Cavaliers add Marshall
1:17 p.m.

By Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter

The Cavaliers continued to bolster their roster by reaching an agreement with free agent power forward Donyell Marshall on Tuesday.

Marshall, according to sources, will sign a four-year deal worth between $20 and $25 million. Marshall, who played in Toronto last season, averages 12.4 points and 7.3 rebounds over his 11-year career.

Marshall, guard Larry Hughes and center Zydrunas Ilgauskas are expected to officially sign free agent contracts with the Cavaliers on Friday, the earliest date free agents can sign with teams.

Ferry is doing a great job so far. LeBron has to be excited about this. All they need now is a solid PG.

There's alot of teams getting a whole lot better between this off-season and the draft.

They don't have much money left after signing Marshall. I wonder what they'll do now.

Won't they play Hughes at PG, most likely?

Or maybe he and James will share point duties.

Aren't they still going after Marko Jaric? Can't they still afford him?

No. They only had ~$6M left and it looks like they just spent it on Marshall.

Larry Hughes
Lebron James
Donyell Marshall
Zydrunas Ilgauskas

not a bad group of guys to build your team around. The Cavs improved quite a bit this offseason, they're gonna be good.

Maybe. But as of this article this morning, they still wanted a starting PG.

They are in the market for a starting point guard, they want to upgrade the power forward position, and they still need overall depth. The problem is, after officially signing center Zydrunas Ilgauskas and guard Larry Hughes on Friday, they'll only have between $6 million and $8 million (depending on where the salary cap falls) to get all of that accomplished.

with all these moves this off season can they actually afford James next off season?

Now that they have Marshall, it will be interesting to see if they try for some sort of trade involving Gooden.

Excellent signing. It should certainly be enough to put them into the playoffs now.

The Cavs are addressing key needs in their 8-man rotation.

that's true. but what teams have gotten worse?
i think the clippers and sonics have, the wizards, the grizzlies (although hakim warrick was a great pick, imo), the suns (if they lose JJ), the bulls (if they lose curry),

Luke Jackson's back injury seems to have healed. He had a good Summer League showing and the Cavs team went 6-0.

I guess the plan for Cleveland is to now try to move Gooden for a starting point or for a trade excemption from a team like Atlanta once they strike out again in free agency and have tons of leftover capspace which could be used to take Gooden without having to send somebody back to Cleveland. Assuming Cleveland used up their remaining caproom on Marshall, all they now have to work with are minimum salary slots.

If you're Ferry do you "rent-a-Payton" for a two year deal with team option for the second year?

He's a point forward - they still run smaller guards.

dont they still have snow...a decent pg

Kori Ellis

Last time I check, JMac is not a bad PG. He has one of the best Assists to Turnover ratio in the league. He had a bad year last year overally though. However Eric Snow, Larry Hughes, Jeff McInnis, and Lebron can all play some point.

McInnis is an unrestricted free agent. And they aren't talking about re-signing him.

Sense
07-19-2005, 10:09 PM
Yeah, I'm also thinking he won't be coming back.... him and snow aren't pretty happy in CLE.

Sense
07-19-2005, 10:11 PM
Yeah, you are right. But Snow is good. They should get Payton for a million. I think he would do it.

I don't like Snow, and getting Payton would be a bad move for them..

They are too old.

Great.....

Another solid player going to a nonchampionship team. Meanwhile, the Spurs are signing unproven foreigners...

Nice.

We do need to continue to improve, because other teams are going to be better next year.

If we keep the team we have right now, we improved (except we need a backup 3.

I really hope we get Gdog...I'm glad we have not heard any news about him going anywhere else. I have a bad feeling about our being able to afford him though.

But NOT Detroit. Possibly Miami if they are lucky enough to have a healthy 2 star duo...

If Spurs are healthy they will easily be the favorites.

They are also looking at possibly bringing back Taylor. So maybe the roster will be close to this:

Z, Varejao, rookie
Marshall, Traylor
James, Newble, Jackson
Hughes, Pavlovic
PG(in trade for Gooden), Snow

yeah well those "unproved foreigners" will be the ones carrying the trophy and wearing the rings next season, because the Cavs and a few of the other teams with big additions over the offseason wont get much further than they did this season

Spurs, Pistons, Heat, Pacers, Suns are the fav for next season
