Two Tough Guys Leaving?
Wire Reports
Friday, July 15, 2005

Fox Sports online is reporting that the Spurs may lose two of their "tough guys" this summer.

According to a report by the network's Steve Alexander, "the Spurs may lose Glenn Robinson and Tony Massenburg to free agency, but as you can guess, they'll still vie for another championship this year, no problem."

This news comes on the heels of other insider reports that indicate the Spurs may be interested two other hard-nosed big men: Donyell Marshall- who is also being chased by the Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks- and Dale Davis who is said to be drawing interest from Cleveland, Philadelphia, New Jersey and Indiana.

Marshall is a free agent from Toronto. In 2003-04 he was the only player in the NBA to rank in the Top 25 in rebounds (9.9 rpg), blocks (1.51 bpg) and three-point field goal percentage (.403)

The Spurs are also signing Argentinean big man, Fabricio Oberto as soon as the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement is complete.

I like Donyell. A bigman that can shoot. Could he take some minutes at the backup SF? If he could only play PF the frontcourt would be too crowded. I doubt that he will sign for only 2.5 mio... He might get more somewhere else. Pop said in a Pop Show that he thinks that"Donyell is a fine player." They might me interested but I doubt it will happen...

The only way they will be able to land Marshall is in a sign and trade.

Davis should at most get the LLE. Though, if the Spurs wanted him badly enough they have $2.735 mil of the MLE to offer...

The only way either of those guys comes to South Texas is in the event of a trade. With Tim, Nazr, Rasho, Robert and Fabri in the front court, the Spurs don't just tack on one of these guys to the roster.

Yep. Which is why I am expecting a trade in the not too distant future. Davis makes sense if Rasho or Nazr is dealt for a 3 man.

Hmmm...

Starters
4 Duncan
5 Mohammed

Bench
3/4 Marshall
4 Horry
4/5 Oberto

That's a pretty flexible rotation.

Where did Rasho go?

...to Toronto for Marshall in a sign and trade.

Which is possible since they desperatly need a bigman.

Man that's insane..I wouldn't be paying Marshall Rasho's contract. Rasho is gonna be getting $6.7 million this year for the Spurs. Marshall isn't worth that.

Toronto is probably waiting to see if NOLA lowers its demands for Magloire, but Rasho/Marshall would be good for both teams.

No, Marshall's new contract just needs to be withen 20% of Rasho's.

...can be 75% of Rasho's 2005-06 salary of $6.76 mil. Not a problem.

Not 75%, but 80%

If contract B is 125% greater than contract A, contract A is 80% of contract B.

ChumpDumper

Ok, so it can start at about $5.25 million. Huge difference.

Yeah, bascially an MLE level deal. Is that something Marshall would settle for? I still think he's going to get more than that.

For some reason, he hasn't been able to get any more than that his last couple of contracts -- maybe some residual effect from his rep as a bit of a draft bust.

Rob Babcock is one of the weakest executives in sports so I don't think it's unrealistic to see them taking on Nesterovic's deal. I'd also much prefer Marshall to Abdur-Rahim, he'd be a much better fit in the Spurs system with his shooting touch away from the basket.

How's this for a close-out lineup
Duncan
Horry
Marshall
Ginobili
Barry

Notice I put Barry and not Parker.

With Bowen and Marshall on the court at the same time, they'd be fighting for that corner three position.

If the Spurs really want Marshall and Toronto is amenable to taking back Radoslav, I'm sure the Spurs won't have a problem giving Marshall some $.

Marcus Bryant
07-15-2005, 11:52 AM
Keep in mind, the Spurs currently have 4 years and $30 mil committed to Radoslav.

Marcus Bryant
07-15-2005, 12:01 PM
For example, if the Spurs gave Marshall 3 years and $20 mil, they would reduce their long term salary liability, even though that would mean a contract starting above the MLE.

Rumor has Marshall going to the Raptors.

Do you mean Bulls?

Marcus Bryant

It'll be interesting to see what money Marshall will sign for. From the Spurs' perspective, you're locked into Radoslav for 4 years/$30 mil. Wouldn't it be better to have Marshall for that amount? Also, I think you could get away with giving Marshall a shorter contract.

I really wonder what options are out there for Radoslav in a trade. Perhaps there is a franchise with cap room willing to absorb most of his deal or a team willing to send back a much shorter contract (ala the Knicks with Malik). If so, no doubt Holt Cat opts for that.

My bad... I meant Washington Wizards.

I like Marshall and a bigman rotation of Duncan, Mohammed, Horry, Oberto and Marshall is damn talented ... almost too much talent. That'd actually be the only thing that I'd worry about.

trading Rasho for Marshall would be akin to getting Ginobili in the last pick of the draft in 99.

I'd be ecstatic if the Spurs could get Marshall for Rasho and it be equal money.

Tim at ctr with Nazr and Obert obacking up, and Marshall with Horry, Duncan, and Oberto rotating? That would be SICK!

Yes please.

I'd love to see a Rasho for Marshall deal, the guy would fit in perfectly with the Spurs.
