View Full Version : How to guard the chalmers/Lebron pick and roll?

It killed us yesterday and we'll see it again probably in game 3.

The 33-5 run happened mostly without wade (and bosh) because the Wade shooting slump would have allowed the spurs to help on this chalmers / lebron pick & roll. Every time the spurs tried to help on this pick & roll, Miller and Allen killed us with 3s

So let's say the heat lineup is again Chalmers / Allen / Miller / Lebron / Birdman. I'd put Parker on Allen, Green on Chalmers and Kawhi on Lebron and swith on the pick & roll

If Wade is playing instead of Allen or Miller then Parker on Chalmers, Green on Wade and Kawhi on Lebron with Green helping on the pick & roll daring wade to shoot from 3

What do you think?

They're going to run it until we can stop it. IF we can stop it. It's difficult to defend cause if you switch it causes terrible mismatches. It'll be interesting to see what Pop does with that, if anything.

Having mismatches is better than what the spurs did yesterday. Leonard and Green both were reluctant to help off the screen (coaches' orders apparently) but essentially we're put in a position where they had to help defend Chalmers' penetration. They both ended up in basically no man's land of being half committed to stopping the penetration and still staying within a step or 2 of James. This indecisiveness ended up in easy point blank jumpers by Chalmers. With ticky tack fouls on both Leonard and Green to boot. So Pop really should have done something about it yesterday, and if he does nothing about it going into game 3 expect more of the same.

As I mentioned in a different thread, I think the spurs' best option is going under that screen and giving Chalmers the long 2 off the dribble.. something he is not accustomed to making (and neither is Allen or Miller for that matter).

make chalmers either pass the ball or make a very long two

You put Danny Green on Chalmers and you switch it.

Good ideas. Will be interesting to see how Pop adjust to this.

Play it straight up in the beginning of the game, going under the pick. That's what the Spurs did at the beginning of game 2, daring LeBroom to take the shot and not share the ball (that is not Mami's offensive gameplan btw, since they like to do what we do -- move the ball around). As the game progresses, if LeBrom starts to take and make the shot, play it straight up and maybe go over the top on a couple to make him drive. Stay big (Duncan and Splitter lineups) so you can rotate and protect the rim when he tries that bull rush bullshit. Stay on shooters as the wing defenders, and don't try swiping at the ball (Manu). Don't switch, as then you not only have one, but two mismatches and will lose almost every time (and get in foul trouble).

You put Danny Green on Chalmers and you switch it.

And if Danny Green isn't in the game..? If it's Parker or Neal on Chalmers like in last night's game? Going under the screen and letting Chalmers have that 20 foot long jumper might be better than having Lebron going straight to the low block/rim against Neal/Parker and collapsing the defense in the process.

I didn't pay enough attention. Did we stop it? How did we do it?

Having Kawhi steal the ball everytime worked out OK.
