Pop likes him, yeah, yeah, yeah: The Spurs took the court for their morning pregame shootaround just a few hours after the stage and last pieces of equipment had been packed up and carted off after a Sunday night concert by Paul McCartney and his band.
Several members of the Spurs' traveling party took in the concert by the former Beatle, including Popovich, who was a high school student in Indiana when The Beatles' “invasion” of America took place in the mid-1960s.
“Obviously, his talent is off the charts, and then you think that he actually wrote those songs,” Popovich said of McCartney's performance. “Start with his voice, his musical abilities and his talent, all of that, and it's matched by his effort. That's what amazed me.
“He was awesome. Just awesome.”
And he likes them: Spurs guard Patty Mills and forward Aron Baynes on Sunday had to talk their way past a pair of burly bodyguards to use the weight room in the health club at the team's hotel.
That was because McCartney was getting in a pre-concert workout, and the club was closed to others.
“They knew we just wanted to get a lift after our practice, so they let us in,” Mills said. “We walked in, and there he was, Paul McCartney. Before we could say hi or anything he said, 'Go Spurs go.'
“It was one of those rare moments when I didn't know what to say. A special moment, and now I can tell everyone I lifted weights with Paul McCartney.”
