Awesome. Thanks Bruno. I guess we'll see if other people find a thread like this useful, but I thought it would be nice to have a place to discuss things about international basketball that might not fit into any specific trade, draft, prospect, or free agency thread.

So... for anyone who follows European basketball, why does the Euroleague have best of 5 series in the quarterfinals, but then have single elimination games in the Final Four? If anything, it seems like it should be the other way around. Theories?

It's mostly for medias coverage reasons.

The Euroleague wants to end with an event that is covered by medias from all Europeans countries and not only by medias from countries with a team in the finals. If you do a finals in a best of 5 format that is way more complicate and costly to cover, I'm not sure a lot of other countries medias will follow it.

But, yes, Euroleague has a weird competition format.

Next question: Does anyone know a good site to get European box scores quickly? Partizan won their game tonight, but I haven't been able to find a box score yet. Realgm often has them, but nothing there yet.

That's probably the main reason but also the question of finding the time for playoffs.European clubs play in several competitions, for instance Partizan is playing 4 different every year:euroleague, adriatic league, national cup and now the domestic league.

Since it is the most important competition, I find it strange that the Euroleague isn't the last competition of the year. Is it because the domestic leagues' schedules don't all line up with each other? If so, it seems like it would make sense to come up with a uniform time frame for domestic leagues so that the highest level competition is at the end of the basketball season. I know there are a lot of different organizations involved, but... it would make sense, wouldn't it?

This but also for national federations their competitions are the primary ones, not euroleague.Spanish league has 18 teams, only 4 of them play in euroleague. It's impossible to come up with unique schedule for all domestic leagues.

Exactly. Every league has a little bit different format or domestic leagues, different number of teams in the playoffs, different number of games played etc. It would be impossible to end them all at the same time. Even if they would, I imagine the Euroleague finals would be played late in June, which would be kind of awkward (at least to me - may be because I'm used to it to end in May).

FNT coach has given a first list with 17 players for the 2013 Eurobasket:

PG: Tony Parker, Lo Westermann, Antoine Diot, Thomas Heurtel
SG: Evan Fournier, Nando De Colo, Yannick Bokolo, Edwin Jackson
SF: Nicolas Batum, Charles Kahudi, Mickal Gelabale
PF: Boris Diaw, Joffrey Lauvergne, Kim Tillie, Florent Pietrus
C: Ronny Turiaf, Alexis Ajina

Parker, Diaw and De Colo are in without a surprise. It's noteworthy that De Colo has been selected as a SG. FNT coach has always liked him more at that spot.

Anyway with Spain being without Pau and Navaro,France has a team to fight for gold.

Any reason why Seraphin wasn't included? I don't see how you could possibly take Turiaf over him (just because he is a good buddy of TP?). Noah probably still has to recover from his injuries.

It's really too bad that Bertans had to suffer that injury. This tournament would have given him some valuable experience going against some of Europe's best players. Just noticed that Latvia called up Biedrins, lol.

Sraphin, Mahinmi and Noah all turned down the NT for various reasons.

Gobert and Jean-Charles are alongside Albicy, Leloup and Moerman are on a complimentary list of players who can be called in case of injuries.

Anyone who is interested in next years international draft class should keep an eye on the U19 FIBA World Championship which tips off today. This year it includes some big prospects with Dario Saric, Dante Exum and other Hoop Summit participants like Gabriel Deck and Tomas Dimsa. I still remember the tournament two years ago was really fun to watch with a ton of good players: Bertans, Valanciunas, Karasev, Mirotic, Nogueira, Neto, Jeremy Lamb, Meyers Leonard and probably more that I just forgot.

Tomorrow is the first friendly game for FNT against Finland. Parker will play but I expect him to take it easy. De Colo got injured during practices but reports said that it's a minor injury and that he should play tomorrow game.

Aside of that, Canada will start its training camp tomorrow. Their first friendly games will be in a week against Jamaica and the Americas Championship will start on August 30th. It should be a great learning experience for Cory.

FNT won their first game against Finland 101-93. A fun little game to watch that wasn't played with a great intensity.

Regarding Spurs' players:
- Parker take it very easy in the first half before raising his level in the third quarter with France being down by 8 at the half. He only played 15:40min.
- Diaw was just great. Best french player on the floor. It was the confident, aggressive and smart Boris that is great to watch.
- De Colo didn't start well the game, he made some nice assists but his shoot was off. In the second half, he played way better and put France in control of the game at the start of the 4th quarter.

For Finland, Petteri Koponen can play. Every time I see with Finland, he looks good. I'm curious to see what he could do in the NBA (he was drafted in the first round but never signed).
France should really up their defensive intensity but it was a first game in a very hot arena. They can makes a lot of noise this summer because, aside of Noah, they don't really miss anyone good.

Offensively, France has way better upside than in the past. Ajina, Lauvergne and Tillie can bring something new. Both of them are unexperienced but they have been intriging yesterday. Thir pick n roll game with Tony skills can be very interesting for Vincent Collet.

I am not fond of Nando de Colo. He has a terrible first half. He had a lot of touches but he was creating nothing good, hobbling Heurtel who is pass first guard. In the second half, he was better. Less touches but much more efficient. Evan Fournier has played only garbage minutes but in my mind, he's better than Nando. They have a bit the same profile and I think Evan is more talented than Nando who is very streaky, per par.

Tony played very easily. In the first half, he let the team play without him. After intermission, he scored 10 points quickly, pulling the trigger from 3 point territory after the dribble. It was quite surprising but effective at this time.

Even if it's a friendly game against a relatively poor team, Boris has been great. Even when he was playing with Bordeaux during the lockout, he wasn't this good. Physically, he seems very good. He was doing everything well, with agressiveness. He shot well from 3 or from the post... Just an impressive game. I haven't seen Boris this good for a long time.

Mickal Gelabale is still good, I really don't understand why he hasn't been approached by the Spurs...

Nicolas Batum is very impressive when he's focused and doesn't do too much. His 4th QT is very nice.

Overall, I'm quite happy with what I've seen from our team. Defensively, we have a lot of work to put but we have a very nice upside offensively. It has been a long time in a while that France has been so good on this end of the court for a first game.

France should have their way Germany. They don't have any of their NBA guys, Dirk, Kaman, Schrder, Harris and Ohlbrecht (probably shouldn't count as he was released recently and he is just not all that good, lol) are all absent from the Eurobasket tournament. The roster is made up youngsters who for the most part just play in the domestic league and only a few guys have experience at the international/Euroleague level.

The player to watch out for is probably Tibor Plei, a 7-1 center who is big presence on the defensive end and has a soft jumper too. His draft rights are owned by the Thunder and he is a teammate of Adam Hanga at Caja/Kutxa Laboral.

It's really a shame that this game wasn't televised in Germany.

I really got the feeling that basketball was really growing in Germany. Their teams are improving whit 2 teams in the top 16 of last Euroleague, attendance numbers are high, they have great arenas and a lot of good young players (Plei, Schrder, Benzing, Harris, Neumann, Zirbes, Ohlbrecht...). Now, if the TV coverage isn't good, it certainly won't help the growth of basketball.

Bruno

France won 89-85. They were up by 24 in the third quarter before stop playing against a gritty German team.

Parker is on some beach in Corsica, Diaw barely plays and wasn't trying, De Colo was very good and played a Ginobili-like game.

It is somewhat understandable to not show this game on TV. Without all the NBA guys this German doesn't have any appeal to the general audience. So outside the hardcore fans few people will even notice that something is missing. Still you would think that an opponent like France would be enough to justify a broadcast and the commentators on the stream were the usual TV guys anyway.

Having said that the media coverage of the domestic league/Euroleague/NBA and attendance numbers have been increasing steadily the last couple of years. The entrance of FC Bayern into basketball has also drawn a lot of attention. So it's definitely headed in the right direction. Here's hoping that it doesn't fizzle out again after Dirk retires.

FNT will play 3 games in 3 days between Friday and Sunday against Germany, Croatia and Greece. Parker, who is back form the Corsica's beaches, shouldn't play these games because of a very light pain at a thigh.

My guess is that this injury is more of an excuse not to disappoint people who bought tickets. Parker's goal is to be in shape for the start of the Eurobasket on September 4th and not before it. He is taking as much rest as possible to be able to hold for the 2013-2014 season with Spurs. That's a smart move.

Sanikidze keeps on performing. He can hit 3's (and he'd get a lot less defensive attention in the NBA), rebounds, and hustles a lot, including on D. I'd like to see him get some training camp time, as I suspect that is the only way to test if he can handle NBA 3's (athletically). He could compete with Deshaun for the last spot.

Easy win for FNT against Croatia (92-60).

After 4 friendly games played:
- Diaw has been very good. He has the perfect balance between shooting and passing the ball which is quite rare for him.
- Parker is playing very little and isn't really trying but there are no reasons to be worried about him. He showed some flashes of greatness and his 3 point shooting is surprisingly good.
- I like the way De Colo plays. It isn't always perfect but he is doing some good thing offensively and is playing hard defensively. He might turn as a very pleasant surprise at SG next season for Spurs.

Nando is playing more off the ball game after game and is still efficient. He's also playing only a the SG position. I was a bit pessimistic after the first game he played against Finland because he was hogging the ball too much but he's way better right now.

Tony is improving his game step by step. I'm not worried at all for him. Boris is just great since the beginning of the tour. He's in a good shape and it make things way easier.

Mickal Gelabale is still good at the SF spot. The Spurs need a SF for a long time... I really don't know why he's not signed or approached.

Mickal Gelabale is still good at the SF spot. The Spurs need a SF for a long time... I really don't know why he's not signed or approached.

Gelabale signed with Khimki Moscow two weeks ago. He wanted to remain in the NBA only if he had a guaranteed contract and a spot in a rotation. No teams were obviously ready to give him that so he went in Russia where he should make quite a lot of money.

I could understand why Spurs weren't interested in Gelabale. He is a SG/SF that isn't really stronger and bigger than Danny Green. Spurs are likely better at playing 3 guards lineup with Green or Ginobili at SF than a lineup with Gelabale at SF.

Getting pretty concerning after his underwhelming summer league.

He was fine in SL before getting some minor injury but I agree it would be worrisome if he end up playing bad with Canada this summer given what role should be his next season. If Joseph had a bad summer, Pop should put him in balance with Mills for the backup PG spot.

It looks like FNT got crushed by Greece. I didn't watch the game but Batum and Parker stats are horrible. For Parker, it isn't surprising with him being late conditioning wise and with this game being the 3rd in 3 days. For Batum, I find that he has really struggled to reach the next level in his career for a little over a year and I think it's a mental issue. And Greece won't be as good as they are once the ballhog Spanoulis will be back.

Frenchie
08-11-2013, 02:25 PM
France have had a few good moments. From the end of the first quarter to midway through the third. Defensively, it's was overall good during this stretch, a lot of intesity. Offensively, France cut the lead to 1 running a lot of PnR during the third before beeing crushed.

Tony was just terrible tonight. He couldn't do anything. Moreover, refs weren't blewing their whistle at all with him. When he was driving to the basket, he has been constantly trapped and seemed to have no answer to this plan.

Batum has been worse than Tony. Incredibly weak. During the first half, he was not very involved in the plays and when he had the ball, he was turning it over, looking for dumb passes. During the second half, he was more involved but Greece decided to shut him down, keeping him away from the ball. When the ball finally arrived into his hands, it was in bad situations. Ver very bad game.

Boris and Nando played a good game overall. Nando helped France to be back in the 2nd with craftiness. Boris wasn't afraid to take shots all game long, helping a lot on the board. Both of them were good overall.

You really think that Spanoulis is going to hobble their game ?

Bruno

You really think that Spanoulis is going to hobble their game ?

He has a huge impact on the game and it's not only a positive one. I doubt the balanced offense they showed in that tournament with survive to Spanoulis having the ball so often in his hands.

Tillie, Westermann and Fournier have been cut. I kinda disagree on Westermann and Fournier cut. They haven't been great in these friendly games and FNT might be better this summer with Diot, Heurtel or Kahudi but the goal is also the 2015 Euro that will qualify for the 2016 Olympics. Having Westermann and Fournier at the end of the bench would have allowed to work on the future without really hurting the present.

Frenchie
08-11-2013, 05:56 PM
I'm not convinced by Westermann. He's a a bad defender and a bad scorer. He's young and will probably improve but I don't think he can contribute in September.

However, I don't like to see Fournier cut. He's a very good prospect and when he has been on the floor, he was more intriguing than Diot or Westermann. I really don't like how Vincent Collet has played him during the training camp. He can play a bit at the SF but his real spot is SG. Or, he played the most of his minutes the SF... Instead of Diot who has been bad since the biginning of the camp, I would have taken the Fournier road. Parker, Heurtel and de Colo could have been enough depth at the PG spot. Fournier would have been at the end of the bench but able to bring energy if a game goes bad. Right now, France has Diot instead of him. He's more an insurance option than something else. He's less talented than Fournier but he is a PG...

Bruno
08-11-2013, 07:18 PM
For Collet, it wasn't a choice between Diot and Fournier, it was between Fournier and Kahudi. Collet said that he didn't want to have only 2 PG on the roster and De Colo isn't a PG for him.

Collet has never liked to play De Colo at the PG spot and, when he was forced to because of injuries like in 2010 and 2012, De Colo was bad. De Colo also whined after the Olympics that he struggled during them because his role was very fluctuating. I guess it pushed even more Collet to play him strictly as a SG.

Frenchie
08-12-2013, 03:30 AM
I like to see Nando playing only at the 2. Collet and Pop have both understand the fact Nando is a SG who creates for other players but who is not gooed at the 1. And to see Nando playing as he did during the last 3 games is very interesting for the Spurs because Pop will probably play him next season nearly as Collet does this summer.

Between Fournier and Kahudi, Collet decided to choose the defensive profile. It makes sense if we need to stop with the hot hand at a moment. But if Batum or Gelabale is injured as at the Euro 2011, France gonna have some trouble offensively when Kahudi will be on the floor. Fournier could have been a better insurance policy in this case but we would have no defensive specialist on the team. I wish that we won't regret this choice.

Yesterday, Colet started Nando in the 2nd half instead of Gelabale. It allows Batum to play the 3 and Gelabale to sub in at the 3, opening more minutes for Diot at the 2. It's a way to reduce Kahudi's minutes because when Gelabale and Batum are starting, de Colo subs in at the 2 and Kahudi at the 3. But this lineup has been awful recently. That's why I think Collet could change his starting lineup for the next games. With a Parker, de Colo and Batum backcourt, we played well yesterday.

Bruno
08-12-2013, 09:39 AM
I agree that De Colo will be moved at the SG spot next season with Spurs. Aside of playing SG in summer league, Spurs roster is quite thin at SG/SF with only 4 other players (Leonard, Green, Ginobili and Belinelli). When one these 4 won't play or when Spurs will play small ball with Leonard at PF, there will hae some minutes at SG for Nando.

For the FNT SG/SF rotation, Kahudi and/or Diot will get some minutes early in the Eurobasket when there will have 5 games played in 6 days. After that, Collet will likely go with only a 3 men rotation of Batum, Gelabale and De Colo. If one of these 3 is injured, Collet, as you said, might regret not to have kept Fournier.

A nice and easy win for FNT against Georgia that was likely tired after their game against Serbia.

Diaw and De Colo continue to play well. Diaw is really looking more at his shot that what he did lately with Spurs and FNT. De Colo is having a strong preparation playing exclusively SG. With the little weight he has taken with Spurs and his improved toughness, he even looks good defensively. Parker was coasting and very quiet in that game.

There are a lot of interesting preparation games coming up today, France - Spain and Canada - Argentia among them.

Spain has looked quite beatable in the game I have seen them play in against Poland (without Gortat). They don't have that consistent inside threat any more with Pau and Ibaka absent and Marc just venture into the low post all that much. If the outside shots are not falling their half court offense does'nt look really pretty. The x-factor I'm looking out for is wether Batum and Gelabale will be able to take advantage of Spain's lack of size on the wing to get some easy points inside.

Canada already played yesterday against Puerto Rico and Cory didn't put great stats: http://www.fibalivestats.com/matches/18/08/78/58/74aN43IXyCG6/ 6 points+4 assists in 18 minutes. I wonder if he was matched up on Arroyo or Barea. I hope it was the former because Barea dropped 23 pts on them. Today he will play against Campazzo, a young guy who I recall is a defensive pest a lot like Cory. It should be a good test to see if he can score against a quality defender.

I wouldn't mind bringing him back because he would add another "point forward" to the roster and has more of a "clutch" gene since the last time he was with the Spurs.

Plus Hedo could potentially eliminate any role/minutes Bonner might get and could finally ship him out (or if we aren't that lucky just moved to bottom of rotation).

PG: Parker, CJ, Patty, Nando
SG: Green, Manu, Belinelli
SF: Kawhi, Hedo,
PF: Duncan, Diaw, Pendergraph, Bonner
C: Splitter, Baynes

1st unit: TP, Green, Kawhi, Duncan, Splitter

2nd unit: CJ, Belinelli, Manu, Hedo, Diaw

Also if the Magic do waive Hedo do you think any team would pick him off waiver wire? Even with his contract

It wasn't a 3 but he hit a the game wining shot with 4 seconds left. Parker tried a 3 after but he missed it.

Parker looks great physically and scored 29 points but I didn't like the way he played. He was monopolizing way too much the ball and played no defense. Batum is talented player but he is very weak mentally.

For Spurs players, Diaw wasn't at his best but he keep being aggressive. De Colo had a couple of nice plays but the biggest issue was that he rarely has the ball in his hands.

Spain NT is relatively weak compared to previous years. Marc Gasol was great but the rest of their frontcourt is bad.

Joseph had 20 points in a game Canada lost 77-70 against Brazil. It's good to see him being more aggressive even if the 7/17 from the field and the 5 turnover hint that he was far from perfect.

The bad news is hat the 3 point shooting wows continue for him with a 1/6. He is 2/12 on 3P with Canada this summer. It reminds me a little Malik Hairston who was able to shoot well in the D League and not at a higher level.

Brazil vs Canada starts in about 5 minutes, Joseph will probably have a good scoring game since he'll be guarded by Marcelinho Huertas... and old school spurs fans can get a chance to see Alex Garcia play, do you guys still remember him?

Is there a thread for Eurobasket 2013? It would be nice to have one to comment on the games because there will be a lot of nba players, including 4 current Spurs. :flag:

There isn't an Eurobasket thread but you can start one in the Spurs forum if you want (or I can start if you prefer for whatever reason).

* Could just be Orlando paper rehashing old news but there wasn't much talk in August about the buyout, so maybe things are picking back up again.

Magic working on Turkoglu buyout

Thanks for the news. It's a given Turkoglu will be waived/bought out either by Orlando or by another team just after having traded. Magic could wait to see if his partially guaranteed contract could be used in a trade but there is the risk of a season ending injury that will make his contract guaranteed. So I guess they won't wait too long.

The Eurobasket that start Wednesday, will surely gives a better idea of Turkoglu's level.

And Sanikidze continues to produce. He's not going back to Sienna. Can we please get him into training camp. I would really like to see what he's got at the NBA level.

Nocioni has played well in europe the last 2 yrs and spurs do need a vet player like him at foward... he also plays like a spur and is manu's bff so I can see him fittin in with that last spot goin into the PO's tbh

He would fit the criteria for a player to bring this late in the season:

1. Has familiarity with the NBA game
2. Team is tied for last place in standings for the Top 16

Their season will end around April 3-10 so it would be cutting it close. One issue with Nocioni, does he want to come back to the NBA? I've read in interviews that he likes playing in Euroleague at this stage of his career.

True.

Not sure on his contract situation with Baskonia, I think he is on a 1 year deal.

Since Baskonia won't advance past the Top 16 would they be more willing to accept a buyout of Nocioni? Do they want to re-sign him? What is their opinion of Odom and his impact on the team next season?

Another thing, do Spurs want to fill out the last roster spot?

Seems like Baynes is working his way into the 4th big rotation spot.

Do the Spurs want another SF/PF type player to back up Kawhi?

If anyone feels bored/starved for basketball until the WC starts, the U17 WC tips off in two days:
http://www.fiba.com/world/u17/2014
It's played in Dubai though, so the games will probably only be at watchable times for the Europe/Asia crowd.
I still remember watching young Bertans (struggled like hell shooting the ball there..), Valanciunas, Saric, Karasev, Nogueira, Bogdanovic play at the U19s in 2011. Looking back now, that was one incredibly stacked international age group.

In the past I have been finding stats at various team and league sites.
I just noticed that many ( Stats include Liga ACB (Spain), LNB Pro A (France), Lega Serie A (Italy), Greek Basket League, and the Euroleague and Eurocup) are at the bottom of the Spurs team page on Basketball-Reference. (http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/SAS/2016.html?lid=standings_team)

Drom, I didn't forget about this post. I just didn't know where to put it. I was going to make a more ambitious thread cover Spurs international stashees, but I lost motivation. I'm just going to drop this here for now so others can see it. If I (or someone else, hint) end up making that thread, I'll move this post to the OP. Thanks for the contribution.

I do not know who has his NBA rights, we haven’t contacted his agent, I do not know his status, we have not done anything yet, what I’m telling you is my personal point of view”.

His rights are held by Philly, he was drafted in 2014, pick 52... Wouldn't bet on this going anywhere.

just playing with the trade machine, but it could work for all teams

three team's trade SA - INDY - Atlanta

SA Collins + Turner

INDY LMA + Huerter (Snell)

Atlanta Oladipo + Lyles

probably plus a 2 round pick from us to Atlanta

Why for us We fix the young bigs problem with a decent contract (Turner) and a soon to be extended (hope not max) contract (Collins); the age of both players is in line with the youth movement and the new up tempo style we're gonna play

Why for INDY they trade a big they're not gonna rely too much on and does not look too much to be in their future (they already prefer Sabonis and in the long run him and Bitadze) and a guard they're not so keen in paying next year (with a big money contract, possibly the max) with a proven playoffs big on an expiring contract and a young but already very good shooter that should mesh well with their playing style

Why for Atlanta They are not gonna pay Collins and they are risking big time to lose him for nithing next year (or pay him a price they don't want to pay). Its a pity they lose Huerter but that's for a possible all star in Oladipo (the most valuable piece of all the ones included in this trade) and considering they are plenty of players useful in playing the four and the five that need minutes and starting minutes possibly (Capela, Okongwu, Fernando as n 5, Hunter, Gallo, in part Reddish too at the 4) it doesn't hurt having a decent and experienced reserve big like Lyles.

Other trade suggestions. Big trade 4x4 with Indiana (our favorite trade partner since the hill/nephew trade). To Indiana.... DDR LMA LYLES GAY
Spurs....... TURNER OLADIPO WARREN LAMB
Indiana could be interested considering Warren is probably out for the season and Lamb still out for some games... Plus the perspective to clean their salary cap next season (all 4 are contract years)...

Like the ATL, Indy, SAS three way, but would do this instead:
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=y7bfdmez

Basically
IN: Turner, Hunter
OUT: LMA, Gay, Lonnie

Then Id flip DDR to Heat for best deal possible.
