Q. How do you wrestle with the notion of wanting Tony to play but if you think give him one game, whatever happens in Game 4, give him that game and maybe you have him for Game 5, 6 and 7?
COACH GREGG POPOVICH: Can you repeat that?

Q. Good point. What I'm trying to ask is the temptation is to play him obviously.
COACH GREGG POPOVICH: Hit me, go ahead.

Q. I'm trying to figure out what I'm thinking. The temptation I would think is to mail in Game 4 and have him at full strength for 5, 6 and 7 as opposed to risking him for the full time. How much do you wrestle that?
COACH GREGG POPOVICH: I have to tell you that phrase "mail in Game 4"‑‑

Q. Good, right?
COACH GREGG POPOVICH: It confuses my whole brain. I don't think I can think past that comment. I would like to help you, but I don't know how to help you. You can come back to our coach's office and hit us. We'll be talking about all these sorts of things. Any ideas are welcome. I have no idea until I know how healthy he is tomorrow.

:lmao Pop was particularly salty in this one. "It confuses my whole brain" might be my new favorite English sentence.

That guy should have his press pass revoked. "Mail in game 4"?!?! It's the freakin Finals, moron, you don't mail in any games.

He should also know that a hamstring strain is not going to heal in a day or two, that kind of injury doesn't work like that, so as long as Parker is able to move reasonably he has to play and find a way to be effective.

Pop's derision of most questions asked by reporters is absolutely spot on - most of them have no idea what they're talking about and no idea how to ask a clear question. It seems like most of them actually just want to hear themselves talk more than anything.

You can feel the fear flowing in the reporters' bodies

They are just afraid to ask questions to Pop :lol

that has to be the most idiotic question any reporter has ever asked any coach.

That was a legit reporter asking that imbesilic question? I would expect such an isipid remark from a begginer or perhaps one of the few forum dunces that traverse these discussions. No wonder Popovich is such a stolid person.

Reporters have the column that they want to write in mind and ask questions aimed at getting players/coaches to give comments that fit into that column. Pop sees right through this whole process and loves needling reporters for not being able to at least disguise what they're really doing. One of the best recent examples is the "How amazing is it that.." question from earlier in the series.

I thought Pop did this to the reporter:

Reporter: Has Kawhi ever shown a lack of confidence ?

Pop: Kawhi has never spoken to me but on the court he never shows doubt.

Pop has been pretty damned verbose and almost understanding this time around. I can only imagine what old school Pop would have done if asked that stupid of a question.

Honestly, let's just sit him the remaining 4 games so he's at full strength for next season. No sense in risking long term health for something as minuscule as the Finals.

Pop actually had a chance to take a jab at Stern:

"You might be referring to the fact the regular season is way too long and I rest players and give the bench a chance to show what they can do. Well, we got fined for that once. So, you could probably imagine that the next fine for resting Parker (taken as mailing in the game), in a FINALS game would bankrupt this organization. It is very difficult to know when to rest players, who might be injured, when the possibility of a large fine looms."

But salty old Pop would know that would lead to many more questions. He is not as playful as Phil Jackson.

If Parker is able to play at a reasonable level, it makes absolutely no sense to keep him out in Game 4. If he plays, he may or may not aggravate his injury and miss time. If Pop sits him, he definitely misses time.

To me, it's akin to letting a guy play with a 5th foul. The worst-case scenario is, he picks up a sixth and has to sit, but that's only a possibility. If the coach chooses sits him, then it's a definite. I understand the strategy of taking that choice and saving your guy for crunch time, but...

This is crunch time. There are 2-4 games left in the season. Don't try to outsmart fate. Roll the dice, and let the players decide the outcome.

GNSF got their hands on some press credentials. There have been a few articles lately about Pop's prickliness with the media where the reporters have really been trying to shed a light on the real Pop, which is that away from the nuisance of an in game interview (or these kind of postseason pressers where outlets or writers that haven't paid the Spurs any attention all year show up) he's polite and eloquent and generous with his time. Secretly I've been hoping that Pop (assuming he was even aware such things were being written) would respond by doubling or even tripling down on the vitriol the first chance he got. This is a good start. Next step is to come over the desk and go after the guy like an out of control Jerry Springer guest. Bonus points if he's screaming: "YOU DON'T KNOW ME! YOU DON'T KNOW ME!" over and over as security restrains him.

That reporter should know... we almost beat the heat in miami this season without the big 4. We don't mail in games.

It's grade 1. No tear.

No way they even think about sitting Parker.
