View Full Version : The 9 days of rest begin now

Let the perpetual "rest" vs. "rust" debate begin.

For what it's worth, the Heat and Pacers can't possibly get more than 6 days of rest between the time their series ended and the day the Finals began (the Miami-Indiana series, mathematically, cannot be ended in fewer than five games).

The finals will begin on June 06. That is 10 days of rest, regardless of how long the Miami/Indy series goes.

Manu was limping in the fourth. Kawhi didn't have his normal bounce this series. TP and TD could always use extra rest.

I don't think there is a rest vs. rust debate with regards to the Spurs. These Spurs will always take the rest.

Definitely take the rest.

The Spurs now have 9 days to rest, heal, and gameplan for the Finals.

That also means we have 9 days to revel in their sweep of the Grizz before the Finals begin.

Manu needs to fix whatever ailment he has in his shooting.
If Manu shooting heals to good (not great) shooting. I like our chances.
Plus, we have a coach that always takes good advantage of our off time.

If the spurs cover themselves with rust I see them missing shots and being slower and unproductive on ofense and not sharp enough on D. That's automatic loss.
But then again if they use the rest wise. Manu can be unstoppable with the rest. Parker and Kawhi more healed. Esp. TP with the break he had at the end of a season, his shape is going up. No contusion = best Parker ever.

Of course I'd take rest over rhythm like LJ said cause 4th Q fumes that spurs could play with = demolition. And Miami if in the Finals can run spurs to death.

If the Pacers manage to make this a six-game series, then we could be looking at 9 days of rest for San Antonio vs. just 4-5 days of rest for Miami.

Granted, as far as rest vs. rust is concerned, there may not be much difference between 9 days and 4 days of rest, especially since Miami doesn't have to travel for the first two games. But it could still be some advantage.

I think the "rust" argument has always been overrated. As for Spurs-Warriors Game 1, I don't think 'rust' was the main reason the Warriors jumped out to an early lead. After all, they jumped out to an early lead in Game 2, too.

Bingo. Rust could affect the Spurs through a few quarters, maybe even the first game. Lack of rest could affect the Spurs through the whole series. Between those two options, the obvious answer is to take the rest (not that they really have the option).

Take this time to get Tony's calf, Kawhi's knee, Tim's legs, and Manu's whole body back in shape. Practice hard the last few days, and deal with the rest as it comes.

Let's not forget game 3 of the Memphis series, when the Spurs came out like they were playing hot potato instead of basketball.

If it takes them an entire quarter to shake off the rust, it's worth it, because they aren't going to be able to beat that Miami team without the extra spring in their step from nine days off.

as someone said above, at this point you take the rest. the Rust vs Rest debate is only important if both teams are in that position, and both are looking for an edge over rest.

I take peace in the fact we had no choice. With our age, we shouldn't be extending series, we need to take care of business. Look at Miami, Indiana is wearing them down, and even though Dwade and Lebron probably eat HGH for breakfast, even they are starting to grind down a bit.

Timmy and Manu weren't thrilled to have 10 days off. Timmy even said that Spurs will probably be rusty through that first game. TP seemed to think we needed it, he probably does after all the work he's done.

I also look at the Spurs/Warriors series. They were more hot at first, but we started to find extra gears throughout that series while they looked worn down. I hope that is the same with the next series.

It should be rest vs rhythm, not rust imho.

people still arguing? didn't bosh/james both tweak something minor in game 4? while our guys are getting time off all the nagging injuries (i'm sure timmy's knee is sore, despite punisher), we all know Kawhi has been battling his knee, Parker's ankles could definitely use time off, and El Contusion always seems to be nursing something, even timvp noted he had a limp at some point in game 4. in the meantime, the Heat/Pacers are playing a tough, physical series where guys are going to get hit hard, get banged up. its pretty safe to say we have the enviable position, plus more time for pop and the staff to study the opponents, while the east guys are busy planning for each other

That makes me think about the 2007 season and how the Spurs had a lot of rest between beating the Jazz and playing the Cavs. The Spurs played well, but I wonder if that was because of the long rest or in spite of it.

Actually, the Spurs were a machine against Utah and they never got their rhythm back against Cleveland. Fortunately it didn't matter much.

Since miami has home court this is an ideal scenario to steal game 1. Rest vs Fatigue.
If you end up losing game 1 no biggie.

Couldn't have asked for a better scenario, from a rest and time off perspective, before the conference finals began.

Spurs: 4-0 sweep in WCF.

Eastern Conference Finals = goes to 7 games.
