Spurs fan always need a scapegoat, tbh.

This is why you live with Neal's BS. Every once in a while, he can explode and win a game for you. There aren't many role players in this league you can say that about.

If Gary Neal simply plays within the offense and shoots when open then he's a really good backup guard. The problems happen when he tries to drive or shoot off the dribble. Or when he decides to jack up 3s from 28 ft and a person in his face. All I want is for Gary Neal to play within himself. He wasn't TOO exposed on D tonight but a few of the Miller 3s were because he didn't rotate.

I'm not a fan of Neal at all, I always criticize him, tbh, but he wouldn't be as effective if he played within the offense..

Guys like Neal are capable of exploding because they play their own individual game..they don't really understand the concept of playing within the offense on a consistent basis, but you live with their playing style because they're talented enough as scorers to potentially explode..

I don't think Neal could have the same type of explosive scoring games if he was a guy that just played within the team offense IMO..

You live and die with those guys, tbh..Neal has been horrible all year, but luckily he finally contributed at the right time..hopefully he doesn't revert to missing shots and playing horrible defense the rest of the series..

But the explosion tonight came from within the offense. Sure, he hit a few bullshit pull up 3s late in the 4th but the game was over by then. Most of his 3s came off of passes when he was open.

I get what you're saying and I agree to an extent. I actually really love those guys that will miss 40 shots and still think they're going to make #41 (matt bonner could use a load of that mentality) because the confidence is what lets you succeed on the big stage. I don't hate Gary Neal but I do hate his D. I generally think he's an effective player but just like he practically won the game tonight he can also do a lot to lose you a game. Knowing when to ride him is actually something Pop probably needs to get a big better at.

No need to apologize. Neal is a bench player for a reason. He is no Ray Allen, he had a great game but I wouldn't be surprised if he went 0-7 in game 4. If he were consistent he wouldn't be playing for the Spurs and would be making huge dollars as a starter somewhere. He is also a terrible defensive player and hurts his team more often than not.

I was upset at Neal the first 2 games, but it was because he wouldn't shoot the ball. Constant pump fakes and ill-advised passes, when he could just take an open shot.

He was trying to be a point guard the first two games. He finally got back to what he's supposed to do. Shoot the ball. In game two he was trying way to hard to spell tony and take up his play-maker minutes. He forgot we got Ginobilli in that unit to take care of that. His job is 'quick-offense.' Always has been when Pop has ever referenced him. There was an interview with Tony P, where he said he had told Neal this would be his series to shine. Neal probably took that the wrong way, and forced himself to step out of his comfort zone.

Neal is a shooter. A scorer. Going back to the basics obviously helped his confidence, and let him settle back into his prominent role. Couldn't have came at a better time.

After he hit that ridiculous 28 footer, the Spurs got the ball back and Neal was bringing it up the floor. I turned to the girl next to me and said "he's going to jack up another one". He brought the ball up the right side, used a little Splitter brush pick to get to the top of the circle, then, nothing but net.

I still didn't care for Neal's shot selection and defense (he left Miller open again in at least one occasion). But at least Pop always had a point guard out there with him and Manu (Cojo &Tony). Good adjustment by Pop. This at least somewhat negated one of Neal's weaknesses and also likely took pressure off Manu to handle the ball, which was such a big problem in game 2. The heat playing small with shooter based linwups allows the spurs to do this. Again, great adjustment by Pop.

Neal is and always has been fearless and that's why Pop loves him.

then why does he keep playing Bonner?

after game two, I said I didn't mind Gary Neal playing, but I hated him playing with Bonner out there. His bad defense is not always his fault. Sure he has some lapses, but he's playing pops scheme with HIS athletic ability, not leonards, so he looks out of positions because that's the only way HE can do it.

That said, he has always had the clutchness. Props to him for showing up on the biggest stage.

Neal's jumping bail out pass to Green in the corner where he ended up falling on his keister also illustrates why Neal's job should be strictly catch and shoot. I'll give him props for doing this well last night. He also has a real nice midrange game as he showed. When he gets into trouble is when he is in at point guard trying to play hero ball. Hopefully going forward we will see a lot more Cory Jo in the spurs 2nd unit handling the ball.

:lol I guess this is a benefit to completely giving up on players, when they simply do what they're capable of, you get to feel all shocked/surprised/happy/ecstatic. Which is fun. I, for one, never gave up on Neal (or Green for that matter), never didn't want him on the court, and wasn't at all surprised that he had the great game he did tonight. Of course, I'd argue that my approach is more epistemically virtuous, if you'll forgive the use of a technical term in this informal context, and it didn't decrease the immense enjoyment I felt as he hit shot after shot one fucking iota. Just different kinds of fandom I guess; probably comes down to differences in personality.

Same player as he has always been.

But he hit his shots tonight.

And we got the same bipolar fans who rise and fall just like the streaky player they hate/love.

If he stays on Miller every game he will be OK on D. Allen is a little tougher. He can't handle Chalmers, Wade or Cole without help.

Not sure why anyone owes the man an apology. Given the level of his defense, this is what he has to do. Gary's defense is finally less important when he scores 25 points. If he keeps going summer league on the Heat, I won't worry about him leaving Mike Miller open over and over and over and over again.

Green is getting a ton of credit (which he deserves) but neal sparked that blowout and when we started to let the heat back in it in the 4th neal drained another 3 to reignite us. Most of greens 3's just capped it off, though im taking nothing from him being that he is our best offensive player at the moment. I truly believe in Neal in moments like these.

If both guys continue to play like this, Danny Green will be finals MVP.

Not sure why anyone owes the man an apology. Given the level of his defense, this is what he has to do. Gary's defense is finally less important when he scores 25 points. If he keeps going summer league on the Heat, I won't worry about him leaving Mike Miller open over and over and over and over again.

This what is mind numbing about his D, Miller is the one guy who can't beat him off the dribble. So stay with him Gary whatcha say?

The departure of Stephen Jackson has been a blessing in disguise in so many ways, and game 3 revealed another huge blessing.. it opened up space for Neal at the 2 which in turn opened space for Joseph at the 1. I've been waiting for months hoping Pop would start playing around with these smaller lineups featuring Neal @ the 2... and Cojo/Patty at the 1. I thought they could be highly effective. Well game 3 appears to be proof that they are. I guess it took a game 2 collapse for Pop to finally start thinking outside the box .. and trying something out of his comfort zone.

The Return of Gary Neal. Neal's taking the same shots, but yesterday he made them. I think his injury really affected his shot and then later his confidence. Early on with the Spurs, when he got the ball, even two feet beyond the arc, I wanted him to shoot. He was that good. I always thought his stroke was the most pure, even better than Bonner or Green. I wouldn't be surprised if during the 9-10 days off before the start of the finals, him, Danny, Kawhi and Bonner shot hundreds if not thousands of threes and the coaching staff made the discovery that his shot and swagger were back....and just in time.

I admit that I, too, have been hard on Neal for his porous defense and costly turnovers. I will also admit that I wanted him off the roster after this year. Needless to say, his Game 3 performance was one for the ages. I'm eating crow and will humbly apologize. However, we now see how effective he can be if he's allowed to be what he really is - a fearless spot-up shooter. There's no need to force him into the role of backup PG.

Even on the heels of that monumental performance, I can't help but wonder if he's a still a luxury player the Spurs can afford to keep? After all, he's still an undersized backcourt player, with only a single skill.
