Is Denmon really going to play on the summer league team again? I thought we cut him last year and were through with him.
It's a shame though because I really thought he should have been given a chance... I mean he's undersized and we have better players at his position and all but still. The Spurs knew that and they still drafted him.
Otherwise I'm really looking forward to see Baynes step up in the summer league. Ever since watching the summer Olympics this past year and watching every game Australia played (because of Patty Mills) I desperately wanted him a part of this team. And boom, it happened, and then he didn't get any valuable playing time in the playoffs :(
And one more thing. Everyone is talking about what were going to do at the backup SF position. Well Hello! We drafted Deshaun Thomas for a reason. He's not 6'7 like he's listed (neither is Kawhi. In truth they're both about 6'5) but he's a lights out 3 point shooter. If he can get his weight down, and learn how to play defense, then I really like what he can bring to this team. But again...like Denmon, he's got to be given a chance.

They didn't cut Denmon because they never signed him. They just sent him to Europe for the year. They plan to do the same thing with Thomas.

Doesn't matter what he does, he's got no shot to make the team whatsoever.

Yeah, this may be RC doing the UT coach Barnes a solid for one of his former players.

Pittman is garbage and he couldn't even sniff any meaningful minutes in Miami even when they were rail thin in the paint.

He, on the other hand, is far from rail thin.

I liked Pittman when he was at UT. He's got the size but never developed in Miami. Chip and Chad have their jobs to do with him. Thought he had a weight issue. Hopefully he has his head on straight. Very raw talent, with a great upside.

kawhi is actually 6'6" with out shoes and over 6'7" with shoes.
thomas is 6'5" with out shoes and 6'7 with shoes.
so by NBA standards they are both 6'7"

That would be my guess. Even though I can't really think of a specific benefit to it, staying on good terms with the guy coaching a major college program in the same city that your d-league team is in just seems like something you should do.
Sorry was referring to Baynes...
Gotcha. I don't think it matters all that much what Baynes does in summer league either. For him it's about how he does in training camp & preseason.

If he works out for us we have a big man coach for him too. Probably reason there trying him out in summer league to see if he worth developing.

Pretty good prospect for summer league, tbh.
But the Spurs are suddenly deeeep at center (Duncan, Splitter, Baynes, Teddy Pendergrass) so I doubt he has a chance to make the team. Could be a draw in Austin, though.

Dexter Pittman is a poor man's Dejuan Blair. How stupid has this offseason been?

If Thomas knocks down his 3's he's a lock, especially since there is no backup SF.
He's got more rings than Kawhi, Danny, and Tiago combined :lmao

It's a summer league invite. You can't get too picky with those guys. Virtually none of them ever pan out (with the rare exception of say, Gary Neal). Summer League is more about getting your draft picks and young players some court time, not finding talent.

He's around Baynes' level tbh. Can't play without fouling out and just a big body. He should kill the summer league like he did the D league though. He just can't make the jump to the next level. He also didn't fit in the Heat's system.

Durand Scott says he was not very good at first, and there were some rough times growing up. He lost his father at 15.
"It was very hard at nights to hear him crying in the room," Faithlyn Scott says.
But with the guidance of high school and college coaches and support from family and the community, Scott excelled and has made it this far.
"It's just another opportunity to go out there and do the thing you love," he says.
Now Durand Scott aims for a permanent spot in the NBA, accomplishing a dream for him and one for his late father.
"His last words were, 'I hope he makes it to the NBA,'" Faithlyn Scott says.

He also didn't fit in the Heat's system.
I was wondering about this, his position is one of the Heat's biggest weaknesses and yet he couldn't find consistent playing time. On top of that, el Heat had already shown a willingness to insert and trust newer players into their system such as Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole. This is to say that Pittman (who is young and should have lots of upside) was so bad he couldn't find time with Miami. What exactly was Miami looking for in a big man that Pittman couldn't be given a chance?
What's even more surprising to me is that with his upside, wouldn't that make him more tempting like a franchise like the Heat to invest in him?
I feel like I am missing something from this picture.

Worse finisher and slower than Joel Anthony. I feel like he makes some bad decisions when he switches/helps. He can get post position pretty well, but he just isn't a good enough finisher atm to do much with it. Decent enough D one on one if he didn't foul so much. He just doesn't really strike me as athletic or energetic. Just big.
He might have got play time if he was at his current level back in 2010 when the bigs were the corpse of Big z, Dampier and Joel Anthony. With the 2013 Heat they just needed some D out of their center, mobility and the ability to make dump offs from Lebron/Wade. Pittman couldn't give you the last 2.

Thanks for the insightful response jimbo, it sounds like we're better off with Baynes.
On top of that, it doesn't seem wise to me to have two bigs on the team that are still in early stages of learning the system. I think he'll have to succeed in the SL and then in their system at the D-league before moving forward with him.

No, but he won't miss them all when they count either. I guarantee he can play bad defense and not rebound like Bonner though. I think the handling and passing abilities are about the same. My dog can jump much higher and the Spurs would be in a lot of highlight clips. I mean, he is a dog.
