ESPN coming out with a 30 for 30 on the Bad Boy Pistons

It looks like the Bad Boys will be the subject of an ESPN retrospective.

ESPN spokesperson Jennifer J. Cingari confirmed that a “30 for 30” documentary on the notorious Pistons squads that won two world titles and battled for Eastern Conference supremacy in the late 1980s and early 90s is “in the works.”


“A ‘30 for 30’ on the Bad Boys is in the works, but we don't have an air date or a film summary yet,” she said in an e-mail to the Free Press today.


The news should be exciting to Pistons fans, who have been clamoring for a documentary on that era of Pistons basketball since ESPN started airing the documentaries in October 2009.


The award-winning series has featured looks at the career of two-sport athlete Bo Jackson, basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan’s brief flirtation with minor-league baseball and other notable sports stories since ESPN was formed in 1979, hence the “30 for 30” title.


The Pistons have been approached by producers, but the project is still in the planning stages.

Dumars though a bit overrrated defensively was sooo fundamentally sound. Hardly changed his expression. And though a prick Isiah is criminally underrated and imho shits on John Stockton and is probably 2nd best PG I have seen after Magic ...

Gotta agree completely with this. On another note Laimbeer was such a unique player. Think 7' hardass version of Divac but with better flop skills. God I hated him even though the Spurs never played a meaningful game against them. It's kind of sad the way history has forgotten about those Piston teams. They completely revolutionized basketball by showing you could win and win big by giving great defensive effort. I mean it felt like the entire 90s were Pistons basketball when you had Chicago, New York, Houston, and San Antonio win titles or get extremely close by playing with that Pistons mindset. I really miss the style of ball they brought to the league now that it's so focused on scoring and protecting perimeter guys. It was an awesome era they brought to the sport.

I was a bandwagon Pistons fan back when I only casually followed the NBA. My favorite player before Robinson came into the league was Isiah Thomas. Guy was amazing. Everyone was so far up Magic, Bird, and Jordan's ass at the time, it was fun seeing a bunch of guys who could give them hell. So many characters on that team too. The Worm, the spider, the microwave, Laimbeer, Rick Mahorn. Dumars was probably the only real Jordan stopper there ever was. The fact that everyone hated them made me like them more because most people were Lakers, Celtics, or Bulls bandwagoners.

I think the Pistons would still have beaten a healthy Lakers squad that year. They almost did the year before with Isiah on one leg. They were much better than in 1988, had homecourt in the series, and were bloodthirsty for revenge.
