View Full Version : Why did the Spurs sign Beli instead of Gary Neal?
Feels like it was a very cold move especially since Beli is not an upgrade, Gary has been awesome during his first 3 years.
If you're gonna be cold like that you don't resign Manu to a pity contract.
I think SJax wasn't completely wrong when he talked about Pop being very partial when it came to the big 3 but SJax as we know was talking specifically about Manu who he didn't think deserved the playing time he was getting (and history proved him right and Pop as wrong as one can be).
I'm shocked tbh, they got rid of the biggest set of balls on the team... And had no problem overpaying a complete tosb and a vagina. There's no way the team got better.

The difference between Gary Neal and Belineli is negligible, tbh..they are both very flawed players that play atrocious defense and aren't particularly efficient..
It's already been reported that the Spurs expected Neal's price range to be higher than they were willing to go IIRC..

Which seems weird to me if they used a chunk of the midlevel on Marco, because signing Gary with Bird rights still leaves them their full MLE.

Beli is a slight upgrade imo but certainly not much of one. Guess Pop got tired watching Neal play well 1 out of every 5 games and decided to roll the dice on another Euro.

With the Spurs trying to set themselves up for a max contract offer in 2015, Belinelli's willingness to take a 2 year deal could be another factor in the decision. Belinelli's already made some decent NBA cash, Neal hasn't.

It was repeated on this board 1,000x that whatever Neal brought offensively he gave up 2x as much on defense. For the type of money he would be commanding after a solid Finals, it became pretty apparent the Spurs needed to move in quick and get his replacement.
For the type of money MB is getting, he is overall the better player.

Why did the Spurs sign Beli instead of Gary Neal with it
Belinelli will be a small ball small forward who backs up Leonard. Neal could not do that.

........because Belinelli being one inch taller than Neal makes all the difference.

Beli can shoot, dribble and has court awareness.
Neal can shoot.

Neal's career shooting percentages are damn near identical to Belinelli's, so if you don't think Neal can shoot......

Belinili can at least guard a stationary object. I don't think Neal can do that.

Beli is a better defender, a little bigger (he can play some SF if needed, Neal can't) and cheaper.

They picked Beli cuz he's Italian
The Spurs are like the NBA's foreign nationals team tbh
We have 3 french fries
2 shrimp on the barby's
2 americans from da souf
a Virgin Islander
a Canadian
The rest are from the states, of which only 3 actually play so might as well swap out the worst of the ones that play for the Italian tbh
also explains why the rush for AK47, just to have a Russian on board

So now since AK signed with Nets, Gary is a LOCK to come back!!

Exactly he can create off the dribble and get to the rim a suprisingly rare and valuable nba skill. All Neal can create off the dribble is an occasional shot.
