everything I'm reading says this guy is a 6'10" Sabonis. Who is Oberto?

His main skill is passing. He's good around the basket and plays with a lot of emotion. I think he is going to do fine in the NBA on defense and rebounding -- but it won't be why he's on the court.

The downside is he's a horrible free-throw shooter and is foul prone. He can also let his emotion get the best of him at times.

Oberto captained Argentine team that beat Team USA
By Chad Ford
ESPN Insider

Once again, it looks like the San Antonio Spurs have made yet another international coup.

The Spurs have come to an agreement in principle with Argentinean center Fabrico Oberto, according to his agent, Herb Rudoy.

Oberto, who averaged 14.2 ppg and 7.3 rpg for Parmesa in Spain this season, is widely regarded as one of the top five players in Europe.

He was the team captain of the Argentina team that defeated Team USA at the 2002 World Championships. He dropped 28 points on Vlade Divac in the finale of that tournament.

Oberto is a warrior in the paint with polished moves around the post. He's a good scorer, rebounder and defender who has the toughness and aggressiveness to be an excellent role player in the league. He's also a great passer in the post and frequently draws comparisons to Divac on that skill. Don't be surprised if he is the Spurs starting center on opening night.

Oberto has been hotly pursued by NBA teams for years but has never shown much interest in the past. He's one of the highest paid players in Europe and has been content to be a star over there.

The fact that he turns thirty this year, is considered a little undersized to play center in the NBA (he's barely 6-10 in shoes) and has the free throw touch of Shaq (45 percent from the line) has hurt his free agent stock in the past two years.

The move by the Spurs means that it's unlikely they will bring over their other Argentinean big man, Luis Scola, this season. The Spurs drafted Scola in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft, but have been unable to bring him over because of an enormous buyout provision with his team Tau Ceramica.

Sounds like an OLD bruiser who can Pass the ball. Pretty much like Sabonis except for the occassional 3pt shot.

Is he a good finisher?

Is he a good finisher?

He has a soft touch around the basket. He'll also sometimes go up strong.

I wouldn't rate finishing as one of his strong suits, though.

He was dominant against Vlade and Peja and Bodiroga in the Indy Championship game.

He's also the guy that Stephon Marbury cheap-chopped late in the game in the Olympics, after Oberto had played so well. It broke his hand and he couldn't play in the Gold Medal game against Italy.

This should make for a formidable battle for the starting 5 spot in training camp.

If you think Sabonis of the NBA is one of the best ever then oberto is seriously overhyped in your eyes. I think the old aging sabonis was above average and nothing else. However, the comaprison was mainly in style.

I do not think Oberto is better than Scola, clubalien. They each have their strong points. I have always thought that Oberto was better, and more consistent, on defense.

In addition to helping the Spurs on the court, having Ginobili, Oberto and Scola on the team would make a lot of sense marketing wise.

He was Better than any big men... a real All around player

Oberto is good, but forget about it Sabonis was better.. and taller...

Oberto is good and has a lot of defensive skills and good feet movements. Also a terrible FT shooter. Is a little undersized, but it will be nice to see how he makes against Amare...
also he´s got better hands than Nazr and Scola...

Scola=Offense
Oberto=Defense

Sabonis is 7'3" and over 300 lbs. That alone makes him considerably different than this guy.

I did say sabonis w/o the 3, but I meant the old sabonis that played in portland not the all world player in russia.

But their games sound very similar. Big, aggressive, knows how to get good position, great passer, high BB IQ. Plus, they play the same position center.

I mainly asked the question to get some feedback on the guy.
