your carrier (using Odin).
2) Find your original stock recovery on XDA and flash it with Odin.
3) Download TriangleAway from Chainfire to wipe the flash counter.
4) Unroot. I found this annoying to do with Superuser, so if you have this root, I'd go to the PLay Store and download 'SuperSU' instead. It will replace superuser and you can unroot from withing SuperSU app.
5) Remove remnant root files in your system directory. Particularly delete 'busybox' and 'su' if they are found in /system/xbin.
**Note, I think I actually did step 5 before step 4, because you lose root access to this directory if you do 4) first.

Check About/status (or go into download mode) and see if your phone status says OFFICIAL (as opposed to CUSTOM)

I know in Canada they started opening up Samsung Service stores (Pretty sure the repair is subcontracted). There's only like 3-4 in the country though, although one is 25 min from where I live. But contrary to what I heard before, they don't repair it the same-day, so might as well ship it if it's not in my way home.

Do they have an advanced replacement option and just put a hold on a card to make sure you return the original? The hold usually blows (retail value of phone) but having an express option can be nice. Sorry for all the questions but I am just curious how other ppl do it.

Samsung does it pretty terribly. I was talking to a Mexican dudes from Compton whenever I called. They didn't send a loaner phone or anything to me, but claimed I could go to my phone provider with my reference # and they'd provide me with a loaner. I never did try that option, tbh, as I got my phone from my cousin off a different carrier (it's unlocked to another now). So I basically had no phone for a week while it was fixed at the service center in my city.

I'll describe my problem:
- phone would not charge on AC, but only through USB. Rooted S4 running RootBox.
- called Samsung, gave me a case# and was told I can drop it off at centre. Called repairs and they said they don't fix it on the spot.
- called Samsung, emailed me a UPS waybill. Shipped it to centre
- No updates on service website, called repairs daily. 'Fixed' it after a week, by only doing a factory reset (I did multiple times before)
- got phone back, problem appeared still there. Called Samsung and they insisted it was the AC charger I owned. I said it wasn't since AC charged other phones (and vice versa).
- they said they'd send me a new charger, I said whatever sure. Next day, phone start charging again with original AC and haven't had an issue since (weird as fuck :lol)
- called Samsung 2 weeks later 'where's my free AC charger MFas?" I need to scan my reciept to get it (but not to get it repaired apparently). charger comes the next day by UPS from Compton

It might be a different experience in the US, but that's what happened to me. I've heard that had gone to my carrier to get a loaner phone, you'd be credit charged between $50-125 for a loaner, which isn't too bad. Of course, it'll be a crappy ass phone.

Thanks for the answer!

#1 reason why I never want to root is because of the warranty. They can void it for the littlest modification that was not intended to or was not designed by them for the end user. Fuck, even if you didn't root they'll still look for a reason to void your warranty.

:lol I'll take my chances Venti. I've rooted/jailbroken my past 5 phones (iPhone, iPhone 3GS, S2, One X+, S4) and this is the first time I've ever had to send a phone for repair in 6 years. Even then, you can restore it to stock.

Anyways, my parents dropped one of their tablets (ASUS Transformer Pad) and even the touchscreen wasn't working. I had originally unlocked the bootloader, rooted, and installed RootBox for them when they first got it earlier this year. I told them to just send it to ASUS and see what happens - at worst they pay for screen repairs.

Apparently ASUS replaced the screen and sent it back to them (re-flashed w/ stock firmware but still unlocked) for no fee, 2 day turnaround with UPS. Hilarious.

Carriers don't seem to care for sure - I replaced my rooted and BL unlocked one X+ with the first month because the speakers sounded scratchy.

Manufacturers seem to be a mixed bag, like Samsung for sure checks to see if your phone has ever been flashed, even if it's stock when you return it.

Just pure CM. Just seemed TOO basic. I loved it back in the day because it improved battery life and made things run faster but touchwiz runs really fast as it is and battery life seems even with either. Still have a custom recovery so I could always try new things.

BTW rooting is so much easier on this than on the Moment. It wasn't too hard on the HTC Hero if I remember correctly either. The s3 was ridiculously easy though.

Holy shit forgot about your friend :lol

No S-OFF is not required

- Root with AIO toolkit, for the One S get TWRP instead of CWM; I know you dont like the former, but fot the One S, TRUST ME, you want TWRP.

- Now, do A LOT of reading in the Development thread, because you may have to update the firmware in order to run the latest AOSP roms (because of the latest 3.4 CM kernel) .......... HOWEVER since his phone hasnt been rooted yet, he has probably received the latest firmware update ... if he hasn't check the OTA update in settings; once you have rooted, go to bootloader and check the HBOOT version : if it says 2.15, then you won't have to update the firmware

- As far as Sense ROMs go, Maximus HD has just been released .... Sense 5 and JB 4.2.2 ... ported from the One XL, since HTC won't release an official Sense 5-JB 4.2.2 for the One S ... lol faggits .... this one also requires HBOOT 2.15.... there is also Magio ROM, which does not require HBOOT 2.15, but they just need to fix call-in audio issue.

- Achieving S-OFF is required if you want to flash a ROM without having to flash the kernel separately ... I'm on S-ON and I use an app from Play Store called "Flash image GUI" ... it saved my life; you can also flash the kernel manually by connecting the phone to PC and typing a CMD, but Flash Image GUI is easier

Now you see why I said " fuck off" to HTC :lol

Got this from XDA :

So I should do it in this order:

- SuperCID
- S-OFF
- then flash 3.4

Yeah definitely get the new tool kit and just run a check first to make sure it's working good for you. I extracted the new tool kit and ran a quick check to see my CID the first time it did not work I had to move the folder to my C: drive root as I had it buried in my desktop, something was changed on the new version and it doesnt seem to like being buried in folders so I put it right on the C: drive. Do the same for the firmware update folder.
2. S-OFF
3. Firmware update

LOL, I read your freaking post bro, don't know why you think I didn't. Still had issues (which others have had on XDA). Did all the steps, had no problem unlocking bootloader, installing recovery, rooting, etc. If I want to just install a Sense ROM I would've been done after 20 minutes.

The AOSP and kernel part is what screwed me over. I didn't update the firmware initially cuz I saw it has already had 2.15 (like I read in your post), but after I started to doubt myself (probably due to the beers) since it was bootlooping. I even tried to install Rogers/Fido original RUU but it gave me an "error 155" which i've seen on xda. Some people said SuperCID would fix that but I doubt it since the same people with the original error 155 had the same error while Super CIDing.

Anyways, he's running a rooted Sense ROM for now. When I figure shit out, I'll head back over.

I went instead with Xposed framework/modules; instead of flashing a custom ROM for just a couple features, I can add features/tweaks separately

Pretty badass

Xposed framework pretty sick tbh, can have custom settings for apps too

Should try Liquidsmooth or Mahdi Rom tho :lol

:lol

The only thing that will break me down is when my tablet will stop getting major OS updates. Then I will flash ported ROMS with the latest Android versions.

Got a free S4 as a loyalty bonus from my carrier yesterday.

30 minutes in, I was getting irritated as fuck with Touchwiz. Odin, Autoroot, CWR, slapped the GPE ROM on it in the span of 1 hour.

Now I like my newest phone. :lol

I kept TouchWiz but I use Xposed Framework for the things I want to tweak

TW doesn't bother me, people are making a big deal about it tbh.
If I wanted stock Android I would have gotten a cheaper phone or a Nexus or a Moto.

What's thw point of getting a flagship phone woth great hardware if you slap stock Android

But in your case, you got if for free, so it's ok

Stock Android with its cleaner UI, better performance, and less internal memory consumed, on OEM flagship specs appeal to some people. Hence the GPE versions.

For all their good points, one thing Nexus phones have never claimed to have are the latest and best specs.

Meh, I've had only 1 or 2 minor lags since I got my S4

I use Nova Launcher anyway , and Sammy aps UI (dialer, etc) doesn't bother me since I dont spend 24 hours a day staring at them

And as for GPE editions ,it depends on the phone

The HTC One M8 GPE allows you to download HTC apps from the Play Store and has kept a few features from the original M8

But you don't have that with Sammy GPE

Never said that, but you still read comments from Nexus 5 owners saying "oh the camera quality is not that bad" or "good enough for me" just so they can feel better about their purchase :lol

That's because Samsung, in its misbegotten drive to differentiate itself from Android, has kept all of its apps proprietary and away from the Play Store.

My primary phone is a Nexus 5, and the camera is no issue for me since I'm not a camera guy.

Outside of a Moto X (which won't work over here), it's just the best value available.

See? I was right :lol

Nah, just kidding

The Moto is G is a good value too; specwise not as good as Moto X or Nexus 5, but still good, and a quad core for that price off contract ($179) .... pretty good deal imo :tu

TBH, if the Moto X got released before I got my S4, I would probaby have gotten it tbh ... or not, since I need that extra storage

Fuck the LTE Moto G though. Moto should have made that compatible with global LTE bands.

What does a launcher have to do with rooting? :lol

I've tried different launchers and I always go back to Nova

Buzz launcher is cool if you want to have those complicated and fancy homescreens (you can pick from a lot of cool homescreens made available by Buzz users)

The baseband is software-based and can help improve cellular connections. The LTE bands are antenna-dependent, though, and are hardware-based.

Custom ROMs can help improve your connection if you have a compatible band. If not, you're shit out of luck.

I always thought I needed to root for a launcher? So no? All I do with my phone is call, text, open apps and play games...
