RIP Marcin Gortat rumor

Probably never alive to begin with considering the only source flip flopping.

But it's certainly not bad news - Splitter is a highly efficient big on both ends who played a major role in solving the teams issues with twin tower opponents (while still having some teams that he matches up poorly against). He's probably the best lone big on the market that the team has a legit shot at.

That said, need to make sure that any deal with him leaves room for improvements elsewhere. Splitter >>> Pachulia coming off ACL. But going into next season, I'd rather have Zaza + AK47 than Splitter + Casspi (or similar mediocre swingman).

Glad to hear it, means one less question mark (when he signs) and we'll have a better idea of the cap space Spurs have to work with. plus maybe they'll get manu's out of the way once they're done with Tiago's contract.

BatManu20
07-02-2013, 02:34 PM
I haven't heard of one single other team showing interest in Splitter, other than Portland who can't afford him now anyways. The Spurs need to use this lack of interest to get a bargain on his contract. Don't just give him a 3 yr/$27 million deal just because.

Seems like what their plans are. Still need a shot creator though..

I think Nando could fill that role if he gets minutes and practices his mid range game this summer. Make them respect your shot, opens up lanes, bounce passes actually make it to their intended recipient. And he's already under contract.

This seems about right, Spurs won't gamble and they won't let a player walk away. Tiago will get paid and probably were no other parties interested or were really in contention. Parties rumored probably trying to get Spurs to eat up cap so they can't offer deals to anyone.. So we'll just have the same returning team as last year and pray Tim/Tony can have another monster year.

Yeah, depending on how it escalates, 5/$45 isn't necessarily much more than 3/$25 if there are option years.

Tiago was dropped from the Brazilian NT yesterday. Because of his uncertain contract situation, Brazil could not get the required insurance. One possibility is that Tiago is trying to get this thing done soon so he can still make it to the NT.

Not as bad as it sounds for current cap:

With the yearly increases for a Bird FA, this deal will start closer to 7M for 2013-2014. The bigger numbers will hit in years 4 & 5, when the team is rebuilding around Kawhi anyways.

Not really a bad deal, considering the current state of big men and what Tiago could probably get from other teams (I expected him to get $10mil+).
