View Full Version : Why Your Team Sucks 2013: Jacksonville Jaguars

Some people are fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars. This 2013 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group.

http://deadspin.com/why-your-team-sucks-2013-jacksonville-jaguars-909081897

Why your team sucks: When it comes to writing up these previews, I always make sure to save the most popular, most interesting teams for the end of the preseason. This is why the Jags get to go first. They should have been the London Rippers by now. Instead, until at least 2030, they will remain one of the NFL's filler teams. Without revenue sharing, this franchise would be worth $3, and that's being generous. They have no quarterback; they have no pass rush; their best player (Justin Blackmon) is already under suspension; and worst of all, they have no reason for being. Interest in the Jaguars is wholly subsidized by the existence of fantasy football. They're like corn, only corn is occasionally useful.
RELATED
Frankly, they should have a player kill someone. Why let the Patriots hog all the murderous players when you could draft them all yourself and make a real BRAND out of it? Then you could have Jason Whitlock be like, "Those Jags are nothing but common thugs!" and then your team would be worth paying attention to. Then you'd have some MOXIE, by God! Anyway, they're doomed. Remember, this is a team that's considering putting the Red Zone Channel (http://deadspin.com/jaguars-may-show-redzone-channel-on-their-stadium-video-645249602) on their video board to get people to come to the stadium. They might as well show a white flag rippling in the wind for three straight hours instead.
Why your team doesn't suck: New uniforms! SO VERY TIGHT.
In Seattle, Bradley helped build one of the more imposing secondaries in football, which became the rock of the league's No. 3 overall defense in 2012. He doesn't have anywhere near that level of talent in Jacksonville. But hey, you might as well give him time. It's not like you northern Floridians have anything to do for the next 17 years anyway. Just go out, do some meth, get caught trying to bang your neighbor's ferret, go to prison, and come back in a couple years to see if Bradley's made any progress. At the very least, Gabbert will have been euthanized by then.

The seven worst Jaguars ever:
1. Matt Jones. Please note that no team will ever draft a mobile white QB, convert him into a wideout, and have it work. Ever. Stop dreaming about it happening, white fanboys.
2. Gabbert
3. Reggie Williams
4. Gene Smith. Gave $14 million guaranteed to Laurent Robinson. Jesus.
5. R. Jay Soward. You guys should really stop drafting receivers. Even Matt Millen thinks you suck at drafting wideouts.
6. Marcedes Lewis
7. S-Type

At least the S-Type starts, runs and occasionally can pass, all while hauling around a spare tire. Yesterday 4:22pm (http://deadspin.com/at-least-the-s-type-starts-runs-and-occasionally-can-p-913790697)

The Titans one is even better.

Your quarterback: Jake Locker. FUN FACT: By the time you're finished reading this sentence, poor Jake will have already partially torn the cartilage in his throwing shoulder. He'll be out three weeks. And by three, I mean six. It's a shame because I was looking forward to watching Jake barely complete half his passes. He's like Vince Young, only not as much fun and far less willing to take his shirt off.

Why your team sucks: Let's talk about Bud Adams for a moment, because Bud Adams doesn't get nearly enough credit for being a horrible, shitty old man.

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18v2drmivc6wrjpg/ku-medium.jpg

At least Leon Hess had the courtesy to die. Titans fans get no such comfort. Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones have hogged the "meddlesome owner" spotlight for so long that it's easy to overlook ol' Bud, who interferes in far more of his team's business than a living cadaver ought to. You never want to see your team run by a dude who looks like a 15-term senator who bangs the help. Bud forced Vince Young on Jeff Fisher, then he fired Jeff Fisher, and now the Titans are eons removed from their best years. Think about that: the Jeff Fisher years represent the APEX of this team's existence. They're never gonna get the chance to lose a Super Bowl by a single yard ever again. They are locked and loaded into 6-10 for the next two decades, especially with a defense this atrocious.

ESPN.com will dedicate a blogger to each and every NFL team. Makes sense—fans can't get enough football. Well, most fans. From Poynter's story on the announcement: (http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/mediawire/219510/espn-confirms-it-will-hire-bloggers-to-cover-every-nfl-team/)

ESPN.com Editor-in-Chief Patrick Stiegman looked at the site’s data for how much time users spent on the top 100 teams it covered. Of the 32 teams at the top of that list, 31 were NFL teams.
The Jacksonville Jaguars were the only NFL team that didn’t make that list, King said, but he said ESPN decided to cover all the teams anyway.

LOL butthurt espn. Like it or not the true die hard Jag fans are growing and getting stronger. The fact that the Jags posted a number average of over 64,000 per game is very telling. You know what's even better and a great indicator of a strong fanbase growing. The fact that this average figure occurred in one of the most horrendous, grotesque excuses for a football team that went 2-14 and the fans still showed up. All they need is a decent QB because the young talent is getting better and better. The arrow is pointing up and soon the wins will follow. Then the numbers will be over the top. At that point espn can still suck a big hard cock! First and foremost I'm a Spurs fan since '86. I'm used to espn shitting on small market teams. This is truly amusing to me and doesn't even move the fucking needle. As a matter of fact, keep it up. I welcome it. Were talking Jaguars football baby! As far as I'm concerned with the amount of time you have spent talking about them, dare I say they might be your AFC team? You know what it might very well be.

The NFL’s First Openly Gay Player
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert shocked the sports world Monday morning when he announced that on top of throwing NFL passes, he likes throwing it in guys’ asses.
At a press conference held outside of The Boot Rack Saloon, the former top-ten draft pick broke the news to a handful of reporters, saying, ”It’s been a really difficult struggle for me these last two years having to take the field with my teammates and knowing deep down in my heart that I have absolutely no talent. Plus, I’m gay.”
Veteran Jaguars center Brad Meester told reporters that Gabbert’s announcement explained a lot.
“I remember in training camp two years ago, Blaine came up to the line behind me and tried to take the snap with his penis instead of his hands, and I just thought it was a rookie mistake,” the 14-year pro out of Northern Iowa said. “I just told him, ‘Hey, we don’t do that at this level,’ and we worked on snapping the ball into his hands instead. But now that he says he’s gay, well, I feel like the rookie.”
All eyes will be on Jacksonville to see how the league, team, and fans react to this stunning news. Jaguars beat writer Ryan O’Halloran told The DUD that he thinks the league will wait to throw their support behind a gay athlete who, unlike Gabbert, will still be in the league next year.
Asked whether or not he was shocked by Gabbert’s announcement, Jack Goff, five-time champion of the “Bros Before Hos” fantasy football league out Waukesha, Wisconsin, told us that he’s not surprised by the Gabbert news.
“I mean, a 58% completion rate last year, only 9 touchdowns to 6 picks, and a QB rating of 77.4 is a pretty gay stat line,” Goff said from his resident stool at Sporties. “Plus, he plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars. It doesn’t get any gayer than that.”
Gabbert told reporters that he’ll probably write a book about his struggles both on and off the field because he feels that “gay people read a lot.”

Is Mark Brunell still the greatest qb in Baguar history?

Mark Brunell is loved by the original Jag fans because he was a guy that they acquired from the packers. Seemingly came out of no where to lead the team to an explosive offense under Tom Coughlin. He was a white mobile QB that at times could be compared to a poor Steve Young. Mark Brunell's marquis moment is when he led the Jags to an amazing come back win against the Denver Broncos in the 96 playoffs. John Elway him self proclaimed that to be the biggest loss of his career. lol. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-top-ten/09000d5d8111b706/Top-Ten-Biggest-Upsets-1996-Jaguars

Having said all that, I was not a fan of the Jags at the time and had no emotional investment in Brunell. By the time I became a season ticket holder in 2000, Brunell sustained a knee injury that took away his mobility and relegated him to a one dimensional pocket passer. Add the salary cap hell that Coughlin got the Jags into and all the great players they had became cap casualties. They were banking on a Superbowl but didn't cash in. The team in my opinion has never recovered from that situation.

Having said all of that though, imho David Garrard was the Jaguars best QB in their short history so far. Brunell had a better team built around him compared to what Garrard had to work with there is a huge disparity. Yet Garrard was able to take the Jags to the Playoffs in 05 and 07. Garrard basically accomplished more with less.

You know, I'd like to be a homer and say they go 8-8 but not with the schedule they have. Plus below average QB and new coaching regime. I think the WR corps is going to be above average but unfortunately it will be inconsistent because of the QB play. Look for Cecil Shorts III (if healthy) to be the first Jags WR with a 1000 yard season since Jimmy Smith and MJD to have a decent bounce back season. With a new defense scheme and young fast talent on both sides of the field I think they can accomplish between 4 to 6 wins this year. One win will be a shocker though.

Could be a good chance for that to happen. No one would be surprised either. But I'll take it though. Plenty of good qb prospects in next year's draft. Jags are still a couple good drafts from being competitive. Either way there are individual players to watch on this team that could be a part of a good core in the future. Keep an eye on Ace Sanders. Ace will be a slot or backup wideout. But he's electric on punt returns. The guy has great moves and is sneaky fast.

Clowney would be insane good to get. But the Jags need a QB fast or the momentum of new ownership/coaching staff and youth movement and quality drafts will fade soon. The Jags need to take a serious look at Bridgewater or Aaron Murray. I'm intrigued by Murray because of his pedigree and not to mention that last Georgia QB puts up video game numbers. It would be a wet dream to have that type of QB production. The Jags have a stable of wr's on tap already.

I normally avoid laying out my personal stuff on the internets, but hell, I'm reeling so much right now, I'm asking everyone/anyone in sight what to do.

I had some nukes dropped on me this past week regarding the wife, which after looking back the past 1-2 years I should have seen it and I realize I am a fucking idiot. I've mulled over everything a billion times and there's no where to go but to get a divorce.

I have a 7 year old and some have already told me I need to go all out to get full custody. Any other practical advice? Step 1? Step 2?

She told me she was going to co-workers to pick up some lesson plans or something last night.

After being gone for 3 hours, I called to see what time she'd be back. Heard her cell phone ring downstairs. I scrolled thru it to get her coworkers number to call her and let her know she left her phone.

Several new text messages up so I read them.

Not good.

I read the older ones.

Even worse.

I had a coworker tell me that the phone company might release all the actual messages to me on a hard copy. Can anyone verify?

Also, has anyone had any experiences with private investigators?

.... But a better plan would be to invest in better players. The most puzzling off-season non-move for the Jags remains their snotty rejection of* Tim Tebow.

I am not on the Tebow Bandwagon. He remains a work in progress and a project as a quarterback. But if there was a franchise that needed some of the other mojo that Tebow brings _ including a faithful fan base that thinks he can do no wrong _ would have been a perfect fit.

Not to mention the hometown hero making a return to Florida.Instead, Tebow is with the New England Patriots, one of the most successful and storied franchises in the NFL. Maybe he should consider himself lucky the Jags ignored him.The Jags now have a new GM, a new coach, new uniforms and will have the largest scoreboard in the NFL in 2014."We needed a rebuild from the ground up," owner Shad Khan said recently.*

Tebow would have been the perfect start.

Charles was (mostly) held in check, Alex Smith was averaging 5 yards an attempt. Your defense wasn't the problem out there, but 3 and outs, constantly losing the field position battle, and no room for MJD is what did you in. honestly looked a lot like the Jamarcus raiders, but without Lechler to boot it 80 yards out of your own end zone :lol

I will answer this for you because you don't seem like a parroting troll faggot cuck. Denver was the lightning in a bottle team for Tebow. He had a legit top defense keeping him in games til the end only for the opposition to finally break down defensively and Tebow got some lucky breaks. There is no denying that Tebow had some running skill but the read option was not a offense that every team was preparing for on a consistent basis. It was a nitch at the time somewhat ala the Wildcat offense when the Dolphins broke that out.

The year Tebow was drafted the Jaguars were picking 10th. Now the Jags have made some really fucking dumb picks in the past Matt Jones - RJ Soward - Reggie Williams to name a few, the Jags were trying to replace the void left at DT when Stroud and Henderson left the team and ended up drafting Tyson AluAlu. Most notably at the time David Garrard was definitely the Jags QB. Garrard had just finished 2 straight decent years at the QB spot. The last thing the Jags were going to do was spend the 10th pick on a project qb.

Once the jags bought the koolaid on Gabbert they were stuck with giving him the job and the chance to make something out of it. I dont care who your team is or what the situation is but a team that trades up in the top ten to draft there supposed franchise QB must give him the appropriate amount of time to sink or swim. What alot of the idiot fucks dont understand is that this is Gabberts 3rd year and he's 23 years old. If he'd stayed in school like Andre Luck did he would be in his 1-2 year. It's not as if he's in his 4th-5th year and the Jags haven't moved on. Show me a team that gave up on a top ten QB after 2 years??

Currently the New Jags GM David Caldwell is not going to sign a circus joke QB named tebow to appease the idiots solely because he's from the Jacksonville area. The GM is going to let the mistakes happen with the previous GM's picks and ride the shit train to draft his own Franchise QB. He's not going to waste time on a fucking gimmick. He's not going to draft a shitty qb in the fourth round to later cut him or draft a fucking punter in the 3rd round and pass up QB's like Kaepernick and Wilson and Dalton. Hes got it made. 2-3 years of drafting in the top 10 and things can turn around.

How do you feel about this year's draft? Do you think Caldwell is making the right moves so far?

That's a great question and too soon to tell. But I do like some of his picks. To name a few; 3rd rounder Dwayne Gratz is a big physical corner that fits right in play with Gus Bradley's type of secondary. Luke Joeckel even as bad as he looked yesterday I think that was just a rookie getting his ass whipped by a young athletic DE in his first NFL game. Usually big time tackles pan to be at least decent starters. Joeckel was a no brainer. Denard Robinson / Ace Sanders. Both of these guys have the game changing speed and unique skill sets that set a team apart. Ace Sanders is already starting due to Blackmon being suspended. Ace will shine once Blackmon and Cecil Shorts III are back on the field together. The other will have to wait and see.

The thing that has impressed me so far with David Caldwell has been more to do with his approach to gutting and rebuilding this team that lacks talent in all facets. He made all the right cuts. Got rid of the dead wait and replaced them with young athletic players that have started for other teams and signed them to 1-2 year conracts. These are players that have mid level talent that are looking to make a home and grab that second contract. In other words these are players that are hungry to make a name and be competitive. For example Roy Miller DT from Tampa and Geno Hayes LB from Chicago and Will Blackmon CB from Seattle etc.

The one thing that bothers me about him so far is the fact that he didn't really address the QB position. But as a fan that hasn't been able to feel good about the QB position in years it may just be that I'm beyond impatient. He brought in Matt Scott UFA from Arizona. He has some mobility and a strong NFL arm. But he's so young and raw but he made the practice squad. Other than that he pretty much stayed pat at the QB position. I was hoping we would have made a play for Alex Smith as a game manager. But then again that's my impatience talking. Hopefully the plan is to draft a franchise QB with the first pick and then draft another development QB in the later rounds. One things for sure, Gabbert will not be the QB next year.

there seems to be this myth that the 2011 denver broncos defense was rivaling the '85 bears or something. they were 24th in the NFL in scoring defense that season, and 20th in the NFL in total defense (yardage allowed). they only had 9 interceptions that year (tied for second least in the league) and their 10 fumbles forced was tied for 26th in the league. how that qualifies as "legit top defense" is absolutely beyond me.

i'm not suggesting they roll with Tebow as a long term solution, but seriously, why waste another year on Gabbert? if you are going to waste a year and dig for a franchise qb in next years draft, its better to waste a year with tebowmania than with freakin gabbert. same reason the raiders rolled with pryor instead of flynn

Ok fine, I didnt look at the numbers. All I can say is that the games that I paid attention to during that Tebowmania run, the defense was more than solid. A bulk of those wins that supposedly were because of Tebow as far as I remember were low scoring games. The defense was most definitely a factor. As for rolling with Tebow instead of Gabbert honestly I think that logic is asinine. Gabbert at least is our trash of a Qb. He knows our system and we drafted him. Let the kid at least finish being horrible and then move on. Gabbert has been preparing and practicing as the starter for three years. Tebow has been bouncing around and not playing jack squat. Seriously his glory days are over. Contrary to what most of the outsiders and national bias believes or as bad as they want it to be true, Jaguars fans do not want Tebow to be the QB. Only the idiot Gator homers want that. Those Gator fans don't put their money where there mouth is. There are a lot of them that talk a hot mess but don't go to the games and support the NFL in general. Those 60000 fans you see in the stadium to see a horrible team every week are not there to see Tebow. I just can't understand how some of you cant put two and two together. The fans that go to the games want a legitimate QB and team. Not the old ball coach spurrier and any of the umpteen horrible Florida QB's. There's is absolutely no purpose for getting Tebow in Jacksonville now. The team is selling tickets without the hype and as soon as the Jags finish 0-16 or 2-14 this year the Jag fans will be raving and frothing at the mouth to see their next franchise QB. Not some bum named Tebow.

I'm a terrible person to ask about that. I don't pay attention to college players until after the Super Bowl. I went to a 1-AA school that isn't allowed to even play in the FCS tournament. :lol

But in general, I'm not a fan of the "franchise quarterback first" mentality. I think teams should really go for BPA in most cases. The Jags passed on some good players by trading up for Gabbert, including quarterbacks who were taken later. So I don't know. If one of those quarterbacks is truly BPA, yeah, go for it. But if Clowney is a once-in-a-lifetime talent like everyone says he is, it's hard to pass that up. It's much easier to get a serviceable quarterback than people think it is, and it's much harder to get a superstar lineman.

Not to be rude, but I don't think you read my post. The Jaguars are not struggling to sell tickets. I know that the tarps give people the perception that the organization is struggling but its not the case. I know that there are pics of the stadium being empty in the 4th quarter of an embarrassing blow out loss but that doesn't mean that 60000 tickets were not sold to see two 2-14 teams. I mean if that's struggling then I cant wait for them to turn the corner. It's sad really because people like to clown on the fact that the stadium has tarps. When the team is good again the stadium will sell out and tarps will come off. The tarps were a necessity because of the economy crashing. Florida was hit hard, especially North Florida. People were not shelling out cash for football games when there $400000 homes value plummeted to $100000. The area has been in recovery mode since 06-07. The fact that the organization manages to sell 60000 tickets per game is amazing. 12 other teams in the NFL can't say that.

Believe me when I say Tebow doesnt matter. Besides, if the Jags are gonna suck they might as well tank fucking good dammit. Why waste time with this tebow and trying to win meaningless games when we can draft a real duel threat like this:

I hear you. But unfortunately my team has neglected the QB position for fucking ever. Let me give you a little perspective: These are the Jag QB's drafted in the last ten years: Byron Leftwich, David Garrard and Blaine fucking Gabbert. That is all. Let that sink in, it's true. So when you have a draft that possess several talented QB's in it. You pick one fast and another one for good measure. I wouldn't be mad if the Jags drafted 3 QB's in a row. QB's are too important. They can be the difference in a terrible team and a mediocre team and a good to great team. But if you don't pick one then forget it. That's the predicament the Jags have been in for years.

Over the same time, the Ravens drafted Kyle Boller Josh Harris, Derek Anderson, Troy Smith, Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor. No one on that list besides Flacco is better than Leftwich or Garrard. Only Boller and Flacco were higher than fifth-rounders. So I don't think there's too big of a difference there.

The Ravens had your mentality during the 2003 draft. Ozzie tried to trade up for Leftwich, but the Jaguars blocked the line. He ended up "settling" for Suggs. Then, he traded his second-rounder that year and his first next year to New England to move up for Boller. In doing so, he passed on Anquan Boldin (whom he said he would have drafted had he kept the pick) and Vince Wilfork (whom the Patriots took with the Ravens' pick). They could have taken Schaub with their second-rounder like people speculated they would have.

I agree that it's important to get a good quarterback. But that doesn't mean that drafting a quarterback needs to always be a top priority. Seven of the 12 teams in the playoffs last season did not have first-round quarterbacks (that they drafted) starting (although Joe Webb should not really count).

The Historic Suck Of The Jacksonville Jaguars (http://regressing.deadspin.com/the-historic-suck-of-the-jacksonville-jaguars-1463948531)

The Jaguars suck this year, everyone knows that. But what if we peel back that superficial layer of suck, and delve deeper into the fetid onion that is the 2013 Jacksonville Jaguars? It's actually astonishing how terrible this team is.
Just how pitiful are the Jags? First, a quick survey. Football Outsiders (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/dvoa-ratings/2013/week-10-dvoa-ratings) has kept a running list of the best and worst teams, according to DVOA, since 1989. The 2013 Jaguars are currently ranked as the third-worst team through 10 weeks since 1989, behind the 1993 Buccaneers—a 5-11 team that enjoyed two bye weeks and played 11 games against eventual playoff teams—and the 2005 49ers. Before Jacksonville's first win of the season against the Titans (http://deadsp.in/1eBrJ3i), it was dead last (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/dvoa-ratings/2013/week-9-dvoa-ratings)with an overall DVOA of -66.3%. After the win, the Jags "improved" to -62.3%. They are, empirically, nearly the worst in a quarter century.
(DVOA (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/info/methods#DVOA) is Defense-adjusted Value Over Average is used to compare parts or the entirety of a team to league average. So, 0.0% is average. Positive is good, negative is bad—unless we're calculating defense (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef), in which negative is good, and positive is bad. And all of this is adjusted for strength of opponents.)
Here's some modern context: Remember the 2008 winless Lions? Their season-ending team DVOA was -48.4% (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teameff2008). The Jaguars still have seven games to play, and DVOA isn't the end-all, be-all statistic, but that is simply astounding. It gets so much more astounding, though, when you down the pieces making up this catastrophe.
OffenseThis offense, as a unit, has been the kind of hot garbage you cross the street to avoid smelling.According to FO's drive stats (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/drivestatsoff2013), Jacksonville has scored touchdowns on 8.3% of its drives. It's gone three-and-out on a ridiculous 34.3% of its drives. They're just as horrendous in the red zone, too, where the Jags' touchdowns per red zone appearance percentage is a dismal 30.4%. It has taken the field with an average lead of -10.98 points. In all of these categories, Jacksonville ranks dead last in the league.
One more league-worst stat: Jacksonville has scored 0.92 points per drive. For context, as if being at the bottom of the league wasn't enough context, the Buccaneers, the second-worst in this category, have scored 1.34 points per drive. The Jags are getting lapped by the most dysfunctional NFL team in Florida.
In a pass-oriented league, bad offense starts with the quarterback. And oh sweet god, the Jaguars' quarterbacks. The opening day starter, Blaine Gabbert, is STILL (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb) the second lowest quarterback by DYAR despite playing in only four games. This would be like leading the majors in home runs in late July after playing in just 20 or so games. New starter Chad Henne and Gabbert have also managed to rank 30th in the NFL for interceptions per drive.
Henne and Gabbert have combined for four passing touchdowns. Yes. Four. It would be easy to poke fun at them in comparison to Peyton Manning, who's thrown at least four touchdowns in five games this season, but let's aim lower. Minnesota's Christian Ponder, who's been usurped by Josh Freeman and Matt Cassel at different points of the season, has five passing touchdowns in six games this season. No, wait. We can go lower. Jason Campbell, who's started two games for the Browns, has five passing touchdowns. There we go.
But at least the Jags have Maurice Jones-Drew, right? Well, about that. Jacksonville has rushed for just 585 yards in nine games, the second-lowest total in the league. Jones-Drew has rushed 143 times for 432 yards and three touchdowns. His game-high this season is 75 yards. Even apparent highlights, like the Jags being fourth best in rate of fumbles per drive, are dimmed when you remember that they're probably just too busy going three-and-out and throwing interceptions to remember to fumble. So is Jones-Drew washed up, or does he just have no offensive line? Tough to say, but adjusted for opponents, he's been worse than human tackling dummy Trent Richardson, and is ahead of only Ray Rice, Bernard Pierce, and Willis McGahee in DYAR (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/rb).
Injuries have been a big reason for the failures of the offense—sort of. During Week 5's game against the Rams, Gabbert hurt his hamstring, and left tackle Luke Joeckel suffered a season-ending fractured ankle. This came after the Jaguars traded former starting left tackle Eugene Monroe to the Ravens for a couple of late-round picks. Wide receiver Justin Blackmon—the glimmer of hope and 2012 team leader in receptions who was suspended for his first four games—lasted all of four games before being suspended for the rest of the season, though this opened the door for Cecil Shorts, the long decent skill player on the Jaguars' roster.
DefenseBefore Gus Bradley became Jacksonville's new head coach, he was the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, and a good one at that. So you might think that the Jaguars' defense would be the stronger side, right? At least next to that offense? Yes, actually!
There are a couple bright spots on the defensive side. The Jags cause fumbles often, with a fumbles per drive rate of .076, second-best in the league—while recovering fumbles is almost entirely random, forcing them can be a good sign. Another strength (in the context of being dead last in many, many categories) is that when opponents' offenses are in the red zone, they only score touchdowns 60.5% of the time, 22nd best in the league.
Any strengths of the defense, though, are nullified because of its starting situation. Jacksonville's D takes the field with an average lead of -8.63. Can you guess where that ranks in comparison to the rest of the league? (Yes, it's the worst.) The Jets' defense, a group that also suffers from a questionable, turnover-prone offense, starts out with an average lead of -3.17, second-worst in the league. So not only do the Jaguars, on average, not have a lead, they're also, on average, behind by more than a touchdown.
In fact, in a 60-minute game (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/pacestats2013), the Jaguars spend an average 5:10 tied, 8:59 leading, and 45:51 trailing. (I'm growing tired of writing this, but yes, those are all league-worsts.)
No offense to the Jags' four-man defensive line of Tyson Alualu, Sen'Derrick Marks, Roy Miller, and Jason Babin, but it is not good. Running backs earn 4.55 yards per run (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/dl) against it. If running backs break to the second level—getting to linebackers and the secondary—they earn 1.20 yards per attempt, 24th-worst in the NFL. Jacksonville also sucks at getting to the quarterback, racking up a league-lowest total of 12 sacks, and dead last in adjusted sack (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/dl) rate at 4.3%. Can't stop the run, can't stop the quarterback.
The defense hasn't suffered many crucial injuries—outside of safety Dwight Lowery going on injured reserve in Week 5 and eventually being cut—but it's rather demoralizing when your team's offense constantly turns the ball over and puts you back on the field.
Special TeamsHey, the Jaguars are not the worst at special teams! Jacksonville ranks in 16th with a 1.6% special teams DVOA (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamst). This is a team that prides itself on doing the "foot" part of football well, dammit.
Placekicker Josh Scobee has made all nine of his extra point attempts, and hit all 12 of his field goal attempts, with his longest measured at 53 yards. Punter Bryan Anger—a third-round draft pick—has punted 54 times for 2502 yards, the third-highest total out of all punters. He's got a top-10 net average of 40.9 yards. Exactly half of Jacksonville's offensive drives have ended in Anger punting the ball away, so he's getting plenty of work.
One argument in the Jaguars' favor is that they've faced many tough teams. The total DVOA of Jacksonville's opponents so far is 5.4%, the sixth-toughest. It's daunting to face playoff contenders like the Chiefs, Seahawks, Colts, Broncos and 49ers. But Jags are miserable even (especially) in opponent-adjusted stats. And again, this isn't about losing; it's about how the team loses. Points are left on the board. Offensive drives stall out with little effort on the defense's part. For those eight losses, the Jags have never come close to a victory.
Maybe it'll get better with less fierce opponents; Jacksonville's future schedule has a -9.0% DVOA, one of the fifth easiest. There might even be a few wins to be found in there. But so far, the 2013 Jaguars have shown that being a historically awful football team really is an extraordinary accomplishment.
