Scouting Report


After a quiet first two years at Gonzaga and redshirting in 2011-12, Olynyk burst on to the scene last season, leading the Bulldogs to a school-record 32 wins and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The reigning West Coast Conference player of the year averaged 17.8 points on 62.9 percent shooting and 7.3 rebounds, earning consensus first-team All-America honors. Olynyk thrives with his back to the basket and already has an array of post moves in his arsenal. Scouts love his ability to absorb contact and finish around the rim, and his impressive mid-range game should also come in handy at the next level. While some believe Olynyk is the best offensive big man available, it remains to be seen how much he has to offer on the defensive end. Olynyk may have hurt his stock with a poor showing at the NBA combine, where he finished dead last in the three-quarter-court sprint with a time of 3.59 seconds. He was also one of just four players to post a maximum vertical jump under 30 inches (29.5) and only completed five bench press reps - a huge disappointment for someone of his size. While Olynyk may not be as athletic as some of the other players in his class, he makes up for it with a high basketball IQ. Olynyk is still a lock to hear his name called in the first round, but his chances of being a lottery pick don't look good at this point.
