My short fat fingers would have burned the fucking strings off that thing! It's not all about big hands, a lot of it is simple flexibility and dexterity.

I've heard Cinnamon Girl and Southern Man 100s of times and I guess it must be a matter of taste, but to me, the guitar work in there by Young is not that spectacular. In fact, I always liked Steven Stills' sound the best out of all the guys in CSNY.

By the way, the question is smart. Avoiding the dumb "Who's the best guitarist..." is a must, in the end it's a matter of taste. Is Satriani a virtuoso or just a very "technical" one (dont know the literal translation of that, sorry). Is composition more important than performance? or the other way? etc.. etc...

But I could see how you'd get burned out. I just enjoy his style of playing.
And he uses a massive pick too.
Back when I was into guitar I played around trying to get my guitar to sound like his but it's all in the fingers and tone.

Actually, THE MOST RECOGNIZED notes of any recorded song are the opening notes of the song, "Benny and the Jets" with the guitar work of Davey Johnstone. Little kids in Africa recognize the first three notes of that song.

My third choice, I guess, would have to be John Mellencamp. Or Tom Petty. It's a tossup.

On a serious note, I think Dick Dale (and Link Wray too) were not merely links in the evolution of the electric guitar. They blazed trails that might not otherwise exist.

AllMusic.com (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:aq6dtr59klkx~T1)

Dick Dale wasn't nicknamed "King of the Surf Guitar" for nothing: he pretty much invented the style single-handedly, and no matter who copied or expanded upon his blueprint, he remained the fieriest, most technically gifted musician the genre ever produced. Dale's pioneering use of Middle Eastern and Eastern European melodies (learned organically through his familial heritage) was among the first in any genre of American popular music, and predated the teaching of such "exotic" scales in guitar-shredder academies by two decades. The breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique was unrivalled until it entered the repertoires of metal virtuosos like Eddie Van Halen, and his wild showmanship made an enormous impression on the young Jimi Hendrix. But those aren't the only reasons Dale was once called the father of heavy metal. Working closely with the Fender company, Dale continually pushed the limits of electric amplification technology, helping to develop new equipment that was capable of producing the thick, clearly defined tones he heard in his head, at the previously undreamed-of volumes he demanded. He also pioneered the use of portable reverb effects, creating a signature sonic texture for surf instrumentals. And, if all that weren't enough, Dale managed to redefine his instrument while essentially playing it upside-down and backwards — he switched sides in order to play left-handed, but without re-stringing it (as Hendrix later did).

"Live Rust" is the jam.

Yes, I would agree with that. Did you ever listen to "Arc" and "Weld"? That stuff is mind-bending. "Arc" is just one big track recorded of the all-night jam session when they were recording "Weld".

There are a lot of songs where Neil Young is better on the guitar than the ones I mentioned, those are just the ones I thought would appeal to the masses (and they might even recognize). I have pretty much everything he has ever recorded that is available on CD. There are a couple of early recordings, with Buffalo Springfield, and of him with Crazy Horse, that have just become available on CD in the past couple of years ("Hawks and Doves", "American Stars and Bars", and "Lucky Thirteen").

Two of my favorite songs on one of his earliest albums, "Sleeps With Angels" are "Safeway Cart" and "Trans Am". But, my favorite album/CD of all time is "Harvest Moon", and I really like "Old Ways", too (it is a recording of duets with Neil and various other artists).

I like Neil's old stuff better than the newer stuff. At one time, I knew every single word to every single song on both "Harvest" and "After the Gold Rush". Those are still what I want in the CD player when I am driving any distance. I have to say that I prefer "Are You Passionate" to "Greendale", though, among the newer stuff. I think "Let's Roll" is the ultimate tribute to the victims of 9/11; it is an excellent song.

No, I want it, and I will watch it, it's just that my DVD player is not working right now. I'll get it fixed or get another one and then I'll watch it.

I got it when I ordered the CD. But, I buy stuff online all the time. I don't know of any stores that would have it. Just have to shop around, I guess.

Note:

According to Amazon it comes with the CD (I know mine did, but I pre-ordered mine before release, so I thought maybe it was some kind of special, but Amazon says they come with all the CDs); have you bought the CD somewhere and did not get it?

In fact, I always liked Steven Stills' sound the best out of all the guys in CSNY.

Manassas is one of my favorite albums ever - not just because of the individual songs, but the work as a whole - it flows so well - not to mention Stills has a kick-ass voice, and the guitar work is great.

That was one of my favorites at one time, also, Jekka. I don't have that album (CD) any more.

If I were to pick a favorite Stills song, I'd probably go with "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" (re: Judy Collins) pre-Young.

All good choices. There are a few guys out there who completely blow me away with their technique -- when I hear then I have no idea how they are making the sounds they make. I don't listen to them terribly often but am always impressed:

Stanley Jordan -- eight fingers on the fretboard, a one man band.
Les Paul -- two fingers on the fretboard and a picking arm locked into position after a car accident. Lightweight tunes, but plays better than most fully-abled guitarists who aren't 90 years old.
Leo Kottke -- His acoustic work is so dense and intricate, but please never sing again.

There are some guys who may not have had the best technique, but knew pretty much exactly how to fit his guitar into a song -- probably in the same vein as Neil Young:

Grant Green, Robbie Robertson.

George Benson was an absolute badass on guitar before he decided to become a pop singer -- alot like Nat King Cole on piano.

All time greatest is Stevie Ray Vaughan strictly because I'm a Texan. You guys should check out an upcoming guitar player who has actually been around for quite some time. If you're from Texas maybe you've heard of Monte Montgomery. He does a version merge of Pinball Wizard and Oh Well that rocks.

i like satch because he kind of reinvented the guitar but got less credit compared to guys like srv, etc

he created THE defining electric guitar sound of the 80s...sure the 80s metal bands were partially fruity but one thing they have on today's rock bands is their guitarists knew how to fuckin play and throw down some sick solos. today solos are extremely rare, and fast solos are non-existent.

I can't believe Paul Gilbert wasn't mentioned but his days with Racer X are some of the greatest shread albums ever. That guy had unbelievable sweeping arpeggios.
My list would be Paul Gilbert, Allan Holdsworth, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Gary Moore, Angus Young, Dimebag Darrell, Vandenberg, and etc. There are more but I have to look it up.

He has probably one of the most recognizable guitar tones in the world.
Love Santana, but Peter Green blew him away. Tone on that '59 Gibson is sick.

Not to diminish his playing in the least, but I remember reading a guitar mag in HS in which they said that when Gibson took apart Green's Les Paul to do a "signature" reissue, they discovered it had an improperly soldered connection that knocked his signal out of phase ever so slightly to help give him that immediately recognizable sound.

Throwing this one up just because it has a great off-kilter solo, and because of the people on the stage that night made an oddly good group: Kevin Ayers, John Cale, Nico, Mike Oldfield, and Brian Eno.
