Official thread. Anyone who's seen it post here.

I haven't seen it. Maybe I will if I'm dragged into it, and I don't have to pay, and I have 2 hours to waste.

The Austin American Statesman said it was eye candy, but Burton changed some things like giving Wonka's weird personality a background story (lame..) and also changed the ending.

They also said Depp's interpretation of Wonka sucked ass. He tries too hard and the character seems to have no real life.

I said it back in the day when this remake was on the horizon....Give me Gene Wilder as willy wonka any day of the week. Noone can outdo that performance....not even an actor as talented as Depp.

I've really been looking forward to it, and put absolutely ZERO stock in critic reviews. I've been known to be perfectly entertained by some really stupid shit.

I think I'll wait for the DVD on this one. Some things are meant to be watched in the privacy of your own home, with some illegal substances and a bottle of Crown.

no doubt. i was just throwing that in there cuz i read it while having lunch. I am party biased because im against remakes of any kind, and this remake craze is pissing me off more and more with every remake....BUT.....willy wonka, to me, is just one of those things that you should leave alone. Its a movie that is shown to kids on days when the teacher didn't feel like teaching. A movie shown in summer camp when the counselors didn't feel like giving a damn. A movie that has comforted us when we're bored, lost, or craving candy.
Its an awesome, magical movie. And there was nothing wrong with it. Nothing. The songs were bad ass (those are gone in the new version except an oompa song), the oompas were freaky, and wonka was weird but not gay.

My main reason for wanting to see it is to see if Depp can be even as remotely creepy as Wilder was.....because he's pretty damn dark.

And I LOVED that movie. I just got it on DVD a couple of months ago, after wearing out the VHS. :)

Man, I was against this remake from the get go, but I've come off if a bit. It's Burton, and he was more true to the book which came before the movie. That is my understanding.

I don't know if I'll watch it in theaters, but we shall see.

I can't wait to see it. I don't put a lot of stock into critics either, many of them trashed War of the Worlds and many of you thought it was great.

Johnny Depp is one of America's greatest actors.

Just like in "Finding Neverland" he has another brilliant performance.

He IS the Golden Ticket.

ugh...i hated the original and IT'S ALWAYS ON HBO, plus we have the DVD because my husband loves this movie. He can take the kids to see it.

However, I heart Johnny Depp

Just saw it. I hated it. Johnny was amazing in his role....but I think they portrayed him as FAR too creepy. Maybe it's because the original was one of my all-time favorites as a child, but I liked the more innocent version.

IMO, it sucked.

Willy Wonka is supposed to be a creepy character. If anybody has ready the book you would know. Gene Wilder played an okay Willy but not near as creepy as he should have been. I haven't seen the flick yet, but I think Depp will play it dark enough to give an accurate portrayal of the book.

Sort of OT

The European premiere will be tomorrow in a cinema just in front of the hotel I'm staying in. I actually have a very good view of the red carpet from my room.

So any hotties in this one? Should I invest in a telephoto lens? If I do will the snipers mistake my telephoto lens for a gun?

re-read my post and if you think the word "enthralled" describes my feelings about willy wonka then you are as illiterate and stupid as you are conservative

you seriously are putting your party to shame man, youre a freaking disgrace

and family matters is one of the greatest. if it was with white people trying to buy tahoes and support bush you would have loved it too.

I saw it yesterday. I normally don't see these kinds of movies, but my girl wanted to go. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought Depp did a good job. His portrayal of Wonka was very eccentric. He was incredibly snide to the kids and their parents, which was funny.

It's not for everyone, but Wonka fans should enjoy it if they keep an open mind.

Haven't seen it yet, but I intend to. Its being release in Brazil, I think, today. Maybe I'll check it out. The original was classic. But it'll be neat to see how better technology in cinematography will do.

I must say, I expected to dislike it, but I thought this movie was FANTASTIC.

Better than the original by a long shot. Really brought the books to life... Dahl and Burton are clearly kindred spirits.

His widow did an interview last night on BBC and said that Roald would have loved this film (since it is more true to the book) and specially Johnny Depp's performance.

I saw it today and loved it. Johnny is one of my favorite actors but I had heard from other Depp lovers that this performance hadn't really done it for them. I, too, loved the original and you can't escape the Wilder/Depp comparisons - I mean, whatever you think about the original, Wilder's performance is classic and so memorable. Johnny didn't do that bad at all! I loved the cannibalism joke most of all I think lol

I saw it tonight, and I was pleasantly surprised too. I was against it as well from the start. I would watch the trailers and just think it was gonna suck. But it really was a good film. How can you not love Johnny Depp. I loved him and the little boy who played Charlie in Finding Neverland and they again gave great performances in this one. The only thing that sucked were the oompa loompa songs, you can hardly understand what they are saying! Or at least I couldn't tell. But I would recommend it.

I saw it at the IMAX this week and highly recommend this version. Depp does a tremendous job as Willy Wonka, and Tim Burton is just twisted - the pink sheep sheering scene still has me cracking up.

Johnny Depp was awesome in films like Edward Scissorhands & Don Juan DeMarco...But in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...I had trouble getting past that Michael Jackson outfit & make up...

i am boycotting this movie as i feel the oompa loompas are not getting paid fair wages. :lol

actually, it's more for the reason that it won't score points with the wife (i.e. not a chick flick) and it does not look to have any of the action/comedy/sex genre combos that i see a movie for in the first place.

i've heard mixed reviews for the badnews bears, so i might consider that, although wifey wants to see 'must love dogs' which is sneak previewing tonight. the island also looks fun. :tu

This movie kicked ass, saw it twice in the theatre and a couple of times on DVD also, one of Burton's best efforts. I can't believe people were bashing this before they even saw it.

There are only a couple of Burton movies that I enjoyed more than this one. Honestly I can only name 2 movies of his that are undoubtedly better than this one, Beetlejuice and Big Fish, after that I would say Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Batman. I need to watch Sleepy Hallow again, I haven't watched that since I saw it in the theatre. I just watched Pee Wee's Big Adventure a month or so ago, hilariously great flick.
