great games from all the prospects/projects we are watching closely. thomas, baynes, and de colo had nice showings.
Thomas looks good, he should get some nice preseason minutes.

I wonder how much can you do as far as increasing foot speed and lateral speed?
Baynes is a beast and I wish they would go to him a little bit more.

^ yep, d and everything else
I don't know if Thomas is as inept to leave a guy with 1 shoe on open.

How is Thomas on defense? What is his ceiling there? If he has any defensive potential and willing to work hard to improve on that end, then I am very interested. He already seems pretty good on offense, but he is going to have to play defense to be on the Spurs.
I've been waiting a long time for the Spurs to move back to elite defense, and last season was a great step in that direction. Unfortunately, I don't want players that are hopeless defensively with no potential on that end of the court.

CoJo is the backup PG. You have to be stupid to suggest otherwise.

19 pts and 15 rbs for Baynes. Great game.

And Baynes gets the post game interview after the game. Great game for Baynes.

Baynes setting a summer-league high with 15 boards. 19 points too...he looked great out there.
The backup PG situation is confusing. Seems like Joseph/De Colo both aren't consistent enough to be solid full-time backup point guards.

Baynes will get some much needed work in at camp and the preseason, guy has some moves and is a nice rebounder/defender..

let thomas solve the backup SF problem and focus on the backup PG issue.
not sure if he is the answer, but cojo is the closest thing we've got so far. wouldn't mind seeing a trade for that role, but i don't even know who would be a good fit that spurs FO can potentially get?

Joseph has to have all but locked up the back up spot behind Parker.

Liked Denmon. I still think he can be a 15th man in this league. De Colo had a nice game, which should help his trade value. His body language was much better tonight, but I have to see what it looks like when he's not playing well to see if he's had an epiphany. Baynes played like we should expect him to do against a bean pole. He certainly looked every bit as promising as he looked in spots last season. Joseph was quiet tonight, but I thought he did all right. I'm glad he got most of second half off. Richards sulked on the bench -- not a good thing for the coaches to see. And Pittman looked good, but I don't get why he's getting so many minutes right now.
Good game. By my count, the Spurs have 12 points now. Let's hope that makes for a good seed.

Spurs just have to pick a backup PG and stick with him, whether it's CoJo or Nando (I'd go with CoJo tbh), and trade the other. If the choice fails, move on. All else fails Neal as backup (:lmao)...

He is not Kawhi by far but he can guard spot up shooters just not fast guys but he is a better shooter then Kawhi.
Yeah we still don't have a PG that I would want getting minutes in a Finals match.

Thomas looks pretty damn limited defensively tbh. He's got good size and strength but he will have some serious issues guarding NBA SF's. Doesn't look like he has the quickness. I like his offense and scoring and I think he can be a good situational role player against teams who roll out a player he can stay in front of.
I thought Baynes played fantastic tonight. Guy needs to get minutes next season.

Baynes and Thomas :tu
Spurs have serious questions at the backup PG. Seems like nobody can consistently put together good minutes. Cory plays well for a week then throws up a dud and then De Colo plays awful one night and then comes out with a fantastic performance. Not sure either of these guys are the answer there long term.
You know what is funny, even if you look at good role players (cough*JR Smith*cough*Jamal Crawford*) they are very up and down. Most rotation players that are role players that aren't considered elite role players have a ton of up's and down's so the guys you mentioned are no different. Sure we would like more consistency, but they show the ability to do very well at times.

They were the #3 defense during the regular season last year and #1 in the playoffs IIRC. That's pretty damn elite already.

You're right. I think the Spurs will find themselves with a pg they don't trust again though in the playoffs if they keep rolling them out by committee behind Parker all season. The above poster was right when he said we still don't have another PG who I would trust in a finals series.

Thomas is so slow. He can't defend the break at all. I don't know how he's going to make it on the perimeter. But the team has to try to get him to play there. All this small-ball four stuff isn't doing him any good if they view him as Leonard's long-term backup.

i'll have to read through this thread but it was fun watching this game. props for people on here keeping others posted. Thomas, imho, is a steal. Not sure what his ceiling is, but the guy looks so natural scoring, similar to Neal.
good seeing Baynes rebound the shit out of it and De Colo had a good game.

I'm not sure his future spot is at the NBA 3 position. Looks more like a stretch 4 who can kind of fill Bonner's role. This is why he dropped so far.

I see a Ryan Gomez resemblance in terms of style of play.

I just don't see it, honestly. He'll get abused by every big that goes up against him as of yet. He's pretty strong, but his standing reach is barely longer than Green. (By the way, I didn't know Green measured out at 6-7 in shoes. That's pretty impressive.) If that's true, he'll be really situational in the NBA -- even more so that Bonner is.

No. Neal's problem's on defense are height and awareness. He has the foot speed to get back on the break (he was often there at rim). He just can't do anything to stop the opposing player from scoring.

LOL! Thomas is shorter than Blair. He can't defend PFs.

They were the #3 defense during the regular season last year and #1 in the playoffs IIRC. That's pretty damn elite already.
I was talking about the season as a whole. I know we played pretty good defense in the playoffs, but that is because the starters played more minutes and they turned it up a notch or two because it was the playoffs. I want to see the return of the defense now for the whole season. I want everyone on the team playing tough defense for the whole of the season to build that consistency for the playoffs.
We definitely were not the best defensive team for a lot of the season. I'd say we were barely pushing top 5 for most of the season defensively. It's all about consistency and doing it night in and night out.

The inconsistency on D came mostly due to injuries tbh. After Tony went down the Spurs began to sputter on both sides of the ball. When the team was fully healthy or close, they were Top 5 in both offense and defense.

I disagree, the Spurs were nowhere near the elite defense during the season that I am looking for. Even when they were healthy during the regular season, they didn't play elite defense. They were pushing top 5 at around number 4-5. There was a pretty decent sized gap IMO between the top 2 defensive teams and the Spurs throughout the regular season.
Having said that, I was much, much more pleased with their defense compared to the last 4 seasons before this one.

The two teams that were ahead of the Spurs all season were the Pacers and Grizz, both of whom were absolutely abysmal on offense. If the Spurs maintain an elite offense while playing that level of D, that's spectacular.

in defense of the guy he seems to be working on his shot (shaky for now) to fit. Maybe finally realized he needs a 3 to fit in.

How fast is Paul Pierce? Thomas game kind of remind me of his; slow and awkward.... Successful none the less.

Not too concerned with Thomas' defense here. I think he can be useful for regular season minutes behind Leonard, and I'm 95% sure he won't sniff the playoffs rotation in his first season (unless he turns into some sort of star somehow or Kawhi is hurt). I see Green filling that role unless the Spurs make a move to get some serviceable vet SF.

Green filled in admirably at SF during the Finals, doing a good enough job on LeBron (especially on transition. wtf was that). with belinelli able to step in the at the 2 without giving up much size like Neal does, it allows Green to more comfortably slide to the 3 spot

If it's against the Heat, I'd rather Manu not suit up at all.

Yes. When someone is absolutely sure of a statement, they say they are Totally BeHind it. If they don't say "tbh", it means they're not as positive about it, tbh.

I'm sure Pop feels different. It doesn't matter if Thomas scores at a Durant level if he defends like a turnstile and gives it all back. Chances are HUGE that he will rarely even get shots, so you HAVE to lean into defense.

That what I was thinking. Pierce is a slow for an All-star caliber SF. But he is so good b/c he just knows how to score the basketball. Little head fake here, a little shoulder fake there. Most analyst, including myself thought Thomas was the steal of the draft at 58. He certainly has backed it up the first 3 games of this Summer League.
Like i said, he was the only player I believe in the draft that shot over 50% from midrange jumpers, and he certainly has but that stat on displayed thus far.
