I have never understood this. Anyone have an explanation especially someone who fits this description?

If you're really curious then actually watch this.

hq1k2qmT1W4

Those aren't kids in the audience.

Now add the fact you were just a little kid watching Gorgeous George, Baron Leoni, Lou Thesz, Fred Blassic, Don Eagle (others) with granny, you sitting on the floor beside her rocker and her old spit can, she diipped snuff.

As you mature and figure the business out, the behind the scenes politics ..yep..the reality of it all is...interesting.

What I want to know is how can an adult stomach punk or rap? How can anyone smoke?

Yeah, I don't get why grown men watch wrestling either. I watched as a kid, but just grew out of it. The storyline aspect of things, and the terrible acting showed itself upon aging. All of a sudden it was just terrible. Once the end of middle school came around, wrestling no longer had appeal.

Be proud of your 11K posts in how ever many months because as long as you have that... you'll have something to be proud of.

Bruno was in my opinion the number two rassler ever...

1.Lou Thesz
2.Bruno Sammartino
3."Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers
4.Hulk Hogan
5."Nature Boy"Ric Flair
6.Verne Gagne
7.Killer Kowalski
8.Dick the Brusier
9."Superstar" Billy Graham
10.Gorgeous George

Bruno was strong but pales in comparision to Bill Kazmeir, Ken Patera, Ted Arcidi and Mark Henry.

Never heard of Lou Thesz Born 1916...Sheesh how old are you? He does have an impressive resume…Thesz was drafted into the army in 1944 despite a legitimate injury to his knee and multiple medical deferments. He was placed into medic training and eventually teaching hand to hand combat defense for medics

Signature moves
Bridging belly to back suplex
Backbreaker submission
Belly to back waist-lock suplex
With those Signature moves The guy would be the number one draw in Los Angeles if he was around today…

It's been nearly ten years since I watched with any regularity but once upon a time I did fit that description. There's a lot of reasons that went into why I watched.

1. Humor. I can't speak for anyone who would take this stuff all that seriously in this day and age. But there were some guys who could crack me up on the mic back then. What was usually the source of the most laughs were the guys who really tried to pull off serious emotions out there, along with horrible wrestlers who could be counted on to botch things in the ring. (Well, except for the ones where they blew things and people got hurt. I'm not sadistic.)

2. Nostalgia. There are entire TV networks built around providing this to its audience. It was nice to be able to sit back and be reminded of a time where the most important thing in my mind was whether the Hart Foundation would be able to beat the Nasty Boys (They weren't. Fucking Jimmy Hart.) Towards that I know as a college student it was nice to have a couple hours a week set aside where I could put my brain into neutral and just relax. It's the same principle that makes shows like Jersey Shore, Big Brother, and the various Real Housewives shows. Not every piece of entertainment needs to challenge you. In fact it's for the best that some of it doesn't even try.

3. Respect for the craft. When I was 15, about the time I probably should have outgrown the whole thing altogether, I read Have a Nice Day by Mick Foley. I encourage anyone to read it. It's a quick and entertaining read even if you don't give a shit about wrestling. And if you have any interest in the subject at all it's a nice chronicle of how the game changed from the 80s heading into the new millennium, as well as covering the parts of it that will probably never change at all. As a guy who was doing high school theater at the time it gave me a new layer of appreciation for all the work that goes in to making it happen at the highest levels, from production to the actual in ring work. The live, no off-season, show must go on aspect of it all was intriguing. And I can think of a lot of things I would rather do than watch a soccer match, but even then it's just about impossible not to have immense respect for the years, even decades of work that it takes those guys to get to where they are.

Ultimately for me it got to the point where it was too repetitive week in and week out to bother carving out two hours of free time that was increasingly at a premium as I grew up. I won't begrudge anyone who just can't get into it, or see past the most cartoonish aspects of it (and there are many of those), but I wouldn't immediately assume that anyone who watches it must be brain damaged either.

I guess I respectfully disagree. Storylines, and choreographed routines lend itself to comparisons to other physical activities that are graded by judges. Such as, diving, gymnastics etc. Because, they are graded more so on execution of physical movement, as opposed to actual competition. Although with these activities there are no scripted storylines. The closest wrestling comes to a sport, would be fixed boxing matches. And everyone knows how people feel about fixed boxing matches.

Is bodybuilding a sport? Is dance a sport? What if I were a pro sparring partner and my job was to never hurt the star? I'm not a pro athlete?

I could be into judo and never do anything competitive.

Try being a non athlete and a pro rassler.

It doesn't matter if the outcome is predetermined or not, it takes athletes to be involved. It is a sport because of the athleticism involved.

Try being a pro rassler without training for it.

Answering the OP, it's a nostalgic thing for a lot of males. Either they grew up watching it with the family, or they had a best friend who enjoyed watching it together. It is simply another form of entertainment, but it's appeal has been around since man has existed. Humans enjoy violence, scripted or not.

I built an extension on to my deck by the pool this weekend. It was hot, hard work and crawling around under the existing deck while carrying lumber and tools took a fair amount of athleticism. My neighbor, a former college football player helped. I played HS ball and still keep in shape. Therefore, deck building is a sport.

Although, when looking up the definition of sport, I'm not so sure that deck building is not actually a sport.

sport (spôrt, sprt)
n.
1.
a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
b. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation.

History of professional wrestling

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Professional wrestling (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Professional_wrestling), a sport (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Sport) and performing art (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Performing_arts), is a popular form of entertainment in North America (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/North_America), Latin America (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Latin_America), Europe (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Europe), and Japan (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Japan). Beginning in small, unorganized groups in the 1880s, wrestling's popularity boomed when independent enthusiasts unified and their media outlets grew in number. Professional wrestling became an international phenomenon in the 1980s with the expansion of the World Wrestling Federation (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/WWE). Throughout the 1990s, professional wrestling achieved highs in both viewership and financial success during a time of fierce competition among competing promotions (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Professional_wrestling_promotion), such as World Wrestling Federation (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/WWE), World Championship Wrestling (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/World_Championship_Wrestling) and Extreme Championship Wrestling (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Extreme_Championship_Wrestling)

So if you golf alone it's not a sport?

Here's where you say....you're competing against yourself. So are the rasslers if they wanna stay in the business.

Golf is a skill, just like bowling. It's a two fold aspect at minimum, with athleticism and competition. Self competition LOL

Wrestling is COMPLETE and UTTER TRASH. It died when WCW went under and WW"E" lost the competitive edge.

I loved Wrestling at one point, and I still enjoy watching wrestling from the 90's and early 00's. ECW was and will always be the best Wrestling the US has ever seen tbh.

Wrong again.

Check the TV rankings, tell me what you see.

So you have seen...

WWA from LA
CWA from Memphis
AWA from the midwest
NWA
Mid South...Texas, Oklahoma. Louisiana
World Class...Texas
Stampede...Canada

ECW wouldn't make a zit on their ass. No stars!!!!!!!!!

The WWWF/WWF/WWE and WCW on a whole other level.

Lol, fuck ratings. Wrestling SUCKS. This is coming from a hardcore wrestling fan for most of my life.

And don't even start with stars. I already went over the list of stars from ECW with you in one of the other wrestling threads. If these guys weren't stars then why did WCW/WWF raid all of their talent and sign them to lucrative deals?

Story lines are so bad these days, the characters are so childish, it's hard to watch. Honestly watching Lucha or Puroresu is the only way to go because they have almost no storyline and focus on a solid match with stiff moves that are much more dangerous than American moves..I've decided to bless you with some of the most dangerous moves from Japan over the years..

Great stuff there.

Who was the biggest star to come out of ECW?

The best time for rasslin' was in the 80's. Big time shows all over the nation. Competition for that rasslin' dollar.

Yes McMahon has fucked things up but to those just getting into it they don't know that. Guys like us can go one of two ways, become an old scrooge like you or set your DVR and fast forward past all the shit to get to the good stuff like me.

You didn't really address my previous post. But, it's no big deal. Agree to disagree. But I still can't accept a choreographed, storyline physical event as sport, no matter how athletic said participants are. Collegiate and Olympic wrestling, sure. But not the, entertainment "Pro" Wrestling.

Tough to call. Benoit, Mike Awesome, RVD, Eddy Guerrero all got pushed to WWE or WCW Champion. Then you get the Dudleys who were the top team for quite a while. Raven, Dean Malenko, Sabu, Rhyno, Tajiri, Sandman all had relative success in primetime as well.

It's not a sport. When you put that word aside and watch thinking from a risk of a botched move perspective, it becomes easier to appreciate it more. Some of these moves from the more talented wrestlers can be pretty crazy to have to take. Necks get broken pretty commonly in wrestling.

See if you can get this...

Pro wrestling is very competitive. Everyone out there is trying to steal the show get the biggest...pop....out shine the others. Everyone wants to do the best job, yep just like at work. So we do have competition now add the obvious athletic skill and it's a sport

Sport refers to the exercise of skill in a physical activity (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Physical_activity) which is often competitve (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Competition), and carried on for its intrinsic enjoyment, including that of its spectators.[1] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-sportaccord-1)[2] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-council-2)

Nope, you proved yourself wrong, thanks. WWE/WCW signed these guys after their stint in ECW. CMLL and New Japan is a start, but if you refer to my original post it said "stars". I really don't think you are gonna consider Pegasus Kid and Black Tiger "stars", right?
