Sonics offer head coaching job to Bob Weiss
Tacoma, WA (Sports Network) - The Seattle SuperSonics have apparently offered their head coaching job to Bob Weiss.

According to the Tacoma News-Tribune, an official announcement could come as early as Monday. The team was just waiting for Weiss to sign the deal.

Weiss, an original member of the Sonics in 1967, has been an assistant in Seattle since 1994 and has already been endorsed by several key players on the team, including star Ray Allen.

The 63-year-old Weiss has had three prior coaching stints in the NBA. From 1986-88 Weiss coached the San Antonio Spurs to a 59-105 mark before leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 124-122 record from 1990 to 1993. Weiss also guided the Los Angeles Clippers to a 27-55 mark during the 1993-94 campaign.

Weiss, who began his coaching career as an assistant with the San Diego Clippers in 1977, will replace Nate McMillian, who bolted the Emerald City unexpectedly in early July to accept the head coaching vacancy in Portland.

cheap.

Thats the one word needed for the Starfucks owner.

What a horrible move. This guy could coach the Clippers, the Hawks, nor the SPurs.

Are you KIDDING me???

Thanks, this hands Denver the Northwest division pretty much.

Actually, I read that the players are the ones who went to management asking for Weiss.

I'm glad Weiss got it.

He's a class guy who deserved the job.

I've interviewed him a couple of times, and I think he's the best guy for the job.

Nice guy

But I think the Sonics will not be a factor this season

The guy has never been a winner at this level ... and hasn't been a head coach for ten-plus years. Good luck to the Sonics, they'll need it.

I don't understand how coaches like this who routinly have bad records and get fired continue to get recycled around the league. And it's not just the NBA who does this.

Why do teams in any sport recycle coaches?

As far as I know, Lambeer wanted the job. I think he would have been a better fit. Weiss basically got the job because baby ray ray got his way by approving of the coach

Places them firmly in the middle of the pack. Great coaches are important for great teams. Good coaches for good teams. Mediocre teams need mediocre coaches, and I'm not so sure he's mediocre.

Oh, and Weiss ain't bad. He led the ATL to a winning record, and those Spurs teams he coached were the most talent-free in the history of the franchise, the dregs of our history.
