Since that last buzzer, I've been living the movie Groundhog Day, except I don't get to re-live a whole day. I'm stuck with about a two-minute video loop. I put it aside, and the damned alarm goes off in my head, and I see the same crap plays over again. But unlike the movie, it isn't cute or funny, and there's no chance that some cosmic tumblers are ever going to fall into place, and turn out differently. I finally got an hour of crappy sleep, but I woke up and it was still Groundhog Day.
I know a bunch of you diehard fans are feeling the same thing. I finally got a personal omen that things really aren't over. Maybe it's dumb, but I suddenly feel better. But to understand it, you have to know the whole story:
I was in the game thread last night, while watching the game, and I started feeling like Nostradamus. People were jumping ship, saying it was over when we lost that 10 point lead. I called out a couple of things that needed to happen, and right after they happened. The Spurs were still down by 3, and I said that the Spurs would sink a 3-pointer, and the Heat's sphincters would pucker. Right then, Parker nailed his 3, and the Heat suddenly got tight and turned the ball over. Just like that, the Spurs were up by 5. And that's when I remembered that I had called the Spurs to win in 6 Games, with a score of 96 points. Then I really did feel like Nostradamus. All I needed was for the Spurs to score 2 more points, wrap up the Championship, and I win $1,000. And then Kawhi's free throw rattled out, leaving the Spurs with only 95 points, and Groundhog Day started.
Just a while ago, I looked up the "Win $1,000" thread, for predicting the outcome of the series. I guess I just wanted to wallow in my misery a little bit more. What I saw surprised the hell out of me. I had forgotten that I changed my mind at the last minute. My first guess had been Game 6 and 96 points, but I put off posting it for a couple of days. At the last minute, I changed my mind to Game 7, and 95 points. Last night, it looked like my opportunity was gone - but this morning I still have a chance. And if I still have a chance, so do the Spurs.
In fact, I'm going one step further than that, and call it for the omen that it is. I had been so intent on Game 6, 96 points, but at the last moment something changed my mind. This series was always destined to be an epic, 7-game affair. But it's going to be the Spurs standing on the trophy platform. And it's just as fitting that it will be a defensive effort that finally gives Timmy his fifth ring. The Spurs aren't going to have to have some heroic offensive output, because they are going to limit the Heat to 92 points. Everything that happened last night was just what had to happen. This will be a Finals that gets included every time they start talking about the Best Finals Of All Time, and it had to go 7 games.
Groundhog day is over for me. Just like that. I'ma sleep like a baby tonight.
