Personally (I have 20 years in the US too) it hasn't been the case, but I gather it has to do with the fact I'm not brown-skinned, nor have certain Peruvian/Bolivian/Mexican traits (short, squinty eyes, etc).
I do agree there's some sort of tribal latino pride (La Raza, etc), which I personally don't quite get. Seems to be more associated with Mexicans, Cubans, Costa Ricans, etc.
That's why I thought Manny's question was indeed interesting.

hispanic is not a racial term. It is a cultural term.
To an average american a plate of tacos is no different than a plate of choripan. Or a tango is no different than a quebradita. So it's fitting everyone south of the border (save the small colony nations(haiti, jamaica, etc) and brazil, are considered hispanic.
and this thread has nothing to do with race. it has to do with culture. Manu was given the contract because he is of same "culture" as mexicans of san antonio. that is why they embrace him like their raza. therefore RC and Pop gave him such a massive contract. them mexicans love em some Ginobili. as terrible as he is now.
manu will sell the tickets to feed Pop and RC's families. That's what this thread is all about Charlie Brown
Bullshit! We (Mexicans) love Manu because he's a great player that's helped this franchise to be so successful. He's a hall of famer and has been loyal to the Spurs. It's the same way we love Duncan. Even when it looked like he was losing it, we stood behind him because what he has done and means to this team.

I'm not here to change minds. God knows I been clamoring since February that giving Manu the pass would be our undoing. nothing changed and nothing will change.
yet, who's really been the delusional?
I thought that would be the case, you have absolutely no proof whatsoever that what you say is true.
Why should anyone believe what you say? Because you are "hater"? Because you have been in the USA for 20 years? Or because of your "supposed" interactions with thousands of average Americans?
Why should any of us believe any of that anymore than we believe your other preposterous claims?
You have no LINK to speak of, consequently your claims are based on fallacies, thus delusion on your part.
Besides many of us here have been around here a lot longer than you have and interacted with many more Americans than you have. By your very own argument they have much more credibility.

I respectfully disagree.
Manu was given his contract due to being hispanic and the large hispanic population in San Antonio. Holt gotta feed his kids.

wake up. Manu is infinitely more popular in San Antonio than Duncan. You might be in the minority of mexican fans that are as ardent devotees of Duncan as they are of Manu. But the MAJORITY are 10x more of a fan of Manu than of Duncan. That in itsellf is a travesty IMO
Duncan is not only underappreciated nationally, he is also underappreciated locally. Furthermore, if Duncan was of hispanic origin, they would have renamed the city of San Antonio to San Timoteo long ago.

I've always liked that word "nebulous". I've often used it to describe what used to be my profession of psychology, especially trying to describe it as a science. If it is, then it is a nebulous science at best!

Look folks, there is no doubting that Manu is immensely popular in San Antonio due to the fact that he speaks the language of many of it's inhabitants, but to say the only reason he got his contract because he shares that language and much of that culture is pure NONSENSE.
Too many people on this forum have forgotten that it is the Spurs way (under Peter Holt) to reward their key franchise players inflated final contracts. You do realize that Avery Johnson's final contract in 2000-2001 was 8 million?
Now I don't know about you, but Manu at 7.5 million vs. Avery at 8 million per year is all of the proof you need. I think it would be safe to say that Manu at this stage is more valuable than Avery was in '00-'01 no?
Look, if you want to piss and moan about the 7.5 per over the next two years, go ahead...sure, it would have been nice to see that number at 4.5-5, per to save some money for another acquisition, but to make it a race argument is just being ignorant of the way the Spurs FO does things.
If you think about it, these inflated final contract rewards are really brilliant in the grand scheme of things. Holt, Pop, and RC know there status as a small market, and likewise, so do players. Players in the organization, and across the league are well aware of the way the Spurs do things. To compete with larger markets, and not have their talent bolt to those large markets, these rewarded contracts offer incentive for player loyalty.
Have you ever wondered why so many Spurs franchise players stay in San Antonio? Go look at other small market teams for a compare and contrast. I am aware that wanting to play with a great like TD makes players want to stay too, but these reward contracts are another piece.

but to your point, even Pop said that Manu was very popular because he spoke the same language of many of the people. So even the guy that most of ST worships agrees with you. ultimately it was a business decision, because you can sell those HEB Fresh Made Tortillas (which I buy every week tbh) better with Manu than you could with Duncan. so if we need Manu to sell tickets and merchandise, it makes sense. If we need him to help Lebron cement his legacy, then I guess Holt makes money off that as well with revenue sharing.

It couldn't be because Manu's been a very exciting player all these years and like his personality and unselfishness he's shown all these years coming off the bench for every single SG we've had since he's been here. Sometimes I wish he left the first time when he had a chance since we could've won some championships according to some without him.

interesting point. It possibly would have been better for both parties(spurs and manu) had they parted ways around 2008. This strategy of standing pat and overloyalty to the stars hurt the Spurs a lot. But who knows, Manu could possibly been more famous and successful in a bigger market like NY, DC, etc.
I hope Spurs office is learning the lesson(the hard way) that this overloyalty and standing pat with the core has a 50-50 chance of being successful at best.

He got the contract because he's been a great Spur and because Pop loves the guy. So does the city. I have loved the big 3, but with Manu it's more tolerance than love over the last couple years and especially this last post season. I don't like the fact that the Spurs' success hinges on this guy and his helter skelter play and overplayed injury plagued body ... these factors have nullified almost all the good feelings I have had for him. I just hope he retires after next season, I have a feeling it's going to be really ugly. At this point it doesn't matter how much rest he has. He embarassed himself in the finals and he will never get over that. He has huge confidence issues as we all know. With his style of play and his oft injured body and his diminishing skills he should have fucking retired. Period. He's too fucking old. Spurs could have parted ways and it would have been all good.

Avery Johnson 8 million.
Manu could retire a Spur without overpaying him. 14.5 million is too much for him - especially after his atrocious Finals (which he down plays). He didn't even get a reasonable (market) contract, much less help out the Spurs as TP and TD did.

I was one of Manu's biggest fans and still love the guy for everything he's done for the team. But yes, he's made some comments that have made me wonder if he's in denial over just how inconsistent and bad he was in the playoffs. In some cases, the team won despite Manu and perhaps because the dude is a winner, all he saw was a "W" no matter how he played.
However, I can cite two occasions where he downplayed his poor performance. During the playoffs, a reporter asked him about his FT% going down and he deflected the question as if he had only missed a couple or that it was really no concern. He said something like "Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't. Trying to explain why I miss is just as difficult as explaining why they go in". -- Uh, no. The guy was always clutch and was one of the designated players who Pop wanted to get the ball to when the opponent needed to foul. I used his FT shooting as a barometer as to whether his head was in the game or not during the playoffs.
Sadly, his FT shooting problem was a good indicator that he wasn't right. Tim used to struggle with FT shooting and he improved tremendously. Even though Tim's always been a GREAT player, FT's were one of his weak areas and you knew it was a matter of mechanics. Good FT shooters don't go backwards.
In an interview, Manu described his personal performance in the playoffs as "so, so". That's flat out ridiculous and drew a deserving, sarcastic response from many in this forum. For an average player, I'd describe his performance as so-so. For a good player, I'd describe it as disappointing. For a great player with his history, I'd describe it as a nightmare or atrocious. Either fits.
He's had a great career and can be proud of it but everyone eventually needs to change their game or hang it up and realize that age has caught up with them. I sincerely hope there was something holding him back physically and that he can come back to being close to a great player. If it was physical, he's not letting on and perhaps convinced himself he was fine.
For the majority of the playoffs, he was clumsy and careless. His dribbling was poor as was his FT shooting. His shot selection was horrendous and many times he was gassed before he could reach the rim on drives to the basket. Outside of the occasional dunks when he made it to the rim, he lacked the lift to get his shots over the opponents. The results were reckless shots that bounced high off the backboard or barely touched the bottom of the basket. Meanwhile, Manu could be seen sprawling on the floor and looking for a call.

He has himself up so high on a pedestal that if the team wins, he will take credit for the win and feel like a contributor to the "W" even though our eyes and the stats prove the contrary. If all this is true, then this is bad because Manu doesn't realize that he will need to improve his shooting and adjust his game. Maybe father time has defeated him. If that was the case Manu would've done a James Harden a long time ago when he had a chance and left the Spurs when he had a chance to be a starter somewhere else instead of being a career sixth man coming off the bench for every other SG we've had since he arrived.

Stupid take. Manu finally started to believe his own press. After years of true modesty his golden god of war image finally got through and now he believes it. Never mind the fact that...
In the 2013 Finals Manu Ginobili sucked more than a Bangkok whore.

One-man run for the Blazers. What a fuqn loser.
He usually throws the game at the end, not the third. He is confused.
