'Creed': Sylvester Stallone And Michael B. Jordan To Star In 'Rocky' Spin-Off

Chalk this up in the “wha—seriously?” column: the Rocky franchise is getting a spin-off film. A spin-off film about Apollo Creed’s grandson. A spin-off film about Apollo Creed’s grandson starring Michael B. Jordan, directed by Jordan’s Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler…and produced and co-starring Sylvester Stallone (http://screencrave.com/tag/sylvester-stallone/), who will once again reprise his role of underdog southpaw Rocky Balboa, despite saying goodbye to the character in 2006’s Rocky Balboa.
According to /Film (http://www.slashfilm.com/fruitvale-pair-michael-b-jordan-and-ryan-coogler-to-make-rocky-spinoff-creed/), Coogler announced that Creed has long been his dream project; further, when Stallone was approached with the idea, he “loved it.” And now, Stallone will return to the franchise to star and produce, and several “other people involved in the original films” will be coming with him.
As far as the plot goes, Creed will concern the story of former heavyweight champion (and onetime Rocky rival turned best friend) Apollo Creed’s grandson, as played by Jordan. The young Creed is an upper class rich kid living off his deceased grandfather’s wealth. However, instead of wanting to live the spoiled life, he rebels against his parent’s wishes and requests that Rocky train him to be a boxer.
It all sounds like pretty boilerplate Rocky movie stuff, but hey, it can’t be worse than Rocky V, right?

Jul 24 (TheWrap.com) - Ryan Coogler and his "Fruitvale Station" star Michael B. Jordan are reteaming for "Creed," a spinoff of the "Rocky" franchise that will focus on the grandson of Apollo Creed, an individual close to the project told TheWrap.
"Creed" will be the sophomore effort for the director, whose profile rocketed in Park City this January when "Fruitvale Station" won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance.
Jordan will play the grandson of Creed, Rocky Balboa's nemesis in the 1976 original.
Sylvester Stallone is said to be reprising his "Rocky" role but won't be back in the ring -- at least not competitively. He'll take on the role of Creed's trainer. He will also produce, along with Kevin King and original "Rocky" producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff.
The plot is still sketchy, but it will center on Jordan, who essentially overcomes a privileged childhood -- his famous boxing grandfather dies in "Rocky 4" but left a fortune behind -- to discover his own pugilistic prowess. He seeks a trainer in Balboa, who's not too keen on getting back into the fight game.

The intention is for Jordan to play the grandson of Apollo Creed (played in the early movies by Carl Weathers (http://www.joblo.com/movie-celebrity-database/carl-weathers)). Raised in an upper-crust home thanks to the ring riches earned by his grandfather, the young man doesn’t have to box and his family doesn’t want him to. Yet, he has the natural instinct and gifts and potential that made his grandfather the heavyweight champion until Rocky Balboa took his crown in 1979′s Rocky II. Creed’s grandson needs a mentor and turns to Balboa, who is out of boxing completely and not eager to return.
Balboa was Creed’s greatest opponent and later his best friend until that fateful moment when Balboa heeded Creed’s wishes and didn’t stop the fight against the Soviet fighter Drago (played by Dolph Lungdren in 1985′s Rocky IV) before the giant delivered what proved to be a fatal beating.

One of those films that will either be great, or a fucking disaster. No middle ground with this subject, imo.

And the niggas look rather similar imho, it wouldn't surprise me if they were really grandfather and grandson tbh.
and agree such films can either be tremendous or downright trashy, and the director usually makes the game-deciding difference.

Rocky V was such an obvious Mike Tyson storyline. Pretty much all of the Rocky movies after the original are abortions though. They're guilty pleasures of mine, but never could I defend them as good movies.
