It's about to shake things up, per par.
Game 1 @ MIA
Game 2 @ MIA
Game 3 vs. MIA
Game 4 vs. MIA
Game 5 vs. MIA
Game 6 @ MIA
Game 7 @ MIA
It's pretty key since, unless we manage to beat the heat in five games or less (unlikely), if we want to win this series we are going to have to close it out in Miami.
It was decisive for Miami last year, since they were able to steal one in OKC, then we win their three consecutive home games and win the series 4-1.
EDIT: And, if we play Indiana, we will have HCA, so the opposite will be true.
Spurs have HCA if Indiana advances.

If it's vs. Indiana, the Spurs have HCA and games 1,2,6,7.

Shit, yeah, you are right.
It's probably not happening, in any case.

Spurs need to steal one of the first two in Miami

A lot of people get caught off guard by the 2-3-2 format, tbh. It pretty much changes the complexion of the whole series.

Miami dropped Game 1 to the Bulls and Game 2 to the Pacers (and nearly Game 1 too). Im confident we can take one of the opening games in Miami if they advance.

Spurs have to win 1 of the first two, and must then win game 3. Away teams that manage that have a good chance of pulling off the upset, but even so, they usually have to finish it in 6. It is very, very hard to sweep the 3 middle games, so you almost have to win 2 away.

To be honest I love this format since the Spurs have 10 days off. Better to be rusty in an away game. Miami's crowd has a habit of showing up late as well so they have time to get into the swing of things. Pressure is on Miami to not give us the split and while it'd be nice to finish it out in the three games at home, we'd be fine getting just two.

I think the 3/2/3 format actually hurts the team without HCA a LOT. The Spurs will need to take one of the first two games to have a chance imo. They will likely (or obviously I guess) have to take one at Miami again at the end too. I don't think we will win 3 straight at SA, so that means we'll have to take two at Miami, and I don't see us taking two in a row.
We need to split, win 2/3, then split again (or win game 6). Winning one of the first two is extremely key.

Im fucking pissed we didn't get HCA tbh, also it would suck winning in Miami, finishing it in SA would just be awesome but the spurs would have to win 5 for that to happen

I keep forgeting, what's the logic in having this format JUST for the Finals? I also thought they were supposed to take this format away this year. Or is this the last year they're sticking with it?

I want Indiana to win purely for the ratings aspect.

The cost to move set ups for the entire playoffsis decreased by 25% (assuming 7 game series) if you have this format in 1 round. Actually more than that considering the media presence is MUCH greater for the finals than any other round. It's just a way of saving money, both for the network, and the journalists that cover the playoffs, who for at least one round have to book less flights, etc.

HCA only really matters in the Finals if there's a game 7. The last two champions won without it. Which makes it interesting if the Spurs don't have it. What are the chances of that happening 3 straight years?

Thanks for info, man. Makes sense now. Ironically, they don't have this format in baseball for the World Series, though.

2-3-2 format is total crap. As mentioned, it's reasonable thinking the team without HCA will not sweep three games in a row at home and so it will have to win 2 games away. OTOH only the Pistons did it.

As a fan, I'd take winning the chip in Miami over losing it, any day.

Yeah, I think the Spures have to split the first two in Miami and win 2 of 3 in SA. Gotta be up 3-2 heading into game 6.

2-3-2 is a historical thing simply because of the pain/difficulty/cost to travel (typically) coast-to-coast multiple times. Those cross-country flights decades ago were not exactly a pleasant experience - it's not the best now, but it's light-years better than it used to be. It's not as big of a factor within conference for 2-2-1-1-1 because the furthest travel (in theory) is north-to-south - not as painful as LA to Boston, etc - so travel times/cost are cut down substantially.
While the equipment/camera moves is no where near as difficult/as expensive as it used to be, the pain of potential multiple 6+ hour flights back and forth is the major deterrent.

Actually, the World Series have been played in a 2-3-2 format since 1924. In fact, the 2-2-1-1-1 is never used in the MLB nowadays, as the LCS are contested with the 2-3-2 as well and the Division Series are best-of-5. It's only the NHL that sticks to the 2-2-1-1-1 even for the Stanley Cup Finals.

Both teams play better on the road. 3 straight home games should guarentee Spurs 2 wins. Can we go .500 in Miami? yeah.
The Mavs won 2/3 at home and it worked. Realistically we will have to close this out in Miami in game 6 or 7. I think we can do it.

The Heat did it in '06 and '12.
