I agree. I think he would have played for Phil. He seemed to hate the system the lakers ran last season.

Yes, he wished for more involvement on offense and Phil's system would accommodate. The Lakers knew putting in Phil would have Dwight stay, but they did not and that brings up a question: Did the Jim Buss not want Dwight or did he simply not want to look Phil in the eyes whilst picturing his sister being pounded by a man with a bad pelvis?

Probably not, but it may have made it a much tougher decision for Dwight. May have depended if Phil's triangle actually worked with Howard. If there was some noticeable success, even if they lose, maybe Dwight considers. But D'antoni is just a convenient excuse for Dwight to use now. He didn't like playing with Kobe. He didn't like the atmosphere, environment, the pressure, or the fans of LA. He didn't like the fact that it wasn't an easy, story book fairytale all the way to a championship. If the Lakers hired Phil but still struggled to develop the appropriate team chemistry, Dwight still may have tucked tail and run. It's abundantly clear that even if Dwight wasn't fond of D'antoni or his system, he had plenty of other reasons why he didn't want to stay with the Lakers.

Dwight would still be a Laker and Kobe would still have two achilles tbh.

Stephen A on First Take said he called Dwight after he made his decision and asked him about if he had stayed with Phil on board and Dwight had said "yes".

No one wants to play for MDA, tbh. If you hadn't played for him he might sound like a good dude and an offensive genius, but obviously it's the opposite.

you just don't know with Howard. The system he was in was horrible and it took MDA 3/4 of the season before he says maybe we should use our bigs more. Because Howard is so wishy washy, it's hard to tell. This shouldn't even be an issue. Soon as Phil skated, B Shaw should have moved right in.
