View Full Version : Is there anyway we could woo Yao Ming out of retirement?

I know this may sound a little farfetched, but please hear me out before you call me an idiot. Is there any chance – whatsoever, even if it’s only like 35% – that we could woo Yao Ming out of retirement and sign him to a 1-year deal with a player’s option (for a second year and with a no-trade clause)?

I know he’s been retired for a couple of years… but my god… he’s only 32 years old! Hakeem and Kareem (Lew Alcindor, which was Jabbar’s birth name) both peaked at 32 years old. In his prime, Yao was one of best centers in the league, averaging 25.0 points per game. He had great size at 7’6”, but at the same time he wasn’t clumsy and had great stamina. And unlike other ridiculously tall bigs, he actually had some muscle and could bang down low.

I think he would be great paired next to Duncan (twin towers part 2?). His defensive presence would be felt greatly. Not to mention, Yao has a nice touch from outside. I’m tired of the Kurt Thomas’s, the McDyess’s, and the Dejuan Blairs... can we actually get a big that’s actually big?

Who would be better at managing his minutes than the great Gregg Popovich? In Houston, the Rockets relied too much on him offensively and ran him into the ground. He won’t even be the 2nd or 3rd option here in San Antonio. We just need him to play hard defense for 25-35 minutes a game.

Money really isn’t an issue here… because he’s only the most famous person in China. Plus, he played 8 seasons (I think in Houston) so the transition to San Antonio would be easy. Think about his legacy if he were to come here and win a title with us. Let Tiago walk… make it happen RC!

lol. Can he even walk? Such a shame, he was a very talented player.

He retired due to chronic injuries. "Managing minutes" only mitigates chronic injuries, it doesn't solve them or cure them.

Maybe if Yao had come to the Spurs six or seven years ago, he'd still be in the league. Fact is, he's not. And he won't be coming back.

Bynum will probably demand a max contact, but Oden is a really possiblity. I've heard from multiple sources that the Spurs are seriously pursuing him hard.

If Yao Ming wasn't Chinese he would have been acknowledged as a complete bust. The guy could never even lead Houston past the first round. Only when he was injured did they advance. And only when he was injured did the Rockets win 22 straight. He was an absolute stiff. I was laughing out loud when he retired and people were talking about putting him in the Hall of Fame. If you put Ming in, then Shawn Bradley is surely going to have to follow.

Let Tiago walk, bring Yao from the dead and pair him with sadfrog Duncan. It's a good plan.

Apparently someone doesn't know Yao's health history. His foot bones are so bad they break every year right after the all-star game. That's why he retired. His feet could only take so many stress fractures.

He will be a lock to make the ALL Star Game, though.

That's because the Rockets relied on him too much. That's where Pop comes in. We can manage his minutes and sit him on road games and back to backs.

lol...

and this thread is not so terrible. i just don't think yao would come. and if he did, his body wouldn't hold up. even with the spurs micro-managed minutes.

Lets get Bill Russell while we're at it. Bet he could still fill in 8-12 min a game.

Yao Ming was another Shawn Bradley at best.

I wonder whether we can convince Earl Boykins to come to the Spurs and replace Tiago. That would be a major steal in this FA season.

Is there anyway we could bring El Gigante back from the dead, cure his diabetes, fix his knees, and give him David Robinson's athleticism? I know it's a long shot but if there's even a .35% chance we should try.

Yao is only 32 years old. There's no way he could even be possibly finished. Pop will manage his minutes. He just need him to rebound and defend. No offensive plays designed or set for him (just on put backs).
