dude I haven't read any of the books. After I saw TLotR trilogy for the first time I spent pretty much every second of my free time online reading all about the universe Tolkien created. I didn't even care about the books anymore, I was more interested in the ridiculously detailed history of everything. But fwiw I love how all these characters (even Frodo) are involved, ESPECIALLY Radagast considering there were only 5 wizards sent to Middle Earth. I know Jackson is a big time Tolkien fan so it's not as if he's gonna go off and do his own thing while leaving Tolkien in his rearview

I first bought the books as I found them, yardsales/thrift shops. Yep the trilogy...75 cents. Then I bought one big book with all the stories in it....a buck. I have made numerous attempts to delve into the trilogy, yep...intimidated. Which does surprise me since I did read the 11 book John Carter on Mars epic, the 12 book Conan saga.
Tolkien's world second to none as far as heroic fantasy goes, I do however prefer the world Conan wandered. There's just something about walking in a bar kicking the shit out of the bully, down a tankard of ale then grab the closest wench to you and head upstairs.

Yep, the modern fantasy stuff is so much better than the 1500 year old stuff by anonymous authors that nobody knows jack about.

If you're into heroic fantasy at all, you're going to know about Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs. There is nobody who came later on their level. When talking the macre/horror/supernatural how do you beat Edgar Alan Poe and H.P.Lovecraft? What modern sci fi authors compare with H.G.Wells, Robert Hienlien and Ray Bradbury?
