The Grizz defenders should never be outside the three point line on Tony or Ginobili. When teams turn up their focus on stopping Tony or Manu, defenders tend to have the on ball defender focused and guarding the ball. Sure they may go under the screen on a pick, but that's not the problem. The problem is the defenders are guarding Tony and Manu out at half court. What happens is Tim or Splitter sets the pick 35 ft from the hoop and coming off of that pick, the Spurs have a ton of space if they don't trap. And if they do, the Spurs find the roll man playing 4 on 3 with 2 of the Grizz defenders standing way beyond the 3.
Seriously, force Tony or Manu to score 70 points between them shooting 18 to 23 feet jumpers from the top of the key. Don't let yourself be picked anywhere beyond 18 feet. This way, all 5 defenders are jamming the scoreable areas of the court rather than having 1 sometimes 2 defenders left in the middle of nowhere above the 3 point line. If you stand at the free throw line even if Tony/ Manu is at half court, then Tiago is forced to pick you in the key or Tony/ Manu is just forced to shoot. This way, your help defenders don't need to help off the 3 point line either since Tony/Manu won't have such a head of steam running into the key from all the way out coming off a pick.
If Conley/Allen just stands a step inside the free throw line, I don't know how Tony Parker gets layups and I don't know how the Spurs create anything off of a pick and roll/pop. You eliminate the wing and corner three. And you eliminate ball movement. What you do give up and what you'll live with is Tony and Manu taking a dribble in 18 footer / 3 pointer from the top of the key all game.
Manu especially does this in late clock situations where he cuts up the key and catches it 40 feet away from the hoop and that's where Tiago comes to do pick and roll. If Manu's defender just stays at the FT line, there is nothing Manu can do except take a top of the key 3. You live with that.
Advanced stats will tell you in a couple of years as you kids learn, that having any defender in an area of the court that is not a threat is retarded. This whole get up on the ball, get in his grill is stupid outside of a player's shootable range. No reason any defender of Tony Parker's should have their feet outside the 3 point line at any point of any possession. Doesn't' matter if he's cutting, or if he's standing way out at half court.
