SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs guard Tony Parker says his sore right hamstring can tear "any time now" heading into Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat.

Parker said Saturday he would take about 10 days to rest if this were the regular season. But with the series tied 2-all heading into San Antonio's final home game Sunday, the All-Star says, "If it gets a tear, that's life."

Parker strained the hamstring in a Game 3 blowout victory for the Spurs. He returned with a dazzling start in Game 4 on Thursday night, only to not score in the second half. Parker says he grew tired as the Heat pulled away to reclaim home-court advantage.

Despite the blunt assessment of his hamstring, Parker says he feels he's getting stronger.

I agree. But qualifying your performances by making sure the world knows you're injured, is soft and cowardly. It's the stuff of Dwyane Wade. It's a way to deflect if you play poorly, and it's a hero storyline if you play well. It's the Finals. He knows he's going to play. The world knows he's going to play. Just shut the hell up and play.

Sarcasm aside though, I don't know why they would come out and say this.. Expect Miami to set some HARD screens on Parker. I can see a few illegal screen calls tomorrow, to try to aggrevate that injury.

Unreal fortune for the cHeat yet again. Honestly, I don't wish injury on anybody but if the universe wants to restore order, can one of the big three suffer a similar injury. At least have a level fucking playing field out there. Those Miami based clinics are going to work nowadays.

He basically sounded more positive in the rest of the interview. He was saying there was just as big of a risk in it getting worse in game 5 as in game 4, so why not play. In other words, without ten days rest, this was about as good as he can expect.

Agreed with Jag, tbh..

I'm a big Parker fan and I've always defended him here, but he's acting like Kobe by using injuries as an excuse, tbh..I'm also tired of his flopping in this series, he looks like Kevin Martin out there at times with the head whips, tbh..

And?...I said the Nuggets were a threat, they're athletic & young, I said that before Gallo got injured & Barnes is better then Kawhi, he has a much more complete offensive game. Kawhi's defense & rebounding tho exceed Barnes'.

The main picture here is that the risk of a tear goes lower by the day, meaning he had a bigger risk on Thursday, when he came out not feeling worse, than he would coming into tomorrow's game. He just has to pace himself out there and he'll be fine.

SenorSpur
06-15-2013, 05:14 PM
In the second half of Game 4, it appeared that Parker forgot he had teammates on the perimeter that were wide open. He made his usual forays into the paint only to get knocked on his ass, without the benefit of a foul call. It's almost like he was doing to much to try and prove something. He needs to continue making plays for others when the defense gears up to shut down the paint.

Yea I had similar thoughts... you figure the Heat would respond strongly to the loss and maybe think that game 4 was inevitably going to the Heat, so resting Parker to be stronger for games 5 6 and maybe 7 would have been the.... Most Strategic Move to be made

BUT.

If you play Parker and win game 4... you have a 3-1 lead and that is commanding historically.

And going into halftime the gamble seemed to be paying off.

But the Spurs didn't have enough to withstand Miami's will, especially with the turnovers and a on fire Determined Dwayne Wade.

He mentioned the possibility of tearing when a stupid reporter asked him if in retrospect he should have sat out the last game. He just said, no two extra days of rest aren't going to make any difference (it would take at least 10 days rest to matter), it can tear any time, and if it tears, oh well.

Strange. Pop and the Spurs control everything, including media news. If TP said it, then he didn't say it as an absolute ... more like a possibility. That is the probable truth.
I have this memory of Pop telling TP that the media just wants to create a story.
TP tells Pop, I'm just trying to be more like you, in jest.
That was probably 2004 USVI Training Camp.

I would think every game would stop that time table. He said he needs about 10 days of rest to completely heal.

Since his injury on 6/11 he played on 6/13 and will play on 6/16 and again on 6/18 also possibly on 6/20. Thats possibly 4 games in 8 days following the injury. It wont heal playing on it, it would heal without doing basketball activities.

Thats a no go. Joseph can't play more than 10 minutes a game (he could but the drop-off would be to big in PG play). Manu isn't trust worthy as of now. Neal plays better as a combo switching off with Manu as the play maker. Neal would have to presumably play stretches without Manu (or TP) it would be very risky.

The best way to do it IMO is to have Parker play 15 minutes in 1st half playing the fist 7-8 minutes of the 1st quarter have Manu and Neal come in (assuming Diaw is starting)and go small with Duncan-Leonard,-Green-Ginobili-Neal. Playing Manu & Neal toghether from the 4 minute mark of the 1st to the 9 minute mark of the 2nd. Parker returns and plays to the 2 minute mark.

In the second half basically the same thing, but Parker plays out the final 9 minutes. That would about 32 minutes with about 15 minutes of real time rest before he returns.

06-15-2013, 09:05 PM
Parker is just stating the obvious. Any of our hamstrings could tear at any time. I would suspect that with any strain, the likelyhood raises. It's not like he's saying that he's so banged up that his hammy is gonna tear a minute into the game. He said he hopes to be at 100% for the game. That sounds fine to me.

LOL... his hamstring is already torn if he has a sprain, which he does.. When someone says "hamstring tear" they usually mean a complete tear of one of the three bands of the hamstring which would definitely end his season. That's what he's dealing with. No rest except for complete rest will help him at this point. Every time he plays it probably tears more and he'll be lucky if this series goes 3 more games not to have a complete tear. He needs a couple weeks of rest to not be at severe risk anymore.

I think the Spurs know they can't beat Miami giving full effort and are just laying down the pre-excuses now. Manu interviews, TP interviews, and Duncan post game interviews.

You really don't know what you are talking about. A muscle strain involves the muscle tissue. A sprain involves the tendon. It's not the same thing at all. A sprain isn't a worse term for a strain. It's two totally different issues. Grade 1 strain just means < 5% of the tissue is torn. Torn tissue puts you at significantly higher risk for more tearing of tissue.
