View Full Version : The "I Never Doubted My Spurs" Thread

This thread is reserved solely for posters who are hurting right now right now.
This thread is for my fellow real fans.
We collectively shed tears of despair last night, like true fans do after a heartbreaking loss.
And what a heartbreak it was....
We felt like wilting away and dying.
We initially tried to point the fingers out of desperation, but quickly realized it was a pointless thing to do.
We knew the scoreboard read their way, regardless of who, what, where, when and why it happened.
We lost sleep at night, we tossed and turned....
We lost productivity today, unable to focus on anything without thinking about what happened...
We've avoided any and all material/replays/highlights/articles from last night like the plague.
We all stood still, hoping the thoughts just go away from our mind... but there they remained... until now
We have to let it go, and the Spurs have to let it go.
Because deep down, we never doubted our Spurs, never doubted the heart of our championship team.
We've been with Timmy, Pop, Tony and Manu for years, countless years.
We've shed tears of happiness and tears of joy.
We've witnessed multiple championships and celebrated them all, more so each time.
We also witnessed things most fans never have to endure...
We've seen 0.4. We've seen the Dirk foul. And now the Allen 3.
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of reasons to be down right now, a lot of reasons to jump the cliff...
But this thread is for the ones who've been there through thick and thin, and still stuck through regardless.
This has been one of the most exciting seasons I've ever witnessed as a Spurs fan, LOBT tomorrow night or not
I've loved seeing our boys play, fighting till the end with all they've got.
I've loved seeing Timmy killin' it in his twilight years.
I've loved seeing Parker's rise to MVP candidate status.
I've loved seeing our young role-players rise far and beyond expectations.
I've loved it all
We may win tomorrow. We may lose.
We may be the happiest people on the planet
We may be the most crushed after what we've endured and how close we got.
But we will be there.
We will be cheering for our boys as they give everything they have one last time for us this season.
There is no room for fair weather fans in here.
No room for people who just want to point the finger and b*tch and moan about who did what wrong.
No room for those who have already written us off.
There is only room for those that can put the past where it belongs, and cheer their hearts out for our beloved team.
Tonight I won't be sulking in misery anymore.
Tonight I won't be losing any more sleep over what happened.
Tonight I will be at peace.
Tomorrow I won't be down and out, skipping the game or miserably awaiting a blowout loss.
Tomorrow I'll be there... in full Spurs spirit
Tomorrow I'll be hoping, praying and cheering with everything I have
Cheering for the team that I never doubted would give its all for the win
Cheering for the team I knew would give its all for the loyal fans that support them.
Tomorrow I'll be watching legends do what legends do
Tomorrow I'll be watching Tim, Tony, Manu and Co. putting their hearts on the court and letting it all hang, as they always have
Tomorrow I'll be there as our Spurs give anything and everything they have left to give, as I never doubted they would.
Tomorrow I'll be there.
Where will you be?

Here's the thing.
I know that most of us are actual Spurs fans, minus the few who just like to jump on the momentum bandwagon and have little else to contribute to the board other than their incessant negativity and cliffjumping. As a result, I know that heartbreaking losses can be tough to swallow. I've been loyal to the Spurs organization since I was old enough to read. I've never jumped ship, and in my teenage years - the Golden Oughts of the Duncan Era - I was so invested that the 2004 and 2006 losses felt like the death of a family member.
However, it's important to take perspective. This is a game. It's a game played by a group of millionaires for the entertainment of the masses. Most players in the modern NBA have ZERO LOYALTY to the teams for which they play. We are, at the end of it all, cheering on a bunch of overpaid athletes to don colors chosen for us by corporate entities. There is no penalty for a team playing poorly, and there is only one reward for a team playing well. These games have no bearing on our lives, our futures, or anything else. I think it's important to remember that what we do is submit ourselves to the bought loyalty of a franchise.
The Spurs are unique in that they don't simply buy big talent to produce instant championships. They meticulously build their teams around strong pieces, and they strive to uphold the fundamentals of a team game. That's noble, but not miraculous. Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and many others played their entire careers in Spurs uniforms, and did great things for their city. Those players are unique. Those are the ones who deserve to take their victories when they've earned the opportunity. Yet, even they remain entertainers.
Game 6 was a bummer because we as fans were about to be handed the right to watch our favorite team celebrate their hard work paying off, only to have it snatched away. It sucks, for sure, but it shouldn't ruin anybody's week. We're spoiled to the point that we struggle to remember just how much fun this playoff run has been, and that pushing Stern's Gods to a Game 7 do-or-die is an accomplishment that should be cherished. I feel for those on the board who abandon the journey the moment the road gets bumpy, because I genuinely wonder what their lives are truly missing that forces their inability to remain rational and supportive. I can't even remember how many times in the last month alone we've let ourselves believe that the Spurs were done, not having the talent and execution to overcome youthful, talented teams playing in the heat of the moment. They were supposed to somehow struggle against the Lakers, they were cooked after Game 2 against the Warriors and again after Game 4, they weren't supposed to beat the Grizzlies, they were done after Games 2 and 4 against Miami and they're apparently done now. Every time we have bet the house on the Spurs and come up at a loss we've decided that we as fans are somehow being let down. It's a reality of American sports fans of Huxley proportions. We are treated to an entire season of ups and downs, excitement and tension, all for our own WILLING AMUSEMENT, and when all of that still isn't enough, we behave like we've been robbed of everything.
I want the Spurs to win Game 7. I sincerely hope they do, because as a fan it's what we all want. But even if they don't, I'll still be glad that I got to see this team of players, some of whom have done wonderful things for the city of San Antonio and for the game of basketball, compete for a title. I'll watch as much of Game 7 as my job will permit tomorrow, because if nothing else, we've been given just one more chance to watch our team play, and Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili - despite all of his struggles - all deserve to be given the support of their fans one last time. They're millionaires, yes, and they're just playing a game. But they're also members of the Spurs community, and the city, and they've remained a foundation for the franchise over their careers when they could have pursued more money or better markets. They've done plenty to advance the franchise, not themselves. That kind of dedication to a community of fans deserves more than cliff jumping fucktards questioning their resolve.
My gut says the Heat win Game 7 because history says they will. My heart hopes it's the Spurs hoisting the trophy, and my heart will support the Spurs either way.

I've already jumped off the cliff. I might find myself tomorrow trying to climb back up depending on how Game 7 goes. You'll can call me a bandwagon or cliff diver but believe me, I've witnessed everything the OP said. That is why I didn't jump the gun when the Spurs were up by 5 points with 28 seconds to go. Unfortunately my little brother barely became a Spurs fan like three years so he inevitably got his heart broken after declaring the Spurs "Champions" with 28 seconds to go. I warned him but he didn't listen. He got pissed at me because I told him that he jinx the Spurs. He said "fuck you... it's not my fault, blame this shit on Pop and Manu." I just said sure.

I actually think G pop is going to review the tape and see just how incompetent Manu was last night and bench him at the first sign of trouble in game 7, Bonner style.

I think most of the comments stem from pure disappointment and frustration. Deep down, as fans, there is no reason we shouldn't believe in our team. Its the main reason we even watch sports to begin with. The Spurs will be ready for game 7, I think the fans should be as well.

Thanks for the great post. Heartbroke or not we'll all be there to support our guys even if it's not meant to be our year.
and one more thing for Horry, I don't wanna sound corny or anything but at least for me, being a fan of the spurs is much more than just cheering for a sports team. Spurs have that extra values which they taught me and inflicted on my personal life. loyalty, humbleness, sportsmanship, lack of ego, teamwork, strong mentality and maybe above all being an uncompromised undisputed and everlasting winners. Tim duncan is one of a very few characters in worldwide sports today.
And the drive of his teammates to win this for him is just as inpiring as sports could get.
Those are only some of the reasons that I think we all wanted that win so much yesterday, especially against a team that represents the exact opposite of all this. that's why we're so crushed after we felt we're already there, 30 seconds away from doing the impossible and being the happiest people alive. It might not be in proportions but it actually means THAT much for us, and I'm glad to see how dedicated Spurs fans are for their team. It only proves my point.
I Believe.

Our motto is to pound the rock. No matter what happened yesterday it was still one loss. Game 7 is a chance of redemption for us. A second chance. A second chance for taking care of the ball. A second chance for missed free throws. A second chance for rebounds. One game where anything can happen and anyone can be the difference.
If we limit our errors and play spurs ball for 48 minutes then we ought to be where we want to be.
Believe.
Plus guys, let's be real, any one of us would've taken a game 7 vs Miami in the finals at the beginning of the season. Considering game 6 for what it is, as a loss, it doesn't matter if we lost by a lot or a little, its still a loss. We didnt have that game if we did we would have won.
Tomorrow we can be excited that we actually have a chance to win it all.
Believe.

I couldnt sleep at all last night, thinking how we were 1 FT, 1 rebound, 1 possession away from #5. I'm still at shock every time i think about it. Watching the post game and practice interviews, and seeing the players look like they already gave up, makes it 100x harder to believe that our Spurs can pull it off.
But, I still, and will always believe in this team. If theres one team that can upset history and the defending champs, its our Spurs. EVERYTHING that has happened before in this season, does NOT have any meaning. The only thing that matters, is GAME 7. One game, one chance, one goal. We can do this. LET'S do this. :lobt2:
Believe. Go. Spurs. Go.

I haven't jumped off the cliff, and I've always been on board with the team all the way.
I can't help but feel that we lost out best chance last night. We had that title. It was ours. Up 5 with less than a minute left. . .it was over. All we had to do was hit one more free throw or collect a rebound at the end. They couldn't. . .and the game went to the Heat.
I don't doubt that the Spurs are capable of winning game 7, because they are. I just have my worries about the performances of our players, and worries that the guys who played well won't be able to replicate it while the guy who played absolutely terrible is more likely to do it again based on his recent track record than he is to snap out of it.
Duncan had one of his best games in a long time. That was the legendary closeout performance. I don't think he can repeat that again. The Heat will be on him harder now like they were in the 2nd half. I do have confidence in him being capable of a solid game though, but the worrying part comes in to where he won't be able to carry us as much, while I expect others (Manu) to not pick up the slack at all.
Parker's the wild card. If he can go berserk, we may have a chance. We're going to have to really over rely on him and hope his hamstring can handle it and that he can stay hot. I'm putting a lot of faith in Tony and hoping he will come through for us. If there's ANY game ever that we need him to go crazy, it's NOW.
Ginobili was extremely awful. I have never seen a player go from rock bottom for weeks to the top of the mountain and right back to rock bottom again. It's almost a bad thing he had such a good game in game 5 because now Pop's stuck between a rock and a hard place. If Manu is the worst Spur in the first half again, can you really bench him? You have to ride him out even though he had nothing all night. My biggest worry is that our ship will sink because Manu keeps shooting to hull full of holes with all the turnovers while everyone else is battling their hearts out for that win while he's just mentally unraveling and demoralizing the team with all his fuckups.. He's been bad more often than good, so the odds are, tomorrow he will suck again, forcing the rest of the team to have to not only pick up the slack for him but to have to try and neutralize his negative impact.
Splitter hasn't played well all series. He can do better, but I don't know what to expect besides fouls and getting rejected.
Green seems to have been solved. He can still contribute on D', but we aren't getting those threes. . .man it's gonna hurt a lot.
Neal is too risky to use too much, but we may have to gamble on Neal having a hot game and not get burned too much on D' if our offense isn't getting much production.
Diaw's weakness of not being a good shooter still hurts. You want him out there for the D' but I almost feel like we need some scoring (at a nice %) from Diaw if we're going to win it. Honestly, Diaw's probably going to get leaned on. I hope he can handle it.
Leonard, like Diaw, I think is going to have to step up and give us some efficient offense. They're going to have to get the points Manu likely isn't. He played hard last night, but we're gonna need just a little more.
Popovich: Please do not put our worst 5 players of the night on the floor at the same time against the Heat's most deadly lineup of the series again. Also, do not remove Duncan when we need stops again. I don't care if they have 5 3pt shooters in. Do everything else you do though Pop.
Basically, I worry the team is going to be shellshocked from the loss while the Heat are going to be fired up with excitement that they're one win away. They have all the momentum and home court advantage while one of our big 3 was the worst player on the court last night. I don't think we have enough with Ginobili sucking it up like this.
As always I'm hoping they win and will be watching every second from start to finish, but my confidence in a win is way down now. I feel like we're playing with only 2 of our big 3.

The idea of "never doubting" a team is really stupid, IMO. I try to watch the game as objectively as possible and try to make judgements based on those observations. Its undeniable that the Heat are a very talented team and that they stand a strong chance of winning tonight. I do not believe the Spurs are 100% to win tonight and that means I obviously doubt the Spurs. How does that make me some sort of "fake" (or not '"real") fan.
The only thing that is "required" of a fan is to cheer on their team. I do that every game and I root for all the players (even the ones that fucking piss me off like Splitter). But this whole blind faith bullshit is just stupid, IMO. Its so weird to see people pat themselves on the back for blind faith. Yay we throw out logic yay!!!!
